Electromagnetism
Objectives SPI 0807.12.1 Recognize that electricity can be produced using a
magnet and wire coil. SPI 0807.12.2 Describe the basic principles of an electromagnet. SPI 0807.12.3 Distinguish among the Earth’s magnetic field, a magnet,
and the fields that surround a magnet and an electromagnet
I Can:
1. Describe the basic principles of an electromagnet
2. Identify the relationship between an electric current and a magnetic field.
3. Distinguish among the Earth’s magnetic field, a magnet, and an electromagnet.
Properties of Magnets Magnet: any material that attracts iron or materials
containing iron.
1. Two magnetic poles: North and South
2. Magnetic force Like poles repel, opposite poles attract Strongest force at poles
3. Magnetic field: region in which magnetic forces act.

Battery Copper wire Iron core Solenoid: coil of wire
Make stronger by adding more loops in the solenoid.
Uses of Electromagnets Doorbells Electric Motors Telephones
Generate Electricity Produce stronger electric current by moving iron core
through coil of wire. Faster movement → greater current Used
