Democratic Alliance won337 seats while theCongress-led UnitedProgressive Alliance won58 seats , its worst-evertally.The BJP alliance
swept the electorally keystate of Uttar Pradesh, bywinning 71 out of 80
seats. Mulayam Singh’sSamajwadi Party, whichruns the state governmentwon just 5 seats.In Bihar, BJP won 23
out of 40 seats and inDelhi the BJP won all the7 seats. Many prominentCongress ministers lost,including SushilkumarShinde, Kapil Sibal andSachin Pilot. Arun Jaitley was a
prominent loser on theBJP side, undone by anti-incumbency against theruling Akali Dal inAmritsar.Big winners included J
Jayalalithaa’s AIADMK,which won 36 of 39 seatsin Tamil Nadu, andMamata Banerjee’sTrinamool Congress won34 of 42 seats. The AamAadmi Party, which
stunned observers bywinning the Delhi assem-bly last year, made anencouraging Lok Sabhadebut by winning 4 seatsin Punjab. But its chief,Arvind Kejriwal, fell wellshort of Modi in Varanasi.End of counting
brings the curtains downon the poll process thatbegan on March 5, withthe announcement of thepoll schedule. A record66.4% people turned outto cast their ballot in ninephases of the world’sbiggest vote held betweenApril 7 and May 12.A total of 8,251 candi-
dates, including 668women and five transgen-ders, contested the LokSabha battle. The con-testants included 3,234independents.
