• This presentation explains the different Elements of Design:

Lines• Lines are used in artwork to

outline or add detail.• There are many types of lines;

Horizontal Curved

Vertical ZigzagDiagonal Straight

Dotted

Color• Artists add color and value to an artwork

to show feeling or emotion.• Primary colors are blue, yellow and red.• Secondary colors are orange, purple and

green.• Cool colors are blue, green and purple.• Warm colors are red, orange and yellow.

Value• Value is the lightness or darkness of

a color.• If you add white to a color you get a

lighter color and it is called a tint.• If you add black to a color you get a

darker color and it is called a shade.

Texture• Artists can create texture in their

artwork to show how things feel.• Some words that are used to

describe texture or how something feels are; rough, smooth, bumpy or furry.

Shape• Artists use shapes in artwork that

are two dimensional.• Some basic shapes are triangles,

squares, circles, rectangles and ovals.

• Artists also use shapes such as stars and hearts.

Form• Artists create form in three

dimensional artwork.• Five basic forms are; sphere,

cone, pyramid, cylinder and free-form.

Space• Artists create space in artworks

that are two dimensional.• Positive space is the filled in

object.• Negative space is the empty space

around the object.
