 SEIU-ULTCW’s Elinor Glenn Scholarship Fund We have named our Scholarship Fund to honor Elinor Glenn, who  was a trailblazer for worker rights and women’s rights and we are proud to honor her efforts in SEIU. As the first woman to be hired as an organizer by SEIU, she was a pioneer in or ganizing the public sector well before they had collective bargaining rights. She built her own union, SEIU L ocal 434 in Los Angeles, from 70 0 to 7,000 members and led the first strike of county workers to protect wages and seniority rights. That union led to the incubation and nurturing of SEIU Local 4 34 B, which was led by Ophelia McFadden. Prior to that, Glenn hired McFadden as a staff representative in 1968 and encouraged her leadership. To this day, her role in helping to elevate the modern homecare workers movement remains among Glenn’s proudest moments. 434B later became 6434 and now, ULTCW. Her son, N orm Gleichman, currently serves as an attorney for the SEIU Legal Department in Washington, DC.  Eligibility:  One year of continuous membership and one year on COPE, as of September 1, 2 012 Children, step children, or children as a guardian, and grandchildren of members meeting the above mentioned criteria of membership, or the member themselves. Applicants must be attending an accredited college, university, an accredited community college, or technical school as of the fall semester of 2012. The Applicants may also be in an accredited graduate Program as of the fall semester of 2012. Any one individual may onl y receive this scholarship once. Scholarships will be awarded without regard to the sex, race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, age, or disability of any applicant. Scholarship awards are limited to one per household. SEIU-ULCW ELINOR GLENN SCHOLARSHIP 

A maximum of 50 points should be allocated to the applicant. The three categories are:

1. Extracurricular activities, volunteer or paid work Maximum of 10 pts.

Should demonstrate commitment to social and economic justice.

2. Personal Statement Maximum of 30 pts.

The applicant’s statement should clearly describe: 

  what the labor movement has meant to him/her;

  their social justice, labor or political activism;

  their goals for working toward social change within an organization;

  their plans for continuing their activism in his/her career after graduation; and

  include correct grammar, punctuation and spelling.

3. Academic record Maximum of 10 pts.

Should demonstrate ability to be successful in an academic environment by having had at least a 3.0

Grade point average in High School, in Technical School, College, or University.

Applications may be submitted between February 1 and April 30 of each year, with awards being

announced on July 1 of each year. Applications sent on line must be received on April 30, and those

applications sent by mail, must be postmarked no later than April 30.
