Elementary Retreat 2017!

ST. MARY MAGDALEN PARISH 1253 52ND ST SE, KENTWOOD, MICHIGAN

My dear friends in Christ,

At one point or another all of our lives have been touched by the ministries and services supported through the Catholic Services Appeal (SCA). You may have experienced these touchpoints in the pastoral care and leadership of your parish priest, whose education was funded through the Appeal; in the Catholic school education received by you or your children; by participating in parish faith formation programs; or through diocesan ministries that address the needs of our culturally diverse Catholic community, support family life and formation, and care for those who are societally excluded.

We are able to provide these programs and services to thousands of people throughout West Michigan because of your generous donations to the CSA. In these times of turmoil, violence, and secularization, your gifts are making a positive difference. Working together as a community of believers, we can provide works of evangelization, education, and charity So Faith May Flourish.

I am grateful for your generosity each year to the CSA. Please join me in continuing to support the CSA by pledging your financial support today. Please pray and reflect upon the many lives it positively impacts and how you can best offer your financial support.

Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend David J. Walkowiak Bishop of Grand Rapids

P.S. Thanks to all of you who have made a pledge/contribution to our 2017 CSA. If you have not done so, please consider making your donation to this cause soon. May the good Lord repay you abundantly for your kindness.

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults and Children:

The process of initiation begins with the question, "Am I called to this Faith?". It is the process in which men, women and even children are guided and cared for as they awaken in faith and are gradually introduced to the life of the Roman Catholic Church. The goal of the process is to provide an intellectual and spiritual framework for conversion. Our faith community welcomes the participants, supports them on their journey and cares for them through prayer and fellowship as they journey towards full initiation. If you are interested in learning more about the RCIA, please contact Molly Wisdom @ 455-9310 ext. 103. Classes for elementary age children and adults begin on Wednesday, September 13th at 6:15 pm. Following our opening prayer in church, the classes are held in rooms 14 & 15 respectively. High School participants will meet on Sunday mornings; please contact the office for details.

When we surrender every area of our lives, including finances, to God, then we are free to trust Him to meet our needs. – Larry Burkett

Our Women’s Expo was a couple of weeks ago and I would like to thank the following parishioners for helping to make it a success by having a craft/expo table: Megan Barnum, An Burri, Ruth Bush, Karen Hanson, Jim Jakosh, Dollie Konwinski, Dennis LaFave, Lauri Emelander, Roselida Odhiambo, Maria Orr, Marianne Reber, Diane Zbikowski. We will have a meeting in January to start planning for our 2018 festival. Please consider being a part of the planning committee and help make the next festival a success.

Our Faith Formation year will be starting in mid-September. We are looking for regular and substitute catechists for several grade levels. Please contact Ruth in the office if you would like to share your faith with our children. There will be a catechist training Monday, August 14 at 7:00 p.m.

Save the date of August 20 to become a life saver. MIBlood will be here for our summer blood drive. Blood is needed every 2 seconds and there is usually a high need for donors during the summer months. Take a few minutes to help someone to have a tomorrow.

+++

Attention bowlers! It is time to begin thinking about the fall and bowling season. The St. Mary Magdalen mixed bowling league is in need of bowlers. This league bowls every other Sunday at 3:00 pm at Spectrum Lanes and is open to adults of all ages and skill levels. Please contact Alex Cruz at 616-604-1046 if you are interested in joining this fun league.

As the summer comes to a close and you start looking at that grill that has seeing many steaks and burgers or that patio set that has seen better days remember the Men’s Group Fall scrap metal drive. This drive will be held on Saturday, October 7 at 9:00 – 1:00.

+++

We would like to keep those who are serving in the military in our prayers. This includes all branches of the military, police, fire fighters, and 1st responders. If you or a family member is in the military, please contact the office and give us their name and address. It is our hope to send them cards and well wishes during the holiday season and throughout the year.

Elijah recognized the voice of God not in the strong and

heavy wind, not in the earthquake, and not in the fire, but

in a tiny whispering sound. May we find enough quiet in

our clamorous world to hear His voice and discern what He

is calling us to do and be.

NOTE Fr. Peter’s books will be available August 19 & 20 and August 26 & 27. Book signing to take place after all Masses. Payment is due upon receiving the books. If you are unable to pick up your order on these two weekends, books will be available for pick up in the Parish Office.

MUSIC MINISTRY

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary: A holy Day of Obligation. Vigil Mass on August 14th at 5:00 p.m. Holy Day—Tuesday, August 15th— Masses are at 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Dear Parishioners of St. Mary Magdalen, It is with a heavy heart that I leave the parish of St. Mary Magdalen. However, I have found a new position as a Music Director in Allen Park which is closer to both my family and Catherine's. We have made our new home in Wyandotte and look forward to this new chapter within our lives!

Over the course of the past year I have learned many things especially what it means to be a leader and director of music. Even when I struggled, choirs, cantors and staff were there to lend me a guiding hand. I will surely miss them all and thank them for their effort that they put into the Music Ministry here at St. Mary Magdalen.

It has truly been a privilege to get to know you all. I will miss the parish, the sunny beaches of Lake Michigan, the beautiful city of Grand Rapids and of course all of you. Whenever our small family gets a chance to visit the “Best Side” we will definitely make sure to come in with Amelia and say hello.

I wish you all the best! Thank you all and may God bless you and keep you, and may God bless the Parish of St. Mary Magdalen!

Yours Truly, Luke Simpson
