More than 1000 Musicians to Perform at 285 Concerts, in 17 Venues Rochester NY – March 30, 2010 – The Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival (www.rochesterjazz.com) presented by M&T Bank today announced its largest lineup ever with more than 1000 artists performing at 285 concerts and a record number of international artists. Jeff Beck, Gladys Knight, Herbie Hancock, Keb’ Mo’, Bernie Williams and John Pizzarelli will headline the nine-‐day event that runs from Friday June 11 through Saturday June 19. After a fast sell-‐out of the first Jeff Beck performance on June 18, festival producers added a second show that evening. The Festival’s ninth edition includes more than 60 free shows. It takes place in 17 different venues and outdoor stages all within walking distance in Rochester’s East End Cultural District. Gibbs Street will become “Jazz Street” and will be closed to traffic for all nine days. The Festival, already known for delivering one of the most extensive international lineups of any jazz festival in the United States, will add even more concerts this year from artists outside the United States. In addition to two well-‐established popular international series, Nordic Jazz Now and Made in the UK, three bands from Denmark will be presented in association with Copenhagen Jazz Festival Experience.

Also new this year, are two new Club Pass Series and venues: the Roots and Americana Series, which will be held at Abilene Bar, and the Viva Italia Series, which will be held at the Rochester Club Ballroom. “These new series and the breadth of international talent will whet the appetites of our loyal Club Pass connoisseurs and more than satisfy the musical palates of all in attendance,” said Marc Iacona, Festival Producer and Executive Director. “We’re proud to feature the hottest up and coming artists from around the globe.” “We’re also very pleased to welcome two new sponsors this year, Verizon Wireless, sponsor of the Verizon Wireless Club Pass Big Tent and Rochester General Health System, presenting sponsor of the East Avenue and Alexander and East Avenue and Chestnut Street free stages. “The canvas is wet, the ‘painting’ is ready and all the pieces of the puzzle have come together,” said John Nugent, Festival Producer and Artistic Director. “We have a great headliner series, and what has become our calling card, an amazing presentation of international artists and strong emerging artists.” “What is magical about having so many different styles of music,” added Nugent, “is that it creates a sense of euphoria for the audience. When you hear so much great music night after night, it becomes intoxicating. It gets into your soul, it uplifts you and that’s a big part of why our festival is serendipity. The movement of people, sharing their feelings about what they have heard, it’s uplifting, and that’s something everyone needs.” Headliner Shows All shows are at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, 60 Gibbs St. Tickets are $55 -‐ $125 plus services charges.

Billy’s Band will be back by huge popular request, as will Cat Russell, Mose Allison, Lynne Arriale, Djabe, Robin McKelle and many other favorites. Just a few of the many new international artists not to miss are Joyce, one of the best Brazilian singers ever; Dmitry Baevsky from Russia “a ridiculous bebopper,” according to Nugent, Grace Kelly, an 18-‐year-‐old Nugent heard in Italy last year who plays like Charlie Parker; Viktoria Tolstoy from Stockholm, who will dazzle the audience; and Stan Tracy, “the Godfather of British Jazz” and a virtuoso who hasn’t been to the states in 50 years, who will play here in the Made in the UK Series. A number of New Orleans artists dot the roster this year. Sauce Boss, will cook a huge pot of gumbo during his show and share with the crowd afterward, and Bryan Lee, a guitarist who is blind, will perform on the last night in the Verizon Wireless Big Tent.

XEROX ROCHESTER INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL 2010 Made in the UK Artists STAN TRACEY TRIO
Affectionately know in the UK as the ‘Godfather of British Jazz’, Stan Tracey has been a stimulating artistic voice for each successive generation of musicians he has worked with. A self-taught musician, he turned professional at sixteen, and swiftly became involved in the fifties London jazz scene. His position as pianist and arranger for Ted Heath was followed by a six-year stint as house pianist at Ronnie Scott’s, where he worked with such jazz giants as Ben Webster, Roland Kirk, Wes Montgomery, Stan Getz, Zoot Sims and Sonny Rollins. During this period he recorded his 1965 album ‘Under Milk Wood’ which is regularly cited as the most influential album in British jazz. As a prolific composer – over twenty commissions as well as music for forty of his own albums – Stan has led many innovative ensembles, working with key musicians such as Bobby Wellins, Tony Coe, Peter King, Don Weller, John Surman, Mike Osborne, Art Themen, Kenny Wheeler, Clark Tracey and Gerard Presencer. Following
the widespread critical acclaim for the suite Continental Drift composed jointly by Stan and Clark, and their orchestra’s successful tour in 2002, Stan was inspired to get back to concentrate on his piano-playing after great performances by the Trio on that tour. The Trio features Clark Tracey on drums and Andrew Cleyndert on double bass. Stan has won countless awards and in 2008 was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen’s New Years Honours List. ‘Does any anyone here know how good he is?’ Sonny Rollins www.stantracey.com DENNIS ROLLINS’ VELOCITY TRIO
Acclaimed musician, composer, educator and funkster extrordinaire Dennis is well-known on the British and international jazz scene and is celebrated for his virtuosity, versatility and unique approach to the underrated trombone. He has established a reputation as an artist of excellence who is comfortable performing in many styles. This has resulted in his working with some of the world's top jazz and pop personalities such as Jamiroquai, Courtney Pine, and Blur, Maceo Parker to name a few. Dennis has recorded three critically acclaimed albums to date (Badbone, Make Your Move, Big Night Out) promoting his funk band, Badbone & Co. An Ambassador' of the National Foundation for Youth Music's 'endangered species' programme to boost youth interest in instruments such as the trombone, French Horn, the double bass, tuba and oboe, Dennis is also on the Board of Advisors of the British Trombone Society. In addition to his work in performance Dennis is a gifted educator who is renowned
for his unique and highly effective approach to music education. Dennis Rollins’ latest project, the Velocity Trio is a jazz band that incorporates a progressive, contemporary edge to its sound. Incorporating an element of Dennis' trademark electronic stage craft and a big serving of funk, the Trio features the unusual line-up of trombone, Hammond organ and drums. ‘the most exciting British trombonist for decades’ Jazzwise Magazine www.dennisrollins.com
GWYNETH HERBERT QUARTET
Hailed as ‘Brilliantly original’ by Mojo, Gwyneth Herbert is at the vanguard or a new generation of young jazz and folk influenced singer-songwriters. Gwyneth first broke onto the scene five years ago, when she was signed up by the Universal conglomerate as a jazz crossover artist. Finding that role too stifling, she soon struck out on her own, as a singer-songwriter, inspired as much by Janis Ian and Joni Mitchell, as by Billie Holiday or Nina Simone. In 2007 her Seb Rochford (Acoustic Ladyland/Polar Bear) produced album was picked up by Blue Note.
‘Not a jazz singer in the strictest sense of the word, Herbert has more in common with the singer-songwriters of the Joni Mitchell era. But she possesses a flawless sense of swing, a jazz improviser’s ear for detail and her superb new trio generate backdrops that are as seductive as anything you will hear from luminaries such as Cassandra Wilson. The arrangements were never less than first class while her voice is a thing of beauty’ The Sunday Times www.gwynethherbert.com JOHN TAYLOR
John Taylor was born in 1942 and first came to the attention of the jazz audience in 1969 when he partnered saxophonists Alan Skidmore and John Surman. In the early 1970s he was accompanist to the singer Cleo Laine and started to compose for his own sextet. John also worked with many visiting artists at Ronnie Scott’s club and later became a member of Ronnie’s quintet. In 1977 John formed the trio Azimuth, with Norma Winstone and Kenny Wheeler. The group was described by Richard Williams as “…one of the most imaginatively conceived and delicately balanced contemporary chamber-jazz groups’. The trio made several recordings for ECM
Records and performed in Europe, the USA and Canada. The 1980s saw John working with groups led by Jan Garbarek, Enrico Rava, Gil Evans, Lee Konitz and Charlie Mariano as well as performing in duo contexts with Tony Coe and Steve Arguelles. Composing projects included a commission for the English choir Cantamus with Lee Konitz and Steve Arguelles and pieces for the Hannover Radio Orchestra with Stan Sulzmann. In 2000 John made a new collaboration with Azimuth and the Smith Quartet for the Weimer Festival. Also in that year he recorded 'Verso' with Maria Pia De Vito and Ralph Towner. His trio recording with Marc Johnson and Joey Baron was released early in 2003 and September 2003 saw the release of his solo CD 'Insight' on Sketch. In 2004 John recorded 'Where do we go from Here?' in duo with Kenny Wheeler and 'Nightfall' with bassist Charlie Haden. They subsequently performed at the Montreal Jazz Festival. Also that year John formed a new trio with Palle Danielsson and Martin France. They performed at the Vancouver Festival and recorded 'Angel of the Presence' for CAM Jazz. This recording was released in January 2006 to coincide with their UK tour and has received critical acclaim. John has been professor of Jazz Piano at the Cologne College of Music since 1993 and became a Lecturer in jazz at York University in 2005. ‘…Taylor played as if the piano were his orchestra, always intriguing and filled with sumptuous chords, groove-alerting cross-rhythms and nimble lines. His playing is strikingly original and immediate, as if the piano has revealed all kinds of secrets to him that are kept from most other musicians…’ Ottawa Citizen www.johntaylorjazz.com GET THE BLESSING
Award-winning, Bristol based Get The Blessing (formerly The Blessing) are made up of bassist Jim Barr, drummer Clive Deamer, trumpeter Pete Judge and saxophonist Jake McMurchie. Jim Barr and Clive Deamer of ‘90s trip-hop superstars Portishead formed Get The Blessing in 2000 to share a fascination with improvised music, a pathological distrust of chords and a passion for north-african cuisine. Get The Blessing’s catchy, rocking tunes and arrangements create a genre-bending blend of sounds that is all their own. Get The Blessing stormed onto the UK and European scene with their debut studio album ‘All Is Yes’. Their work was recognised at the
BBC Jazz Awards 2008 with the prestigious Album of the Year Award. ‘... this outfit will surely recharge the jazz world.’ ***** -BBC Music Magazine www.myspace.com/thisistheblessing
RYAN QUIGLEY SEXTET
Ryan Quigley released his debut album “Laphroaig-ian Slip” on June the 29th 2008 at Glasgow International Jazz Festival’s Homegrown Showcase. Ryan has been involved in many projects involving musicians from around the world including Allan Bergman, The Bad Plus, Tim Garland, Curtis Stigers, Bob Geldof, Sharleen Spiteri, Eddie Reader, Justin Currie and Isobel Campbell. He has also toured the world with bands such as Salsa Celtica, The Unusual Suspects, The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, The RTE Concert Orchestra and The Irish National Symphony Orchestra. In 2008, Ryan’s Sextet were selected as one of the Jazz Services Promoters’ Choice bands and also picked up the Parliamentary Jazz Award for best band.
‘The abundant energy and drive reflects the focused concentration the players brought to the trumpeter’s attractive, cleverly arranged compositions ... his inventive, hard-hitting trumpet work is typically crisp and expressive’ Kenny Mathieson, The List www.myspace.com/ryanquigleytrumpet BRASS JAW
The critically acclaimed saxophone quartet Brass Jaw, already well known for challenging the boundaries of “chamber jazz” have now extended them still further. The addition of the ace trumpeter Ryan Quigley has created a new ensemble that is truly unique in sound and direction. Brass Jaw bristles with the excitement of a completely original set including the odd quirky arrangement of well loved jazz standards, all written and arranged by this stellar line up of Scottish jazz musicians. Following their hugely successful national tour of the United Kingdom in 2005, which also saw them perform live on BBC Radio Scotland, Brass Jaw have seen a rapid rise in popularity, culminating in the release of their début album “BURN”. 2006 saw them perform at the Clusone Jazz Festival (Italy), Glasgow International Jazz Festival, Islay Jazz Festival and a second appearance at the award winning Wakefield Jazz Club. In 2007 Brass Jaw completed their second
national UK tour – sponsored as before by Jazz Services, and in November 2009, they were a featured band at the London Jazz Festival performing seven concerts in the space of four days. ‘Meticulously rehearsed yet free-spirited, this was brass with class’ Evening Standard www.brassjaw.co.uk TOMMY SMITH / BRIAN KELLOCK
Saxophonist Tommy Smith is one of Scotland's leading jazz musicians and composers, an internationally recognised soloist and bandleader since the late-1980s and the musical director and driving force behind the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra and his own Youth Jazz Orchestra. His CV, since touring and recording the Whiz Kids (ECM Records) album with vibraphonist Gary Burton at the age of eighteen, includes a total of twenty-three albums under his own name for Hep Records, GFM, Blue Note Records, Linn Records and his own Spartacus label. Smith has worked in jazz groups and big bands, and has recorded and toured with world-renowned jazz musicians including Joe Lovano, David Liebman, Benny Golson, Joe Locke, Gary Burton, Chick Corea, Tommy Flanagan, John Scofield, John Patitucci, Miroslav Vitous, Arild Andersen, Trilok
Gurtu, Jack DeJohnette, Jon Christensen and Kenny Wheeler. This rare duo concert will pair Smith with virtuoso pianist Brian Kellock, a long time member of James Morrison’s band and a favourite musical partner of Sheila Jordan. Kellock has established himself as one of the top piano players in the UK jazz scene, working with such luminaries as Red Rodney, Sheila Jordan, Art Farmer, Charlie Rouse, Bill Watrous, Scott Hamilton, Stanley Turrentine, Herb Geller and many others. “Smith [is] a master of mood and lyricism. Exquisite on all counts.” BBC Music Magazine www.tommy-smith.co.uk
ROYAL WELSH COLLEGE OF MUSIC & DRAMA
This year’s ‘Made in Wales’ presentation follows the successful appearance of Paula Gardiner, Head of Jazz at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, in the 2009 Made in the UK series at XRIJF. For the 2010 festival, Paula has selected two of the finest bands in the current Welsh jazz scene drawing on the hugely talented pool of the college’s current students and recent graduates. Little Fish is a new contemporary jazz quartet set up in April 2009 and already the recipients of the Welsh Jazz Awards ‘best new band’. Playing original compostions written by Chris Hyson (double bass), they have built a following in Wales and will soon be embarking on their first full tour of the UK. The group are influenced by artists like, Kenny Wheeler, Dave Holland, Marc Copland, Bobo Stenson, Paul Bley and Charlie Haden. Conceived from an experimental recording session, the Evan Clegg 'Explorations' project is a collaboration from
Cardiff's new generation of jazz talent. Drawing influence from Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, and Paul Motian, the group, led by trumpeter Evan Clegg, aims to abstract from both the standards repertoire and original material using minimalism and free improvised approaches. ‘You guys are good man, really good! It’s astounding.’ Quincy Jones www.myspace.com/iittlefish www.myspace.com/evancleggjazz MADE IN THE UK at the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival 2010 Friday 11th June Stan Tracey Trio (Made in England) Saturday 12th June Brass Jaw (Made in Scotland) Sunday 13th June Tommy Smith / Brian Kellock (Made in Scotland) Monday 14th June Ryan Quigley Sextet (Made in Scotland) Tuesday 15th June Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama (Made in Wales) Wednesday 16th June John Taylor Solo (Made in England) Thursday 17th June Get The Blessing (Made in England) Friday18th June Gwyneth Herbert Quartet (Made in England) Saturday 19th June Dennis Rollins Velocity Trio (Made in England)

Palle Mikkelborg // Marilyn Mazur // Helen Davies // Mikkel Nordsoe -‐ presented in cooperation with Copenhagen Jazz Festival Experience.
New Danish all-‐star band at Rochester International Jazz Festival.
Danish music legends Palle Mikkelborg and Marilyn Mazur have formed an international all-‐star band with harpist Helen Davies and guitarist Mikkel Nordsoe. The four musicians will start their common musical journey at Rochester International Jazz Festival, Thursday 17 June 2010.
It is no coincidence that these four Danish musicians are going to represent the Copenhagen Jazz Festival in
the international marketing project Copenhagen Jazz Festival Experience. Each of them represents some of the best and ultimate in Danish music to day. None of them are jazz musician in the traditional sense, despite their use of freedom and improvisation -‐ but together they invite the listener into a spiritual and
beautiful world of soundscapes.
Palle Mikkelborg: "My personal sound and my ideas for concerts are naturally inspired by my deep interest in spiritual matters. I have never had a musical ambition in my life, only a spiritual one. My life-‐long journey in music and it's magic has only ever had one aim: to find peace in mind".
In 2009, Trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg celebrated his first 50 years in music. 25 years ago, Palle Mikkelborg
and Miles Davis proved to be a great inspiration for each other, the outcome of which was Aura – a work that long since has been canonized and awarded with a Grammy.
Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2009 had a special focus on Palle Mikkelborg and parts of Aura could be heard live for the first time in more than 25 years. As a composer Mikkelborg interest in the suite form has
triggered a series of works with jazz and symphonic orchestra characterized crew and unorthodox use of jazz soloists, strings and woodwinds.
Mikkelborg has toured in Europe and Japan time and again -‐ and has recorded with Gil Evans Big Band, George Russell Big Band, Terje Rypdal, Jan Garbarek, Gary Peacock, Dinu Saluzzi and many others. In other
words, Mikkelborg is one of Denmark’s most values musicians – and a national treasure.
Marilyn Mazur is best known today as the flamboyant percussionist at the heart of the Jan Garbarek Group, speeding around an ever burgeoning array of multi-‐ethnic metal, wood and clay instruments. Garbarek: "Marilyn is like the wind. An elemental force." The Danish percussionist spent 14 years on the
road with the Jan Garbarek Group, appearing on albums including “I Took Up The Runes”, “Twelve Moons”, “Visible Worlds” and “Rites”. Prior employers Gil Evans, Wayne Shorter, and Miles Davis have similarly valued her pervasive, penetrating percussion. Mazur also happens to be a very strong band leader and
composer, which can be heard on the ECM-‐album "Small Labyrinths" which features her old band “Future
Song”.
In this new lineup will Mazurs amazing abilities as the listening drummer can be freely unfold. She cannot ask for better co-‐players and musical challengers.
The quartet is completed with harpist Helen Davies and guitarist Mikkel Nordsoe – both longtime and highly respected musicians and strong contributors to the Danish music scene.
Helen Davies’ main work is in the field of folk and i improvised music , blending acoustic and electronic sounds. Together with Palle Mikkelborg, she has appeared together throughout Scandinavia, Australia, the Far East and China. She has also worked and recorded with several of Ireland´s leading traditional
musicians, most recently with singer Padraigín ní Uallachaín in programmes that reflect the spirituality of much of the Irish song tradition.
Guitarist Mikkel Nordsoe has been a massive force in the Danish rock and fusion scene since the early 1970s, and his excellent musicianship and pleasant mind has made him one of the most wanted guitarists
on the scene. Nordsoe has a unique ability to move easily between genres, and his own projects always reflects this in the best way possible.

For Immediate Release
Xerox to Present First Annual Jazz Talent Competition
Proceeds from “Jazz Star” talent competition will benefit youth programs
ROCHESTER, N.Y., March 30, 2010 – Building on the growing momentum of Rochester’s world-‐renowned jazz festival, Xerox Corporation (NYSE: XRX) will present an “American Idol” style music competition leading up to the 2010 Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival. Dubbed “Jazz Star: The Search for a New Sensation,” the talent show will raise money for a local youth program and – perhaps – catapult an unknown musician or group into jazz stardom.
“Jazz music is a language inspired by passion,” said Ed Gala, vice president, Global Experiential Marketing, Xerox Corporation. “Couple that with the commitment from our community to inspire great musicians and Xerox believes the Jazz Star search could add some real emotion to an already stellar event.”
Jazz groups and solo artists can compete in the online talent showcase by paying a small fee and uploading a short video clip at www.RochesterJazzStar.com. The first round of online public votes will narrow the field to the top 10 semi-‐finalists. The second round will determine the five semi-‐finalists who will perform live at the Xerox Square Auditorium on Wed., June 9 – two nights before the festival officially kicks off. Finally, a panel of distinguished, independent judges will choose Rochester’s first “Jazz Star,” and the winner will receive $2,000 cash, recording time in a professional studio, and a CD with custom-‐designed cover that will be made available on Amazon.com and iTunes for a year.
Proceeds from the effort will benefit the City of Rochester Bureau of Recreation’s Biz Kid$ Real, a program that teaches fundamental business development skills to children, including planning and research, production, sales and marketing, customer service and financial planning. A collaboration between the Rochester Public Market, the Credit Education Bureau and the Farmers Market Federation of New York, the Biz Kid$ Real program works with a team of youth to create and package a healthy snack made out of New York State produce. The group then sells the snack at the New York State Fair.
“Xerox never hesitates to go above and beyond,” said Marc Iacona, executive director and producer, Rochester International Jazz Festival, LLC. “In addition to using its printing and personalization technologies to uniquely interact with our audience online and at the festival, Xerox will now power a pre-‐festival event that allows us to give back while celebrating jazz.”
