REQUIRED ATTENDANCE Poster presenters are required to be at their posters during all breaks in the scientific program and are also required to attend the “Meet the Authors” poster reception on Saturday evening, January 25th, starting at 5:00 pm to discuss posters with attendees.

Additionally, your poster must be electronically submitted to Genigraphics by 1:00 pm Central time on Wednesday, January 15, 2020. MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION AND SUBMISSION Manuscript submission to The Laryngoscope or Laryngoscope Investigative Otolaryngology for poster presentations is optional, but encouraged. The Society retains the right of first refusal to publish any paper presented at a Triological

Society Meeting, therefore, if you plan to submit a manuscript, you must submit it to The Laryngoscope or the Open Access journal, Laryngoscope Investigative Otolaryngology.

Submitting authors have agreed at the time of abstract submission that the material has not been submitted for publication, published or presented previously at another national or international meeting and is not under consideration for presentation at another national or international meeting. The penalty for simultaneous submission/publication is prohibition from presenting at a Triological or COSM meeting for a period of three years.

Instructions for Authors and the link for online submission are available at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/lscope OR http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/laryninvesotohns

Should you decide to have your poster produced via a source other than Genigraphics the following instructions must be followed:

DIMENSIONS Poster size cannot exceed 44” x 44”. No exceptions. Title, authors and affiliations should be clearly visible and located at the top. A copy of the abstract should be incorporated into the poster or a copy of the abstract may be made

available. Print should be easily visible from a distance of at least 3 - 4 feet. Titles should be at least 1.5” high and general text should be 1/4 - 1/2 inches. To maximize the effectiveness of the poster, keep the presentation simple and clear, even if the topic is

complex. Your poster should be self-explanatory so you are free to discuss particular points raised in inquiry.

It is easier for viewers to scan a poster by moving along it systematically rather than zig-zagging back and forth in front of it.

Do not mount materials on heavy board or they will not stay in place on the display boards. Pieces of construction paper and Word documents will not be accepted for presentation.

NEW THIS YEAR FOR POSTER PRESENTATIONS VISUAL ABSTRACT COMPETITION

CASH PRIZES FOR 1ST ● 2ND ● 3RD PLACE If you are presenting a poster this year, prizes are awarded for the general poster competition. In addition to our standard poster competition, we are introducing a visual abstract competition this year for poster presenters who wish to include a visual abstract in their posters. The following information is everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask about visual abstracts. WHAT IS A “VISUAL ABSTRACT”? ● A visual summary of the information an abstract or manuscript typically conveys. ● Similar to “Infographics” that have been used in marketing for many years ● Does not replace an article. Quickly and visually highlights the salient findings and helps viewers determine if they

want to learn more.

WHY USE THEM? ● When used in social media, they result in: ○ 7X increase in impressions ○ 8X more retweets ○ 3X increase in article visits on publisher website ● Decrease cognitive load, ease of information acquisition ○ Encourages understandable, plain language explanation of concepts increased clarity ● Can be used in presentations, grant proposals, etc. for visual interest and quick transmission of information

HOW DO YOU CREATE THEM? Several software options exist. These include PowerPoint, Adobe Illustrator, etc. In general, you want to make sure the most important information from the abstract is conveyed visually in the

Visual Abstract. Primers and templates exist – this is a screen shot from the primer available at

https://www.surgeryredesign.com/resources Please use this as your in-depth resource.

in addition to it and submit your poster with the visual abstract. ○ Examples of poster templates are available on the Genigraphics site ● In order to qualify for the competition, you must forward your Visual Abstract in PDF format to both Michael

Johns and Jennifer Villwock at [email protected] and [email protected] ● Posters will be judged on design, creativity and content by members of the Triological Society Social Media and

Culture committee. ● Monetary prizes for first, second and third place will be awarded ● Winners will be announced during the poster reception on Saturday evening
