READ MORE ON MARTIN’S BLOG: www.electmartin1.blogspot.co.uk Learning from Finland * No to excessive observations * Pensions when you need them – not when you’re
forced into ‘early retirement’ * No to management bullying * Teachers must defend comprehensive
education * LANAC - organising for national action * Ofsted - unreliable, unproven, unjustified
Michael Gove - a teacher assessment * 2013 GCSE Results - Gove pulls up the ladder once again
Supply Teachers - at the sharp end of privatisation * Gove's policies widen the class divide in education
“MICHAEL GOVE OBJECTED when
said that his attacks would
make teaching ‘unbearable’ but
ook at what they would mean:
Ÿ Pay decided by discriminatory
policies and unjust observations
Ÿ Colleagues divided and bullied
into working even longer hours
Ÿ Teachers forced to quit before
they can claim their full pension
Ÿ Education determined by anagenda imposed by privatising
politicians, not children's needs
Every candidiate in this election
can list Gove's attacks but who
will provide the strategy and
eadership needed to stop them?
As a National Officer, I would:
Ÿ Give confidence to teachers to
take the national action needed
Ÿ
Sharpen our communications;explain our case boldly to
parents, press and public
Ÿ Encourage school reps; support
our NUT Local Associations
Ÿ Show members that their Union
understands the relentless
pressures facing teachers - and
that, together, we are going to
do something about them !
We have to learn lessons. Pulling
back from action on pensions in
2012 encouraged Michael Gove
to attack our pay in 2013.
Any further hesitation will invite
worse attacks on our conditions in
2014. That’s why we have to:
Ÿ Campaign in our communities to
explain our fight for education
Ÿ Build NUT/NASUWT school
committees to build unity andmaintain joint strike action
Ÿ Call our national strike this term
and link up with other unions in
dispute like the firefighters
Ÿ Prepare for further action next
term. If Gove won’t retreat, we
should consider a 2-day strike
Ÿ Collect to support colleagues
facing the greatest hardship
Ÿ Organise against unacceptable
pay and appraisal policies too
We would all prefer to be teaching,
not striking. However, our battle to
defend teachers is part of a wider
struggle to defend a genuinely
free, comprehensive education
system. We have a responsibility
to the children we teach - and to
ourselves - to win this struggle”
