Content Area: Social Studies Grade Level: 8th grade Topic: Gilded Age Content Area Standard: 2- Time, Continuity, and Change Literacy Anchor: 4- Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies. Essential Question: How can pulling out important words or phrases from a text help students gain a better understanding and interest in the topic to be discussed? Instructional Methodology: Strategy: Key Words and Phrases Category: Determining Importance Description: Students will pull key words and phrases from the text and write them down in the

“Key Words and Phrases” column. They will explain their selection in the “Why It’s Important to Me” column using context clues from the text and prior knowledge on the subject. Finally, students will be given an opportunity to write the teacher-given explanation in the “Explanation” column as the lesson progresses. This strategy will help students identify important concepts in a text through the use of context clues as well as activating their prior knowledge.

Step- by- Step Procedures: 1. Have the students read the lyrics while the song is played. 2. Ask students to underline any words or phrases in the lyrics that they find important. 3. Have students write why they think that word or phrase is important. 4. Ask students to fill in the second column of the worksheet by explaining why they think it is

important using their context clues and prior knowledge. 4. Debrief each line that has a key concept underlined in it. 5. Have students write the teacher given explanation on why the concept was important as they progress through the lesson. 6. I am using the strategy as a way to introduce students to and motivate students to learn about the Gilded Age.

Formative Assessment: Check that all students are able to identify at least five key concepts that the song lyrics cover. Make sure students are able to provide an explanation as to why they think the word or phrase is important. Materials Used: Hip-Hop U.S. History: The New and Innovative Approach to Learning American History by Harrison and Rappaport , music along with printout of lyrics, worksheet

Comment [G1]: 1. Content Pedagogy The application of the reading strategy is aligned to a literature standard. The content itself is aligned to a social studies standard. By aligning the reading to the standard, I am able to make the activity educational and meaningful to the students.

Comment [G2]: 2. Student Development I am giving the students to pull out the words they believe to be important and explain their reasoning using their prior knowledge on the subject. It is important to have a general understanding of students prior knowledge in order to build onto it so that students may grow intellectually.

Comment [G3]: 3. Diverse Learners The use of a song with lyric handout appeals to both auditory and visual learners.

Comment [G4]: 8. Assessment An informal formative assessment is used to ensure that students understand the content and how to use the strategy. I want to ensure that students know how to use the strategy so that I can implement it in the classroom again with other readings.

Comment [G5]: 5. Motivation and Management and 6. Communication and Technology I used a hip hop song to access content in an attempt to make the content more interesting and relatable to the students. I hope that students will be motivated by this unique way to cover content.
