Grade 5: Students explain how the main character, Nathan, from the historical fiction text, “Storm
Warriors” overcomes the challenges he’s presented with in the text.
One challenge Nathan faces is when he needed to cure the injured soldier. In the text it states,
"My hands felt clammy and shaky, but once again the words from my books came back to steady
me….” This shows how Nathan used linked oil to cure the sailor because of the information he
remembered from his medical books. Another challenge Nathan faces is when he risks his life
for others. For example, it says “I watched with a sick feeling in my stomach as the realization
crept over me.” He thinks this when he looks out into the sea thinking about having to go in and
save the lives of those on the ship.
Zahra Haleem
The final challenge Nathan faces is when he has to help a bleeding and hypothermic sailor.
Nathan overcomes this challenge by taking charge. In the text, it says “Treat the bleeding first
then the hypothermia.” This shows that Natan uses his background knowledge in medicine in
order to help the bleeding sailor. Although Nathan didn’t have the courage to be a surfman, he
certainly proved himself in healing those in need. He overcame his challenges by using his skills
to save those that needed it the most.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST OF TWO SCIENTIFIC TEXTS
The two articles, "Hurricanes, Earth's Mightiest Storms," and "Recovering from Katrina" seem
similar but they are not. They both give important information about hurricanes. However, the
two articles focus on different ideas.
In the text, "Hurricanes, Earth's Mightiest Storms" focuses on how a hurricane forms, and
instruments of what forecasters use to predict weather. Some examples of the weather
instruments are barometer, hygrometer, anemometer, and satellite images. For example the text
describes that the hurricanes develop the same way, feeding on warm moist air. This text also
explains what the eye of the hurricane is. For example the text describes that, "As a high wind
develop, air pressure falls rapidly at the center. This low-pressure area is called the eye, and it
may be 10-20 miles across."
The text, "Recovering from Katrina" however, focuses on how people/organizations help the
people in New Orleans recover from Hurricane Katrina. For example, Red Cross and Federal
Emergency Management Agency helped rebuild damaged homes. They also relocated people's
homes that were destroyed.
In both texts, they have some similar and different text features that are used for similar and
different purposes. For example, "Hurricanes, Earth's Mightiest Storms" has satellite images,
photographs, sidebars, diagrams, pictures, and maps. In this text, satellite images, and
photographs are used to show what a hurricane looks like, and forecasters discuss information
they have about hurricanes in the ground station. They use diagrams, pictures, and side bars to
show how to form a hurricane, and uses red arrows showing warm moist air coming in the
hurricane. In contrast, "Hurricane Katrina uses photographs for showing the differences of what
New Orleans first looked like, before the hurricane, and how it looked like after the hurricane. In
addition, it shows photographs of people/organizations helping rebuild New Orleans and their
homes again.
Both texts are similar because they have some of the same things. For example, both articles are
about hurricanes. For example, "Hurricanes, Earth's Mightiest Storms describes how hurricanes
form, start and weather instruments. In, "Recovering from Katrina" it tells how
people/organizations help build New Orleans from a hurricane. Furthermore, both articles are
informational texts that provide helpful facts on hurricanes.
This is why I think both articles are similar and different in many ways. I can now understand
that it takes a lot of work to help fix and find out where hurricanes arrive and finish.

Writing Informative Paragraphs Using text evidence from Research
Martin Luther King was a good leader because he freed African Americans
from slavery. For example, he didn’t like the way white people treated African
Americans like slaves. In the article it says, “He was recruited to serve as
spokesman for the Montgomery Bus Boycott which was a campaign.” He is a
strong leader because he stood up to the white people. He is strong because he was
not afraid of the White people.
Abdul Rahman Eideh
Dr. King was a good leader for starting civil rights. He is a good leader
because he fought for people’s jobs and freedom. I know this because in the text it
states, “Later in 1963 Dr. King was one of the forces behind the March for jobs
and freedom.” This concludes why Dr. King was a good leader of civil rights.
Huzhaifah Jamshaid
Martin Luther King Jr. was a good leader because he stopped segregation.
In the text it states, “In 1955, he was recruited to serve as a spokesman for the
African- American population of Montgomery.” Segregation means when black
people and white people are separated. Martin Luther King tried to stop this. He
was brave, strong, and stood up for people.

Grade 2: Response to Book of the Month: The Name Jar
To me the name, Atika, means, “caring for others” because my friend, Atika, cares about me. If I
am sad, she comes to me and asks me what is wrong. If she has something I really want, she lets
me borrow it. She does not tattle tale. Therefore, the name, Atika, is very special.
Maryam Aamir
I think the name, Meral, means kind and generous because my friend, Meral, always lets me play
with her. For example, once, I did not have anyone to play with, so she let me play Super Mario
Brothers. Another thing, Meral, does is she teaches me how to draw. Once, I wanted to know
how to draw a person, so she showed me. This is why I think she is a nice friend and classmate.

“The honey is sweet and so is knowledge, but knowledge is like the bee who
made the honey; it has to be chased through the pages of the book.”
The message Trisha learns from her Grandpa words is no matter how hard it might be, it is worth learning to read because unless you read through the pages of a book, you will not gain “Sweet Knowledge.”
Trisha ran to the living room and found the book Grandpa drizzled the honey on. She cried, I
think, because after learning how to read, she finally understood what her grandpa meant because
now she just has to read for knowledge.

Grade 2: Personal Narrative
It was my sixth birthday. I asked my Mom, “Can I have a new bike?” She said I had to earn it. I
went to my room angry but then decided to do some chores. My mom told me to sweep, vacuum
and clean the bathroom. I worked hard, but my mom said I still had to do some more work. So,
the next day, I went to my dad’s workshop and helped him with some tires. Later, my mom told
me my dad got me the new bike. I was super happy because my bike was shiny and golden. And,
it was even better because I worked for it.
