Early French Immersionat École Braemar Elementary, École Cleveland Elementary, École Dorothy Lynas Elementary, École Larson Elementary, École Ross Road Elementary, and École Sherwood Park Elementary

French Immersion is a second language program available to students in the North Vancouver School District. It is designed for non-French speaking students who wish to attain a high level of proficiency in both official languages. Students are immersed in the French language within the classroom where French is used for meaningful communication and for instruction in all subject areas.

The goal of our French Immersion Program is to produce well-educated, functionally bilingual students. Students in the program achieve a level of learning in all subject areas equivalent to that achieved by students in the English program. French Immersion students develop strong communication skills in both French and English. They also develop a knowledge and understanding about the structure of language that may enable them to learn other languages more easily.

Subject to space availability and the requirements of our enrolment and registration process, Early French Immersion students begin the program in Kindergarten (or in some cases grade one) and continue on through to Grade 12. All instruction is in French for the first three years (Kindergarten to Grade 2). Formal instruction in English begins in Grade 3 and represents 20% of instructional time through Grade 7. The percentage of French instruction decreases gradually as students proceed through the secondary grades.

In Grade 8, Late French Immersion students join their Early French Immersion peers for continuation of the French Immersion program at the secondary level through to Grade 12.

Grade 4/6 Outdoor School Programat Cheakamus Centre

The Outdoor School Program provides students and teachers the opportunity to explore and discover a wide range of natural connections in the district’s very own 165 ha (420 acre) residential learning centre and ecological reserve. Located in Brackendale, this diverse outdoor classroom promotes an integrated learning approach where traditional disciplines come alive through hands-on learning experiences.

In addition to the benefits of place-based learning, through cabin-living and participating in daily chores, students learn skills and strategies to create and maintain healthy relationships, and make positive contributions to their community and environment. Programs are designed and delivered collaboratively with visiting teachers and qualified on-site staff including volunteer high school counsellors, assuring that educational standards and core curriculum links are integrated into program design.

For 2017-18, students in grade 6 will be attending the Outdoor School Program in the Fall/Winter while students in grade 4 will be attending in the Spring.

Grade 3 Skw’une-was Cultural Programat Cheakamus Centre

Newly designed for Grade 3 students, this unique place-based indigenous education program is built on the core teachings of sharing, respect and seasonality. Students engage in authentic learning through cooking over open fires, listening to local legends, and living the traditional daily experiences of the Bighouse such as cedar bark weaving, wood working and food gathering.

Since 1986, the Skw’une-was program has been sharing the practices of Coast Salish people through an overnight living experience. Students, teachers, parent volunteers, and cultural program staff work together to engage in daily life in and around our Bighouse, providing a unique opportunity to learn more about the rich culture of the Squamish people.

Gr. 3 students and parent volunteers will attend the Skw’une-was Program in the Spring season.

StrongStartat North Vancouver StrongStart Centres

StrongStart BC is a free, drop-in, play-based early learning program for preschool-aged children accompanied by a parent or caregiver.  There are seven StrongStart Centres in the North Vancouver School District welcoming our youngest learners.  The Centres are located in the following schools: Boundary Elementary, Eastview Elementary, Lynnmour Elementary, Montroyal Elementary, Norgate Elementary, Seymour Heights Elementary, and Westview Elementary.

To help children get ready for success in kindergarten, qualified early childhood educators lead and demonstrate learning activities, story time, music and art.

Parents and caregivers will learn how they can help support their children’s learning, language development, skills, knowledge, and attitudes for success in school.

The StrongStart Facilitators prepare snacks for children at the Centres to ensure compliance with food safety standards. StrongStart is a “nut-aware” program.

Registration intake for StrongStart is on-going; parents/caregivers can register a child during their first visit to a StrongStart Centre.
