TECHNOLOGY TO WATCH: EYE CONTROLED COMPUTERS
Tobii Technology (http://www.tobii.com/) has introduced eye tracking
technology used in current computer products. Eye controlled
computer interaction features hands free movement, and could be
the next stage of computer interaction that allows computer users to
reduce hand fatigue. Advantages of eye input for computers include
the following:
Improve speed and efficiency
Complement or replace keyboard, mouse, and voice input.
Place your hand on the mouse, and the mouse can be positioned where you look.
Look at an object, and issue commands with the keyboard or voice input.
Look to the side of the screen to obtain a widget of available shortcuts
As you read, the screen scrolls automatically down.
Zooming in on what you are looking at can be performed with the mouse or keyboard.
Calendar events can be gradually highlighted until your eyes look at them.
Reduce repetitive stress on the body, as in carpel tunnel wrist injuries.
Sterile environments, as hospitals, labs, and other locations benefit from sanitary surfaces.
_________
FROZEN SMOKE HAS POTENTIAL TO BOOST BATTERY LIFE, AMONG OTHER USES
Frozen Smoke, also known as aerogel, is a substance so small that thousands can fit on a single hair, but
can store large amounts of energy. This could lead to vast improvements in storing power, as with
increasing capacities of laptop batteries and storage for renewable resources, as solar cells. Other uses
include improvements for robotic surgery, detecting toxins in food and water.
Wikipedia has more information on the man‐made substance at the following location:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerogel
_________
NANOSCALE CONTACTS COULD PROLONG BATTERY LIFE UP TO 100 TIMES
University of Illinois researchers indicate they have created a way of using nanotubes that are 10,000
times smaller than a human hair to extend battery life up to 100 times. Feng Xiong of the research team
was quoted in the journal Science saying “The energy consumption is essentially scaled with the volume
of the memory bit. By using nanoscale contacts, we are able to achieve much smaller power
consumption.” Instead of charges on some devices lasting hours, they could last months. This is
beneficial for laptops, satellites, cell phones, and other devices. More information is available at
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/03/110310141433.htm

FUN FACTS: COMPUTER BEATS AT JEOPARDY
In February, the computer Watson (designed by IBM) beat top Jeopardy competitors, and joined Deep
Blue (another IBM computer) in beating top human opponents. Top chess champion, Garry Kasparov
was beaten by Deep Blue in a game of chess in 1997. Watson was designed with artificial intelligence to
analyze the Jeopardy answer given by the host, and devise the question most likely associated with the
answer compared to the data given to it. It answered some questions incorrectly, but gave more
accurate answers than its opponents. The computer received questions via texts. Watson had the
information base of dictionaries, encyclopedias, and 200 million pages of content as sources to finally
win Jeopardy. An agreement with IBM has been reached to use Watson’s technology in health care.
