ELECTRIC FENCING - 2018

EDITORIAL

Since our creation in 1956, LACME have contributed greatly to the development of electric fencing. Established in France (La Flèche, Sarthe region), we are the foremost european manufacturer and export our technology worldwide. Driven by innovation and product efficiency (First low-impedance fencer in France, first Energiser to be controlled by a remote handset, the I-pulse system and many more). Every year, we apply for several international patents. This translates by the effort shown by our R&D centre to continually improve the "electric fencing system".

Listening attentively to your needs stimulates our development : "The enclosures of tomorrow must remain safe, easy to install and maintain, while being ever more efficient and durable". To be able to do this, LACMÉ today, offers modern technology and intelligent systems that combine efficiency with ease of use. THE ELECTRIC FENCE : HOW DOES IT WORK ?The electrical pulse moves from the energiser through the conductors (wire/rope/tape) seeking any return path to the earth/ground (animal, grass, human etc). When the animal touches the wire the pulse runs through it and completes the return to earth ; the circuit is made. The animal then receives a shock which is perceived as pain and effectively deters it from touching the fence again.

ENERGISER

EARTH CONNECTION

TESTERS

CONDUCTORS INSULATORS

Powered by either the mains or a battery, the energiser must deliver pulses of energy that are suitable to correctly contain or deter the animal concerned (see below for thresholds). The power of each energiser is given in joules (pain perceived by the animal) and can variate from a few milli-joules for short strip grazing type fence systems to 15 Joules for very long fences affected by vegetation.

For the animal to receive a shock of any kind, it is imperative that the energiser is connected to the ground correctly via one or numerous earth stakes. The energiser may require from 2 to 5 earth stakes linked together to achieve an efficient earth connection (see page 32 for more details).

To correctly contain animals, the eletric fence needs to have sufficient voltage and joules. It is important to perform regular checks with a voltmeter. The tests need to be made not only on the fence line but also to test the quality of the earth connection. The loss to the earth should not be superior to 500 volts for the classic and premium range energisers and with smart energisers not superior to 300 volts for the energiser to perform correctly (see page 32).

Good quality conductors (reinforced to withstand mechanical stress and ensuring effective conductivity) will carry the electrical impulses over long distances without power loss. Different materials exist although the most conductive are copper and aluminium.

The insulators permit the electrical current to pass correctly through the conductors without loss , keeping the maximum amount of power within the circuit. The quality of the insulator is important as power can be lost to wooden/metal posts, effectively shortening the distance available to fence. Different insulators should be used for different types of conductors and UV protection is necessary for permanent fencing

LEVELS OF CONTAINMENT BY TYPE OF ANIMAL : EASY/DIFFICULT

A minimum of 100 mJ / 2000 V are necessary to keep the above animal types A minimum of 300 mJ / 2500 V are necessary for the above animal types

Example of an installation using alternating live and earth wiresIdeally the first wire closest to the ground should be connected to the earth terminal to avoid voltage loss to touching grass. If however the first wire must be live, when grass comes into contact, it can be disconnected.

There is no definitive rule, often a single wire is sufficient to correctly guard a docile animal. If an animal has escaped the system, it is generally because it did not touch the wire or there was insufficient power to disuade it from escaping. In the first instance, it is necessary to increase the number of lines on your fence and in the second case check the earth quality or increase the size of the energiser installed.

The resistance of the animal can also come from having thick hide/fur or having thick pads (feet). The installation of extra lines will ensure that the wire passes cleanly through the coat or comes into contact with less insulated parts of the animals body (ears/nose/tongue etc). Also problems with a path back to earth can be the problem; installing alternative +ve and -ve lines may help (see diagram below)

IMPORTANT EARTHING and CONNECTIONS

• Pilot your energiser from your smartphone

• Follow voltage in real-time

• Instant fence incident notifications

LACME INVENTS THE CONNECTED FENCE

See details pages 18-19

The CLOS and SECUR energisers have low impedance technology. Their "high tolerance" enables them to maintain a near maximum level of output power over a wide range of situations : good or poor earth conductivity, short or long fence, zero or medium vegetation... This impedance zone (in yellow on the drawing) corresponds to the most common situations found. Thanks to the HTE technology, LACME improve the power of their CLOS and SECUR energisers : • More than one joule over a longer span • Higher voltage where it counts

THE ENERGISERS

Our energisers are conceived, developed and manufactured at our site in La Fleche (near Le Mans). Our electronic circuits, including our customised transformers, are made "In-house". Our dedicated team of engineers are always ready and willing to intervene at the different stages and processes of manufacture. This translates into an optimum level of reliability and performance for our devices.

Our energisers have a 3 year guarantee from the date of purchase. This guarantee does not cover power surges caused by lightning. We therefore highly recommend the use of lightning protectors or surge protectors protecting the energiser from surges coming from the fence or from the mains (see page 31).

CHOOSING YOUR ENERGISER : 4 QUESTIONS TO BE ASKED

Bad conditions Strong vegetation

5 Km

Average conditions Normal vegetation

10 Km

The vegetation level effects the distance an energiser can fence. If the conditions are unknown, we suggest you take the average conditions as a guideline . Although it is recommended to know this important factor before purchase

Pay attention to the height of the first line as the lower it is to the ground, the more likely the grass will come into contact with it. This effectively means a stronger energiser will be required to recuperate the loss to the vegetation

3/ What are the land conditions or the vegetation levels ?

Ideal conditions Weak vegetation

55 Km

Theoretical distance

350 Km

2/ Which power source do I require ?

Type Pros Cons

MainsPower

• Very high power in case of long fences especially when affected by vegetation

• Maintenance free• Digital technology provides precise data regarding fence condition (low

voltage, incident warnings, etc...)• Switching on/off controlled from your mobile android device (L-Box,

TRANSTEL GSM 300)

• Higher risk of lightening damage(surge due to lightening strikes not covered under guarantee) Energiser needs to be kept in a dry place.

• If the fence is far from buildings a larger amount of Insulated FISOL cable will be required to connect the energiser to the fence line (see page 35).

12VBATTERY

• Autonomous and mobile for remote areas• Battery is rechargeable • Greater autonomy using the ECO 1/5 et I-PULSE systems as well as

additional solar panels• Can also be used with the mains supply with an optional adaptor.

• Requires periodic battery charging• Second battery required during recharge• Strong vegetation reduces battery life• Risk of theft (anti-theft kit pg 31)

9VBATTERY

• Light and portable devices ideal for strip grazing and pets• Can also be used with a 12v battery permitting recharge• Ease of use

• 9 volt batteries cannot be recharged adding to costs• not suitable for long fences or strong vegetation • Risk of theft (anti-theft kit pg 31)

Because animals have different hides/coats, different hooves/feet and also their tolerance to pain, different systems are required to contain or control them. To simplify things we have created 3 groups of animals to help you chose the correct device and equipment.

1/ Which animal do I need to contain or deter ?

Difficult animalssheep, goats, wild boar, wild

game..

Easy animals to contain cattle, calves, pigs, horses,

donkeys...

Small sensitive animalsdogs, rabbits, poultry, cats....

4/ How do I calculate the distance I can fence ?The distance to fence determines the power and size of the energiser required. If you install multiple lines it is not necessary to addition the total number of wires, simply the distance between the first post and the last.

SENTINEL compatibility

If your project is a long fence that is susceptible to strong vegetation , a very powerful energiser will be required as a large amount of power and energy will be lost directly to the ground leaving your fence at risk of not having enough power to safely guard your animals. With our mains energisers there are 2 clearly different technologies The classic and premium ranges CLOS / SECUR are LOW IMPEDANCE technology which have a larger tolerance, which permit them to keep a maximum energy level over a larger scope with less obligations such as the earthing quality, connections, long or short fences, less or medium vegetation...As opposed to the smart range UBISON which have ULTRA LOW IMPEDANCE technology. These devices are specifically designed to combat vegetation and overgrown grass conditions and demand very good earthing levels and highly conductive wires to operate correctly.

IMPORTANCE OF THE EARTHING QUALITY

Ref. : 667.8001 Metre earth stake

For the installation to be efficient, the UBISON requires a an excellent earth installation. 5 earth stakes of 1 metre spaced at 2 to 3 metres apart should be installed. The voltage level measured directly on the final earth stake must not be higher than 300 Volts. If the reading is higher then install additional earth stakes until this figure is achieved.

10 and 15 joule power controlled Ultra Low Impedance energisers. These devices have been specially designed for large fences affected by strong vegetation conditions. They need to be properly installed and earthed in order to perform correctly. The MULTIPULSTRONIC technology permits the energy to be dispersed into the grass to combat the energy loss conditions which traditional energisers cannot cope with(below 500 ohms) at the same time protecting humans from harm(conforms to the A12 legislation).

Alcaline vs Saline ...

As the saline battery discharges, the voltage lowers and creates more work for itself to keep the necessary power to the energiser. With the alkaline technology the voltage stays much higher and the energiser does not drain as much power, this way we have a battery that lasts longer and reduces the cots relating to power supply.

THE IMPORTANCE OF A GOOD EARTH CONNECTION

HOW TO TEST AN EARTH CONNECTION ?

How do I install them ? 1) With a mallet, drive in 2 x 1m earth stakes , separated by 2 m.2) Connect the stakes together (in the ground if possible)using 2.5 mm galvanised steel cable3) Connect them to the earth terminal of the energiser using our insulated FISOL cable(see page 35).4) Pour water onto the earth stakes and repeat this during dry periods of the year to create a better contact with the earth

ATTENTION ! The earth stake of an electric fence must be totally independant from the earth of a domestic house system being at least 10 metres away. Never connect to a canalisation.

ADVICE : - Certain devices such as the UBISON (for dense vegetation) need more efficient earthing than traditionnal devices

(a minimum of 5 earth stakes of 1 m with 3 m spacing between them).- To improve the quality of your earthing system increase the number of 1 m earth stakes.

Simplified procedure :Measure the voltage directly on the final earth stake using a DIGIVOLT (see page 37). If the voltage is superior to 500 V (or 300 V for UBISON), then install another earth stake until the voltage drops below this level.

Precise method :1) Insure that the voltage of the fence wire is at least 2 000 V and that you are 50 m from the nearest earth stake. 2) At this same point carefully place 2 metal rods against the fence wire so a short circuit is achieved and the voltage drops

to at least 1 000 V.3) Measure the voltage directly on the final earth stake using a DIGIVOLT.(see page 37) if the voltage is superior to 500 V (or 300 V for

UBISON), then install another earth stake until the voltage drops below this level.

What is it for ?

The pulses circulating in the wire return to the energiser via the earth and the earth stake(s). To favourise the return of the pulse and conserve the efficiency of the power, the earth stake plays a role of great importance.Improving the earth quality permits, for example, a longer fence to be powered. Also the battery devices can be economised by turning down the variator and not last to be able to withstand the conditions in a better way…

For difficult dry conditions Install a neutral wire system and connect to an earth stake every 100 metres.

Every 100 metres connect to an earth stake to

improve the earth quality

EARTH STAKES

The importance of controlling the installation

Once the energiser has been installed and the fence erected. It will be necessary to control the fence for adequate efficiency. Preferably with an all round professional tool such as the JOULI-PRO (see page 37) or at a minimum the 15Kv controller (this cannot measure the joules only voltage). If the values are not achieved, firstly control the correct installation of the energiser, measuring the voltage loss at the earth stake (see page 32 for details) and finally the rest of the installation (conductors / insulators / junctions / losses etc…) measuring at different points of the fence.

STAKESEARTH

Galvanised steel earth stake for short fence. Specially designed to facilitate for temporary fencing. CAREFUL ! to improve efficiency it is advised to install numerous earth stakes (see page 32)

1m galvanised steel earth stake. Specially designed profile to increase the level of surface contact and improve the earth quality of the fencing system (see p. 32 for details).

Sodium activated mixture for optimal grounding system. With problematic situations (stony or very dry ground), can improve upto 10 times the grounding quality. 1 bucket per 1M-earth stake.

1) Dig a hole of 1 m x Ø 8 cm.

2) Insert a 1m earth stake in the middle and connect each one.

3) Progressively mix the 6kg of BENTONITE with water(environ 5 L) and pour the mixture into the hole.

4) Water with around 20 L of water and refill with earth 1 2 3 4

In difficult dry conditions, increase the earth condition efficiency by using bentonite

The quality of the earth connection is an important element of an electric fence system,it permits the safe return of the pulse signals as the animal comes into contact with the conductor. It is most important to use galvanised steel earth stakes as to avoid corrosion, and to use highly insulated cables with all connections to and from the energiser and earth stakes (see next page) so as not to lose any of the energy/voltage (see advice 32).

CABLESINSULATED

FISOL, FISALU, and FISOL GALVA are cables insulated against high voltage that permit a connection at a distance between 2 points of an electric fencing system without losing energy or voltage, even over long distances. With a reinforced insulated covering (voltage tested to 20 000 V) and studied for high voltage electric fences, these cables can be buried or immersed. Adapt your insulated cable to the system, as to avoid oxydisation at the connection points.FISALU for aluminium wire systems , FISOL GALVA for galvanised steel wire systems and FISOL for polywire/rope/tape systems.

The colour blue is the most visible... What is good conductivity ?

Other criteria...

Man has a trichromatic vision capable of seeing the whole spectrum. Animals have a dichromatic vision which is more amplified towards the blues, violets and ultra-violets.

Human vision(trichromatic)

Breaking strain (Kg) : The higher this figure is the higher the resistance towards physical strain such as when animals push against the fence. This is important when installing permanent fences against wild animals as it is also a barrier.

ANTI UV : Our conductors are treated against UV to conserve their visibilty and longevity

AVAILABLE ELECTRIC FENCING DISTANCE : the better the conductivity is, the longer the fence can be.

INSULATORS WITH ROUNDED EDGES = LONGER CONDUCTOR LIFE !

DID YOU KNOW ?Rounded edges avoids damaging

the conductor

To insure the longevity of your conductors, the insulator needs to have rounded edges on the inside to avoid chaffing in the wind. Also constant manipulation with mobile and semi mobile fences which will prematurly break the polywires copper and stainless steel conductors and filaments.

SPEEDISO EASY DRILL ATTACHMENT

TWO NECESSARY QUALITIES FOR AN INSULATOR

LACME SCREWS

54

To insulate

By its conception :The electric pulse will always try to find a way back to earth via the surface of the insulator. It is therefore important to have a minimum distance between the post and the conductor, this distance is called the “leakage path”.

By its material :If the plastic is of bad quality or too old , the insulation is not achieved, creating losses. This is the reason why UV protection and 100% plastic are very important for longevity.

To protect the conductor

The majority of problems relating to conductors often arise from poor quality insulators. To insure the longevity of the conductor the insulator must not have any sharp edges. The interior of the insulator must have smooth edges to avoid damaging the conductor in windy conditions. When tape is used the insulator must either block the tape or let it move freely, otherwise the conductor will rub and become damaged and eventually break leaving the animals at risk of escaping, also during reeling and reinstallation of temporary fencing.

WHY CHOOSE THE GALVANISED STEEL WIRE FOR YOUR PERMANENT FENCE ?

SPACE BETWEEN EACH POST

Long-lasting installation with low maintenance and low costs

Very resistant and adapted for all animals

Our SECURGAL is a High Tensile galvanised steel so its elasticity accommodates changes in temperature and animals coming in contact with the fence. The SECURGAL PRO has a special Zinc/Alu patented GALFAN coating that ensures 4 times the resistance to corrosion : 95% zinc and 5% aluminium creating a protective layer which delays corrosion and protects any uncoated areas. See page 47.

Installation is particularly delicate because of the high mechanical tension creating constraints and requires a good anchorage for the starting and corner posts. Securgal is relatively easy to install as long as the land is flat and the fence is linear.

In windy or difficult areas, the distance between posts must not be greater than 3 m. You can increase the spacing up to 5 m in sheltered areas. It is also advantageous to alternate fibreglass posts with wood posts (for ex., wooden posts every 9 m and intermediary fibreglass posts every 3m).

The tape must be fully tightened. Tensioning the tape manually without a tool will not provide enough tension (risk of damage due to the wind). An IRUANGLE can be used to provide the best possible tension.

Use insulators that firmly block the tape. Or conversely, insulators that let the tape move freely (will demand a greater tension of the tape).

A horse's vision is particularly sensitive to contrast, therefore the colour of the wire is less important for the animal than the overall aspect of the fence. In this respect, do not hesitate to reduce the width of the tape used and to increase height.Give priority to 20 mm tape. For example, 2 or 3 heights of 20 mm tape will be more effective and visible than 1 or 2 heights of 40 mm tape. It will also cost less !
