Partial discharges are plasma processes which take place generally in a gas. Whenever the electrical field in a gas space exceeds the inception field of the gas, partial discharges are created: on the surface of an insulator, due to conductive contamination, in air inclusions of the insulation as a result of mechanical forces. The gas plasma accelerates ageing and corrosive substances as ozoneand NO2 are created. However the mechanical wear or a surface contamination is usually more harmful than the partial discharge action. As the presence of partial discharges cannot be avoided in rotating machines insulation, mica is applied as a partial discharge resistant medium.By-products of the partial discharge are commonly white powders which can be found in many locations of the machines.



Typical Partial Discharge Phenomena in Rotating Machines

• Loose wedges/bar vibration/slot discharges• Cracked and broken conductors• End winding surface contamination• Damage and corrosion of the corona suppression system• Connection ring external discharge due to vibration• Inter-phase discharge• Insulation degradation• Collector ring, brush sparking• Faults in generator high voltage accessories


Avoid unnecessary rewinds on older machines by maximizing the operating hours from a stator winding

Avoid unexpected in-service failures of the stator winding Find a problem and correct it before failure Find problems on new machines which may still be under

warranty Assess the quality of maintenance repairs and/or rewinds with

before and after readings Compare results from similar machines to focus maintenance

on those with higher levels of PD Identify specific failure mechanisms in the stator winding to

allow for corrective action prior to an outage Improve the overall reliability of motors & generators

It is to be noted that in the past On-Line PDA systems were supplied and installed by:New Oilfield Services: (2001) OEM being IRIS (CANADA) and the scope of work executed as follows:3 Generators ASAB, 3 Generators BUHASA, 3 Generators RUWAIS, 4 Generators BAB as well as 10 Motors RUWAIS and 5 Motors BAB.

GASCO MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION POLICYCHAPTER 7 - ELECTRICAL MAINTENANCE

Generators Inspection:

Special attention shall be given to the HV generators windings.In order to assess their condition on-line PDA should be performed regularly with a recommended interval of 6 months to 1 year. Data may be sent to Vendor's specialist for detailed analysis in case of abnormal data collected.

For the emergency generators which are not PDA tested a thorough visual inspection, insulation resistance check and polarization index measurement should be done on a regular basis with maximum interval of three years.
