threatening.
• Onset: sudden
• Assessment: Kussmaul respiration, fruity breath, nausea,
and abdominal pain. Dehydration and electrolyte loss.
• Laboratory findings:
o Serum glucose: greater than 300 mg/dL
o Serum pH: less than 7.35
o Serum HCO3: less that 15 mEq/L
o Urine ketones: positive
