What are electric discharges?Electric discharge is another form of light production that is produced by an electric current passing through a gas. For example when you pass by a lit neon sign for a business, or every time you see a flash of lightning.

Lightning is a dramatic example of an electric

discharge through a gas

Neon gas produces this characteristic red color as an

electric current passes through it.

Page 3: ELECTRIC DISCHARGE

How Does it work? Explanation

Light from Electric Discharge occurs when an electric current passes through a gas. The electricity passing through the gas creates energy and causes it to glow.

Page 4: ELECTRIC DISCHARGE

How is it used? Examples

•Lightning•Sparks from Static Electricity•Neon Signs•Xenon Flash Lamp (a lamp commonly found in film and digital cameras)•Strobe lights•Other lamps made with different gases that produce different colored lights
