    Elements of Film

A film or also known as movie or motion picture, is composed of a series of

still pictures when shown in a screen, creates an illusion of movement. t ori!inated

around the mid"#$th centur%, inventions such as the  phenakistoscope  and &oetrope

    demonstrated that a carefull% desi!ned se'uence of drawin!s, showin! phases of the

chan!in! appearance of o()ects in motion, would appear to show the o()ects actuall%

movin! if the% were displa%ed one after the other at a sufficientl% rapid rate. *he earliest

films were simpl% one static shot that showed an event or action with no editin! or other

cinematic techni'ues. Around the turn of the 2+th centur%, films started strin!in! several

scenes  to!ether to tell a stor%. *he scenes were later (roken up into multiple shots

     photo!raphed from different distances and an!les. A film is created (% Photo!raphin!

actual scenes (% a camera or (% animation where in an artist uses computer animation or

    - to create ima!es that move or a movie ma% create a film. Some of the elements of

film are ima!e, time, motion, sound, li!htin!, se'uence and composition.

ma!e is an element of film, which is a depiction of a visual perception. n

theaters powerful lamps are used to pro)ect the ima!e throu!h a focusin! lens. n

television a vacuum tu(e pro)ects lines of electrons upon a phosphor coated screen.

Althou!h the ima!e is a recordin! of captured li!ht the aesthetics of what we are viewin!

is still determined (% the use of the (asic elements and principles of static, fine art.

/lements and principles of art are needed to (e identified in this element to (e a(le to

determine the 'ualit% and continuit% of the film created.

*hen time. *ime is a period of duration, time or occurrence, in relation to an

event. *here are two t%pes of time. *he first is the actual len!th or duration of the film.

*he other t%pe of time is called die!etic time, or time that is the result of the stor%. *ime

is needed to determine the runnin! time of the film created if it is )ust ri!ht or dra!!in!.

Ne0t is motion. Motion is what creates an illusion of movement. *he ph%sical

propert% of the e%e and (rain called the 1 persistence of vision1 is the one that creates the

perception of movement in a motion picture. *he element of motion is the motion that we

    see while watchin! a film.

After that is sound. Sound is not essential to a motion picture however sound is so

common in film that it is included as an essential element. Sound is what we hear in a

motion picture. t helps in the depiction of what is happenin! in a stor%. n earl% films,

there were no sounds (ecause there was no technolo!ies %et those times that record

sound. ut in present times sound is one of the essential elements to create a !ood film.

Ne0t is li!htin!. Li!htin! or can (e also called as illumination is the deli(erate use

of li!ht  to achieve a practical or aesthetic effect. Li!htin! includes the use of (oth

artificial  li!ht sources like lamps and li!ht fi0tures, as well as natural illumination (%

    capturin! da%li!ht.

*hen se'uence. *he se'uence is the one that tells the stor% (% means of visual

lan!ua!e of the film or the film s%nta0. *o (e a(le to create a perfect se'uence there must

(e continuit% and unit% (etween all of the scenes of the stor%.

Lastl% is composition. -omposition is the use of the visual elements and

principles to create a frame that is aestheticall% interestin!, attention holdin!, and

consistent with overall continuit%. -omposition is the placement of the shapes within the

frame that enhance the film realit%. t involves placements of actors the scene of the film

and more to create a realistic and interestin! scene.

So the elements of film are ima!e, time, motion, sound, li!htin!, se'uence and

composition. /ach of them have a specific role to create a !ood film which will attract its

viewers and will show them what the director intent to depict in his movie.
