Graduating in May 2013 with Masters in Elementary Education with a Concentration in ESL.

South Omaha
1,200 students Pre-K through Sixth.
450 of these students are classified as current English Language Learners.

Moved to Omaha from Tamaulipas Mexico in Summer of 2012.
Lives with Aunt and Uncle in Omaha
Home Language is Spanish, but other members of family speak English
Very little English usage by student
Reluctant to try with possibility of failure

Alex’s classroom has 15 out of 26 students as current ESL students.
His classroom teacher holds her ESL endorsement and has a great deal of experience working with ESL students.

+Lesson 1 Reading and Critical Thinking
Lesson Objectives
Student will read and comprehend sight words and high frequency words.
Student will be able to write sentences connecting his prior knowledge about ponds to the new English vocabulary words he has learned.
Student will be able to orally communicate sentences using the stem “There are ______ in the ___________.”
+Critical Thinking and Reading Procedure
Introduce sight words that will be used. Translate into Spanish to build comprehension.
Discuss the topic: Are there ponds in Mexico? Have you been to a pond before in
Mexico? Have you been to a pond in Omaha? What kind of things do we find in
ponds? What animals?”
Read story and refer to sight words to build comprehension.
Write a few sentences expanding on the new sight words. The goal will be to connect the sight words to his own life, and if possible with the topic of Pond Life.

Write on dry erase board: There are ________ in the ________________. Try a sentence with a singular using: There is _________ in the _________. Note the differences with plural vs singular.
Discuss How he will be able to use these sentence stems in his classroom today. Who will he target to talk to in English? Maybe an English-only classmate?
+Lesson 2 Collaboration and Writing Objectives
Students will read an informational text and summarize important points near their reading level.
Students will identify unknown words and use strategies to understand their meaning in English.
Procedure
Discuss any prior knowledge of jets. Where do you find these? What are they used for? What do you already know
about these?
Take turns reading sentences on the handout aloud.
Highlight words that are unknown for meaning. Write a list down on a separate piece of paper.

Using iPad, dictionary, or picture dictionary, find the meaning of these words collaboratively. Discuss correct meaning of word.
Draw a picture or write meaning in Spanish on paper where words were recorded.
Reread text with new understanding of unknown words.
List 3 new things learned about jets. Use sentence starter: I learned that _________________.
Take turns reading what they learned. Discuss together for understanding.
Discuss what plane is your favorite, and what you would like to fly someday. Which would be most fun to ride in or fly? Why?

+Lesson 3 Creativity and Digital Literacy
Lesson Objectives:
Students will be able to listen and watch a video about transportation, and make meaning from the digital media.
Students will be able to use different online tools to record their learned information about modes of transportation.
+Procedures
Engage: Watch video on Brain Pop Jr. about Transportation to introduce different modes of transportation.
Choose favorite mode of transportation from video- Discuss.

Type three facts about mode of transportation in word processer.
Use iPad to look up more information on the internet about his favorite mode, bicycles.
Use Voki.com to create a talking Avatar to report information about transportation.

Create a new video (under teacher’s premade account).
Make title page
Choose pictures and video from Animoto library.
Make slides sharing 3 facts about the mode of transportation.
Use creativity to add music and different effects found in the Animoto library.
Once complete, produce video and share with classmate.
Share Animoto video and Voki character recording with classroom teacher to showcase how the use of digital literacy is useful in the classroom for ESL students.
