Electrical Safety at Christmas www.nppd.com | 877.ASK.NPPD (275.6773) To help prevent the most common electrical problems with Christmas lights, NPPD recommends you: Always Never read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions and save them for future reference. check that your Christmas lights are not damaged or broken before use, and check for loose wires. use only replacement bulbs of the same type and rating as those originally supplied. consider buying LED lights, which are more energy efficient, run cooler and last longer. use lights and other electrical decorations certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC). unplug cords when you string lights. switch Christmas lights off and unplug them before you go to bed or leave the house. keep lights away from flammable decorations and other materials that can burn easily. keep packaging for safe storage after use. Avoid storage in damp or excessively hot conditions. allow children to handle lighting products. use indoor-rated lights outside. connect different styles of lighting sets. plug in lights while in the packaging. remove bulbs while the string is plugged in. overload sockets, and try to avoid the use of extension cords or adaptors. use lights that are damaged or faulty. attempt to repair faulty lights—replace them. leave your outdoor lights up year-around. put electrical cords under rugs. IN CASE OF EMERGENCY: If someone does suffer from an electrical shock — make sure you switch off the electricity first, then remove the person from danger, if safe to do so, and contact emergency services.
