    Dear Parents and Guardians,

Reading during the summer is an activity that benefits all students. This year, the district would like to

encourage students to read over the summer months by recognizing their achievements when they return

to school. Participating students will be honored by their principal at the beginning of the school year. Inorder to document the students reading, the district is providing a summer reading journal where students

will record information for each book read. The content of the journal differs depending on the grade level

    of the student.

Participation in this summer reading program is encouraged, but optional. Guidelines for participation are

    as follows:

    1. All students should use the journal provided.2. In their journal, students entering grade 1 or 2 should list the title and author of the book and

provide a connection to the text.

    3. Students entering grade 3 or 4 should list the title and author of the book and provide a briefsummary of the text in the journal provided. Please note that students entering grades 3 and 4

should be recording chapter books only in this journal.

    4. Students entering grade 5 should list the title and author of the book and provide both a briefsummary and connection to the text in the journal provided. Please note that students entering

grade 5 should be recording chapter books only in this journal.

    5. Parents/Guardians must sign each journal page to indicate that students completed the work. Please feel free to attach additional sheets to this if more space is needed. Students should bring their

completed journals with them on the first day of school. Students will be recognized as follows:
