Elements• made of one kind of atom• CANNOT be broken down
into simpler substances• are pure substances• can be found on the
Periodic Table
Meet the Elements!
Compounds• made of two or more atoms
that are chemically bonded– Examples: water, salt,
carbon dioxide• A compound has different
properties from the elements it is made up of
Compounds are different than the Elements they are made up of!
•Compounds can only be broken down into simpler substances by chemical changes
•Compounds are pure substances

PureSubstances Mixtures
CompoundsElementsHetero-geneous
Homo-geneous
Mixtures• made of two or more substances
that keep their own properties– Examples: air, ocean water,
blood• can be separated by physical
means (filtration, sifting, evaporation, etc.)
The difference between Compounds
and Mixtures Cartoon
•Heterogeneous mixture - is NOT uniform throughout– each substance can be
visibly distinguished (ex: salad)
•Homogeneous mixture – IS uniform throughout –the substances are evenly
mixed and cannot be visibly distinguished (ex: kool aid)
–Also called a solution
