Battery

• A portable power source that has a positive and negative. Electronics works on Direct Current (DC) where electrons flow from negative to positive. Other symbols will be used for Positive and Negative

Page 3: Electronic Components

Resistors

• used to control the amount of electricity flowing through a circuit

Page 4: Electronic Components

Potentiometer

• variable resistor, as you turn the knob, the resistance changes from 0 ohms (no resistance) to it’s maximum value (lots of resistance)

• Like a dimmer switch in a dining room

Page 5: Electronic Components

Photocell

• a special kind of resistor that reacts to light. The more light that hits it, the less resistance it has.

Switches• devices that are used to turn ON and OFF

the flow of electricity to a circuit.

Page 7: Electronic Components

Diode

• a diode is a device that allows current to flow through it in ONE direction only. There are two Leads. The anode and cathode.

Page 8: Electronic Components

LED(Light Emitting Diode)

• Gives off light when electricity flows through it. Has a positive and negative side.

Page 9: Electronic Components

Capacitor

• a device used to store energy much like a battery. Can be charged and discharged over and over.

• There are different types

Page 10: Electronic Components

Disc Capacitors

• stores small amounts of energy

Page 11: Electronic Components

Electrolytic Capacitor

• Stores large amounts of electricity. Has a positive and negative like a battery

Page 12: Electronic Components

SCR

• allows current to flow through it ONLY after a positive voltage is applied to the gate. The cathode must connect towards the negative side of the battery for it to work. Power must be remove from the circuit to reset the SCR.

Page 13: Electronic Components

Transistor

• the transistor works as a current amplifier. It uses a small base current to control a larger collector current.2n3904 NPN Transistor 2n3906 PNP Transistor

Integrated Circuit

• a device that has several components (transistors, resistors, capacitors, diodes, etc) condensed into a very small package. Each IC performs differently according to what is inside.

Integrated Circuits

• To figure out which pins are which, you need to remember that the text ALWAYS faces so you can read it, and the notch, dot, or line is on your left.

• Pin #1 is then on the bottom left corner

Page 16: Electronic Components

Integrated Circuits

• Once Pin #1 is established you read from left to right on the bottom then right to left on the top

4017 Decade Counter Explained

• When a clock pulse (on/off or 9v/0v) is connected to pin #14, the outputs will advance one at a time
