Class of 2018

The Broadway musical Carousel concludes with a graduation scene whereby Billy Bigelow who is now with the Lord gets an opportunity to witness his 12 year old daughter’s commencement exercises. The speaker, Dr. Selden, begins his address with these words, “It is custom at these graduations to pick out some old duck like me to preach at the kids. Well, I can’t preach at you. I know you all too well. I brought most of you into the world, rubbed liniment on your backs, and poured castor oil down your throats. I only hope that now I got you this far that you’ll turn out to be worth all the trouble I took with you. I can’t tell you any sure way to happi-ness. I only know that you’ve got to go out and find it for yourselves. You can’t lean on the success of your parents. That’s their suc-cess…Makes no difference what they did or didn’t do. You just stand on your own two feet. The world belongs to you as much as to the next fella, so don’t give it up. And try not to be scared of people not liking you, just you try liking them. And just keep your faith and your courage, and you’ll turn out all right. It’s like what we used to sing every morning when I was a boy. Maybe you still sing it: When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high.”

Two days ago, June 8, St. Patrick School held its annual graduation, which is one of the happiest days in the life of a young

person. The Class of 2018 at St. Patrick School was small in number but big in stature. It was a lovable group of young boys and girls who bonded in an endearing way to touch the hearts of all who know them. The class exhibited a marvelous example for fellow students. There were smiles on the faces of the graduates as well as awards given to each of them. It was a class who held their heads up high throughout some of the storms they faced in their years at St. Patrick School in recognition that a goal was achieved as well as the awareness that they didn’t run away when the going got tough. This made me extremely proud of these students, their families, our faculty, and school administration. The years at St. Patrick School built a strong foundation for the future of these stu-dents to pilot them into an assortment of high schools to challenge their growth and development as well as their academic and so-cial skills.

In addition to students from St. Patrick School many others from the community in a variety of learning institutions and

grade levels have graduated or are awaiting graduation exercises. The church presents a message to graduates to serve Christ through newfound skills and knowledge. Setting goals and priorities teaches a graduate that life is a constant adjustment that pre-sents some complex decisions. Moving on to a new place of education or career navigates a graduate to learn unfamiliar ways of speaking, acting, listening, thinking, and even praying. The formulation of a healthy attitude about oneself presses forth sensitivity, friendliness and care for others, which leads to sound relationships that demonstrates happiness in the achievements of others. In his graduation address at Duke University on May 13, 2018, Tom Cook CEO of Apple stated, “If you step up without fear of failure, if you talk and listen to each other without fear of rejection, if you act with decency and kindness even when no one is looking even if it seems small or inconsequential, trust me, the rest will fall into place.”

Choices made by graduates will shape much of their future which include relationships with consequences beyond imagina-

tion. Personal satisfaction comes to a graduate in recognizing one’s blessings aware that it is easy to sit back knowing that a prize called a diploma has been won; however, each graduate is a unique person called to pitch in to make the world a better place for all. The question should never be, “Am I better off today than I was yesterday, but, am I making the world a better place for all to live.” In a recent Wall Street Journal cartoon titled Pepper…And Salt, a young women is giving a graduation address. The caption reads, “Your challenge is to change the world before it changes you.” Events, technology, relationships change all of us, yet, a graduate must generate personal change without fear of making decisions that may be regretted later in life. To the Class of 2018, use the strength God provides which comes through prayer to determine the way you are going to spend your life. It make take time, but it is surely worth the effort. Develop your potential, and nurture you relationship with God every day. My congratulations to all graduates. I am proud of you.

. In Christ’s love,

Fr. Bob

A warm St. Patrick welcome to those new to our parish especial-

ly Carlos, Silvia, Tobias, and Anasofia Farelo. We look forward

to getting to know you!

Annual Corpus Christi Food Drive

THANK YOU !

Once again we have surpassed all expectations as the donations came pouring in last weekend to support the annual Corpus Christi Food Drive. We were able to send to Paterson 280 boxes of cereal (yes, we counted!) and 251 bottles of shampoo - in every shape, size, and color! People all over the

diocese will benefit from these gifts as they are dispersed during the summer months. But the generosi-ty didn’t stop there!! Along with all that cereal and shampoo we deliv-ered to Paterson 74 overflowing bags of groceries. Thank you for taking part and for your enormous generosity. Would you like to be more involved with our efforts to feed the poor? Contact the Parish Office for more information.

Do you have shoes that are still usable but no longer fit your

needs? If so, please consider donating them. I am currently run-

ning a shoe collection for charity called Soles4Souls, who distrib-

ute the shoes to people in impoverished areas in the world like

Madagascar, Haiti, and Honduras. In these countries, walking is

often the main mode of transportation, and not having shoes

means children cannot make it to school and adults can’t get to

work. Shoes are a critical component in helping people break the

cycle of poverty. All types of shoes are welcome: men’s, wom-

en’s, children’s and athletic shoes. Shoes can be dropped off in

the collection bin located in front of the priests’ garage, or may be

left on my front porch at 30 Chandler Road in Chatham between

now and June 24. Thank you very much in advance for helping to

keep shoes out of landfills and on the feet of those in need.

The Knights of Columbus will be serving a hot meal to the needy

at Eva’s Kitchen on Sunday, June 17th. If you would like to help

make chili there are pans and recipes at the front of the church

this weekend.

English Food Pantry and Our Lady of Victories. This is approximately a 3-hour commit-ment. Let us put you on the schedule or on our sub list. Many hands make light work! Call me to learn more! Second Collection for Seminarians-Next Weekend

As we celebrate the role of fathers next week, we ask our pa-

rishioners to acknowledge our priests-our spiritual “fathers,” and

especially those men who are preparing for the priesthood in

our Diocese. Please join in contributing to a special second

“Father’s Day” collection to be taken next Sunday, June 17,

2018, in support of the education of our seminarians. Your gift

to this collection, along with a portion of the Bishop’s Annual

Appeal, will help defray the costs of educating our seminarians

who will one day faithfully serve our parishes and our families.

Thank you for your support!

SAINT PATRICK SCHOOL

As this school year comes to a close, our 8th graders were able to celebrate their accomplishments during their graduation ceremony last week. The next leg of their journey will bring them to Regis High School, Oak Knoll School, St. Elizabeth Academy, Seton Hall Prep, Chatham High School, New Providence High School and Whippany Park High School. They bring with them a sense of confidence and a strong academic and faith foundation that makes them well prepared for what is ahead. They exempli-fy what it means to be a student of St. Patrick School.

Youth Ministry

Thank You!

As we close out another year in Youth Ministry, I would like to

thank everyone who helped in making this another wonderful

year for all! Thank you to the many retreat leaders who helped

to mentor our underclassmen in their faith journeys toward Con-

firmation and the teens and adults who volunteered throughout

the year to make chili, serve at Eva’s, restock the food pantry

and help make our fundraisers a success. With 130 sophomores

confirmed this year, we have a great group ready to step up and

take the place of the many seniors who will be heading off to

college. I look forward to all of you staying connected and active

and, after a restful summer for all, we will once again move to

another terrific year of Youth Ministry in 2018-2019.

A Special Thank You!

A very special thank you to Elise Ruggiero and her mom, Eileen

and to Grace Nugent and her mom, Carrie. These two families

took over the Monthly Food Pantry Restock for the entire year

which was a huge commitment and a tremendous help. Your

dedication to this outreach was greatly appreciated!

Congratulations to Samantha Druhot, recipient of the 2018

SPYM/JTB College Scholarship

Sam has been extremely active in SPYM and the parish since

her freshman year in high school. She has been our most dedi-

cated Eucharistic Minister - never missing a weekend (even

when she is scheduled for 7:30 am Mass) and has recently even

been given the task of training our new Youth Ministry EM’s.

Nobody has EVER been given that responsibility (even ME!).

She has been a retreat leader and co-director over the past 2

years and has spent many, many hours volunteering for our

various service and outreach projects. She is one of the first to

respond whenever help is needed - whatever the task may be.

Sam is also one of our SPYM representatives for the CHS Bac-

calaureate this year. Sam definitely lives a Christ-like message

each and every day and

is a terrific role model of

faith. We have been

extremely proud to have

Sam representing SPYM

as it has been a pleas-

ure having her so in-

volved and active.
