PARISH NEWS July 2016
Celebrations and feasting!
2
July will be a busy month! Students
should have returned home, exams are
over and the children will be enjoying
their end of term trips and activities. Staff
and pupils alike will be looking forward to
a few weeks of rest. We hope you all
enjoy your holidays if you heading off to
warmer climes!
We have plenty of events coming up in
the Parish —the Village Day on 9th July
and then the Open Gardens on 16th July
as well as continuing regular activities
and events.
Photos and reports will appear in the next
issue in September. DON’T FORGET...
THERE IS NO AUGUST ISSUE! Items
for the next issue need to be with us by
15th August please. (shared editing)
Congratulations to Sue Briggs, our former
Editor whose daughter, Amelia, was
married at St Andrew’s Church at the end
of May.
Also included this month is an item about
the life of Marian Kingston. David kindly
provided some notes which were used as
part of her funeral service on 17th May, in
which I was pleased to be able to take
part as a singer.
Many residents will know that Ken and
Lorraine Crossett have recently moved
from the village to be nearer to their
family. The move has been planned for
some time but was completed rather
more suddenly than anticipated. Ken and
Lorraine, and their family, have been part
of the village community in many ways
with Church, School, Cubs, and Parish
Council. Parish News has received many
contributions from Ken, particularly over
recent years as Parish Council Chairman.
We should like to say thanks and wish
them the best of luck in their new home.

Neighbourhood Plan
The Draft Neighbourhood Plan has finally
been published after 4 years hard
work. This is a major milestone of which
the Steering Group should be really
proud. The website & documentation can
be accessed at:-
www.consultation.caddse.info
A leaflet will be going to every household
and we’d like to encourage everyone
to engage with the consultation process.
What is Neighbourhood Planning?
A Neighbourhood Plan provides an
excellent opportunity for communities to
identify local issues that matter to them,
and provide solutions at a local level.
Town or Parish Councils are the
‘qualifying bodies’ who can make a
neighbourhood plan. It can cover a whole
town or Parish, or just part of it. Two or
more Parishes can work together to
produce a joint plan if they wish to do so,
which is what Caddington & Slip End
have done.
Editors’ Notes
3
Well the day is almost upon us and after nearly a year of planning we hope for a
successful and fun day that will bring many people of our villages together. We just
need you to support the day now – take a look at the Village Day leaflet which will
either be inside the magazine or through the door. You will see that there is
something for everyone.
Raffle tickets are now selling in the Social Club, Frog and Rhubarb, Rising Sun and
the Plough and via some other clubs and groups in the village. Amazing prizes on
offer – so make sure you get your tickets at £1 each.
BUT WE ARE STILL SHORT OF MAN AND WOMAN POWER TO HELP US TO
SET UP THE EVENT AND CLEAR THE FIELD AFTER IT. If you would help for an
hour or so on Friday afternoon, Saturday morning or Saturday after 4 o’clock we
could really use you help.
Contact us on 0795 858 7595, 0781 0002 942 or via our email
slipendvillageday.com or via facebook.
Thankyou in advance from Tracey, Jill, Nikki and Sally.

Community
Projects Group
(CPG) We're still
here!
Although Sarah Minnighan, Keith Holme
and Veronica Williams have now stood
down from their positions on the
Committee, and our thanks go to them
for their considerable contributions, we
do have a new Committee. The CPG will
still continue to function with Simon
Patterson as Chair, Rosemary Wickens
as Vice Chair, Carol Brennan as
Treasurer and also Andy Prothero. Both
Keith and Sarah will continue to assist
from the sidelines. If anyone would like
to be our Secretary we still have a
vacancy.
The Slip End CPG is a unique
organisation in the landscape of village
life. It provides an informal forum for
local groups and residents to bring their
ideas forward and seek support from
local funds. The CPG will still continue to
receive block funding from the Parish
Council. This 'Community Fund' is used
either to support local groups, through
the annual grant process or to assist in
ensuring that vital community assets,
such as the Peter Edwards Hall and
Playing Fields, the Crawley Playground
and the Village Hall are available to
residents, for generations to come.
The refurbishment of the Crawley
Playground equipment and its
surroundings, is the main project
outstanding from the Parish Plan, so the
Committee would appreciate any
positive input from residents as to how
the area can be improved for the
enjoyment of your children.
Although the CPG won't meet on a
regular monthly basis, the Committee
will still have meetings on at least four
occasions each year. The CPG will
continue to support all the village
organisations including the Good
Neighbour Scheme and the Parish
News, organise the distribution of the
Christmas Biscuits and administer the
Benevolent Fund. The revitalised Village
Day also has our full support, so please
come along to the Playing Fields on the
9th July! If you have a project in mind,
which might be of benefit to fellow
villagers, why not contact us for a chat?
As well as reading your PN, keep up to
date with what's happening in your
village by visiting the Parish website,
www.slipend.co.uk and also find the
'Slip End Parish Community Facebook
Page. Don't forget to 'like' us.
The FB page offers current
information which you may need
to be aware of. So keep an eye
on it! Remember, if you want to publicise
your local events, please continue to
contact Sarah on:-

Garden Party in honour of
Her Majesty’s 90th Birthday
Following a service at St Andrew’s
celebrating the Queen’s 90th Birthday,
members of the St Andrew’s Church
congregation were joined by other Parish
residents at a Garden Party at the
Vicarage. Unfortunately, the weather
failed to co-operate so the food was set
out and eaten indoors.
There was a good spread of sandwiches
and other savouries brought along by
different people. The array of cakes
looked (and tasted) delicious. The
children helped to prepare some of the
food, including making a rather
spectacular jelly!
A few people dressed in red white and
blue. Richard and Marion Palmer looked
especially impressive (as seen on the
cover). Cathy Pullinger and Sylvia
Harland donned their hats in honour of
the occasion.
The proceedings ended with a bonfire in
the garden. The “Beacon” can be seen
burning well in the photo.
Thanks to Cathy and Iain Pullinger and
to all who contributed to the table.
Photos can be seen here, on the cover
and alongside Cathy’s item for this
month.

Feasts and the Kingdom of God
Iain and I really enjoyed hosting the Queen’s
Birthday celebration lunch – with the rather
less than ideal weather it was a good thing
perhaps that there were not too many people
– we all managed to fit into the vicarage.
Hopefully there will be better weather for
the rest of the summer’s outdoor events.
I have been struck as I have been reading my
Bible readings this week in Luke chapter 14
that Jesus often likened the Kingdom of God
to a feast. In yesterday’s reading he urged
people not to seek the best places with the
most important people at a feast but to freely
associate with anybody, he himself loved to
eat with the outcasts and misfits.
Then in today’s reading he tells of a story in
which the host prepared a great banquet and
sent out lots of invitations, but one after
another the replies came in from people who
could not come, for various brilliant
sounding reasons. The host feels angry and
sends his servants out into the streets and
lanes of the city to invite other people to the
banquet, “My house must be filled,” he
said. More come but still there is room and
the servants go out again into the highways
and hedges inviting the poor and the
homeless.
Later those who had first been invited
wanted to get in, but by then it was too late.
Jesus often warned in various ways that we
need to respond to his invitation to us, when
it arrives, when we receive it. We can only
enter the Kingdom of God when we
personally respond to his invitation to save
us, to open the door of heaven to us through
his death and resurrection; there is nothing
automatic about out entrance to heaven. It is
for those who have responded to his call hear
and now.
When we do this we have the greatest feast
to look forward – the marriage feast where
our love for God and his love for us will be
celebrated. When the Bride of Christ, the
Church will come home to her Bridegroom
and Saviour and they will be united in love
for ever.
Every blessing, Cathy

Marian Kingston 1943—2016
Marian’s parents Phyllis and Norman Draper
moved to Leagrave in wartime since work
was easier to find than in Wales and
Lancashire. Children, John and Marian were
born there; Marian on 9th December 1943.
For much of her childhood Marian was ill in
the ‘Alexandra Hospital for children with hip
disease’. This was located at Stockwood
House in those days. She spent many
months separated from her family then,
after recovering. returned home to lead a
normal childhood.
As a teenager she was part of the St Luke’s
Leagrave Youth Fellowship, through which
she met David. They married in 1965 at St
Luke’s moving to Limbury then on to Slip
End.
Marian loved children and her working life
was spent in nursing, looking after babies at
St Mary’s Hospital then bringing up her own
children. Later she returned to work at
‘Tanglewood’ nursing home for the elderly in
Markyate.
Marian and David had three sons, Andrew,
Timothy and Simon and a daughter, Emma.
Marian was on the PTA Committee and
taught at St Andrew’s Sunday School. She
enjoyed taking part with the St Andrew’s
singing groups and the Chiltern Singers over
the years. She performed in some of the
Harvest Supper Entertainment at the Village
Hall and sang in many services and concerts
with the groups of Singers. As a tribute, the
St Andrew’s Singers and some Chiltern
Singers members were pleased to sing as
part of the service to celebrate Marian’s Life
on 17th May.
Marian was an excellent cook. She spent
much time preparing food for her family and
friends. In ‘spare’ time Marian was often
seen doing needlework or knitting; her
speciality was making knitted soft toys.
Marian, David and family enjoyed many
holidays together and later travelled with
friends. They often returned to familiar
places. Parsonage Farm in Devon was a
family favourite. David’s business took him
to many countries and Marian sometimes
went along too, particularly to Italy and
America. They made many friends on their
travels and often returned to Lake Maggiore
in Italy — a favourite place.
More recently, Marian’s health deteriorated
affecting her mobility. She spent time in
hospital and at home with carers. She
enjoyed visits from friends and family,
especially her much loved Granddaughter
Milly.
She died on
24th April
and will be
missed by
many.

Slip End Book Club Update
I am delighted to report that we have
been able to establish a Book Club in
the village. At the time of writing we
have had 3 meetings with approximately
6 people attending each one. Every
meeting has been lots of fun, full of
lively debate and interesting
conversation.
Please do join us! We will be meeting
once a month, on a Tuesday at 8pm in
the Frog and Rhubarb, details as
follows:
June – A God in ruins – Kate Atkinson –
28th June
July – Elizabeth is Missing – Emma
Healey – 26th July
August – The Cuckoo’s Calling - Robert
Galbraith – 23rd August
September – The heart goes last –
Margaret Attwood – 27th September
We are choosing our books based on
recommendations such as the Simon
Mayo Book Club, Richard & Judy book
club, and awards such as the Costa
Book Awards, so hopefully the books will
be easy to get on kindle or from the
shops or library.
We have a page on Facebook, please
let me know if you’d like to join and I’ll
add you to the group. (email

Luton Hoo Estate Walled Garden
Our Open Wednesdays are now well under
way with a new feature - a woodland pathway
through the Capability Brown designed
Flower Garden Wood to the Shooting Lodge,
our new setting for the café. Rhododendrons,
which line the path, are very colourful, come
and see them in their full glory.
All the usual attractions are available: the
back sheds including the head gardeners’
office, labourers’ mess and the potting shed
with the World War II graffiti can be viewed
(the Land Army were trained here). And
have a chat with our volunteer gardeners and
conservationists who will be out in full
strength. Produce and plants from the garden
can be purchased as well as Luton Hoo
honey.
This garden revival is still ongoing – don’t
expect to see a Chelsea show garden – and
our guides will explain how the project began
and the interesting history of the garden. A
tour is included in the entry price of £5 and a
new tour of the Victorian farm buildings can
be taken for an additional £3 (but please
check our website for availability). In the
1860’s this was the most industrialised farm
in England - see photo.
Open every Wednesday until the end of
September from 1030-1530. £5 entry includes
tour. Access is via the A1081 between Luton
and Harpenden, take West Hyde Road/
Newmill End turning and turn left through
black gates. There is no entrance from the
hotel. Use the Postcode LU1 4LE.

SEADA
Saturday 4th June saw a coach leave Slip End
for Hunstanton with Senior Citizens and
friends on board. We arrived at midday.
Although it was cold, it was dry and everyone
could do what they liked until 4:30pm when a
tea of Fish & Chips or ham salad was
provided. This was enjoyed by all. By this
time the sun had come out for a pleasant
journey home, provided by Gareth.
Bingo is every other week at 8pm in the
Village Hall. This helps to pay for the
outings. We should be pleased to see you on a
Thursday evening.

Wedding Congratulations!
On 28th May, Sue Briggs’ daughter, Amelia Cowell, was married
to James England at St Andrew's Church. The service was led by
Rev Cathy Pullinger and the organist/
pianist was Liz Higgens. Amelia (looking
stunning in a vintage dress) returned to
her roots for her Wedding, as she was
baptised at St Andrew’s in June 1982,
amidst a church full of flowers. (There was a Flower Festival on at
the time.)
Groom, James, is from
Gloucester and they
met at Transport for
London (TFL) so the
wedding was on a Transport theme (with some
“Vintage” reflecting Amelia's love of this). They
hired a Routemaster bus for many of the guests
who toasted the happy couple aboard the bus on
the way to Lodge Farm at Kings Walden. The
reception, with decorated Tepees, included
afternoon tea and a singer, games (including
vintage Catch a Duck, Hoopla, Coconut Shy) and special guest Alice in Wonderland who
came to entertain the children in “The Secret Garden” at the
venue. There was also a vintage ice-cream van with free ice-
creams (the children couldn't believe their luck). There was a
sweepstake to guess the length of time the speeches would
take and an amazing amount of £230 was made from
donations for the British Lung
Foundation for which they were
very grateful. Later there was a
Hog Roast and dancing through the
night with a special performance
from lookalike Tina Turner Tea
Lady. All in all a wonderful day full
of lasting memories.
13
The Chatty Club
The Chatty Club is continuing to be a
most enjoyable gathering at the Frog
and Rhubarb every Tuesday from
2pm—4pm. We have a laugh, which is
much needed these days.
For the princely sum of just £2.50, we
get sandwiches, snacks, chips and a
delicious sweet (often with a second
helping if you are lucky) also all the tea
and coffee you can drink, all supplied by
the cheerful staff.
Transport could be arranged if needed
so please come along. Join us for a
couple of hours—we haven’t bitten
anyone yet!
A few outings are also being planned for
later in the year.
To contact us for more details, please
call Jean on 01582 421304 or Kathy on
01582 457362.

Children’s Activities
EXCITING TIMES AHEAD AT
ST ANDREW'S!
Well, this is the time of year when we
usually start advertising our October
Holiday Club. However, we've decided
that once a year just isn't enough - we
want to give the children of the village
an opportunity to join us for a fun-filled
event EVERY school holiday! From the
summer holidays onwards we will be
organising a range of events which build
on what we know are the most popular
parts of Holiday Club - sports and
games, singing, dancing, acting,
making things and eating! All of these
will be encompassed within the same
friendly and caring atmosphere that you
have come to expect from the team at St
Andrew's, and many will be presented
within the context of a story from the
Bible .
The first of these exciting new outreach
events will take place on Wednesday
27th July from 10:30am - 1:30pm and
will be a games and sports day for
children from school years 1 to 6,
culminating in a picnic lunch at the
playing fields, with the Peter Edwards
Hall available as a backup if the weather
doesn't cooperate! There will be team
games and individual
challenges, traditional (and not so
traditional) races, and of course plenty
of parachute games! This is a free event
with drinks provided, but children will be
required to bring their own picnic lunch.
In order to properly supervise this
event, we will need to know how many
children to expect so would ask that you
book your child's place by calling
Charlotte on 01582 521798 or emailing
[email protected] with your child's
name, age and contact information.
Keep an eye open for details of other
upcoming events in future issues of the
Parish News!

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon, mid-
June, twelve members visited 15 Gade
Valley Cottages, Great Gaddesden. The
garden was a 165ft x 30ft sloping rural
garden with patio, lawn, borders and two

The paths lead through a woodland area
emerging by a wildlife pond and sunny
border. A choice of seating offered
sunny rural views or quiet shady
contemplation with sounds of rustling

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As I write this, the re-pointing of our church
is almost at an end. The work has been
approved by our ‘Historic’ Architect, and the
stone mason will soon complete his work and
then our dear church will be ‘brand new’ and
look loved and cared for (because it is!). Our
thanks go to our builder Tony Griffin and his
workers, and to our Property Steward
Lorraine Law supported by Vic Holliman, for
seeing the job through to completion. A big
thank you to our church members and to the
many village friends who supported our fund
raising efforts to pay for the project, we had
no help with grants or funding. No doubt
there will soon be a new ‘improvement
project’, as there always is with historic
buildings!
The church has received a donation of money
in memory of Peter Yeoman and his widow
Sybil and family have asked us to buy a
container to go into our Baptismal Font which
sadly leaks, we currently use a bowl from the
kitchen. With the remaining money we will
buy some more Hymn books as we run out
when we have a big service. Our grateful
thanks to the Yeoman family for their kind
donation.
Please note there will be no Bible Study or
Fellowship meetings in August, we will give
our leaders a rest. Cakes & Company and
Coffee Evenings will continue as usual.
On 24th July at 9.30am Rev. Phil Horner
leads his last service at Aley Green before his
retirement, everyone welcome to attend. A
reminder that our Summer Services from 24th
July will begin at 9.30am, for 45 minutes.
At the beginning of September Rev. Nigel
Bibbings will be joining us, looking after
Aley Green and six other village churches in
our South Bedfordshire Circuit. We look
forward to welcoming him.
Please come and join us for a service or event
over the Summer, you will be given a warm
welcome as always.
We take this opportunity to wish you peace,
relaxation and joy this holiday season,
whether at home or away may the sun shine
on you.
God’s blessings from all at Aley Green
Methodist Church.
outdoors, get more active and reap the
benefits.
The walks are all sociable and you don't
need any special equipment to join in, just
comfortable shoes. To register to walk
either sign up online at their website or just
By the time you are reading this I hope the
weather will have warmed up and we will all
be enjoying some warm sunny weather.
With such a cold spring it has been difficult
to get things to germinate but hopefully
everything will catch up.
In the greenhouse tomatoes and cucumbers
should be bearing fruit; a liquid fertiliser
should be applied every 7-10 days to
encourage the fruits to ripen. Blackcurrants
can be pruned after fruiting, cutting out the
old wood, tie in new shoots of blackberries
and loganberries but keep them separate
from the fruiting shoots. Summer fruiting
raspberries can be cut down as the fruiting
canes are finished, but leave the new shoots
because they will bear next year’s crop.
Tidy up the strawberry bed when the fruits
are finished.
Deadhead roses on a regular basis to
encourage a second flush in the autumn and
keep an eye out for greenfly, black spot,
mildew and rust. Tie young stems of dahlias
to their supports with soft string or raffia and
if large blooms are required then disbud the
lower buds to get long stems for cutting and
arranging in a vase. Chrysanthemums can
be treated the same way, but spray varieties
should be left, although stake and tie-in
shoots to avoid wind damage. Prune
deciduous shrubs such as Jasmine and
Philadelphus after flowering by removing
spent flowers and weak shoots.
Gladioli will not need staking for normal
garden use but keep well watered and weed
free. Irises can be divided and replanted this
month and cut the top half of the leaves off
to avoid wind damage. July is the month
when lilies are at their best and unless you
want to save the seed they should be
deadheaded as the flowers fade, water
carnations and pinks if the weather is dry.
Early this month sow Sweet Williams and
wall flowers for colour in the spring. Rock
gardens will look somewhat drab from now
until the autumn but best to keep the weeds
down to prevent the alpines from being
overwhelmed, so keep weeding and
trimming alpines and water if necessary.
Mounded or carpeting plants not showing
new growth should have soil mixture and
fertilser worked into them. Patio containers
and hanging baskets will require watering at
least once a day and deadhead to keep them
looking their best.
If the weather is hot and dry and there isn't a
hosepipe ban, then water the lawn regularly,
aerate by spiking with a fork as this will help
the water penetrate well below the surface
where it's needed to keep it looking green.
Complete planting of leeks this month as
well as late brussel sprouts, winter cabbage
and spring broccoli, also plant swedes by the
middle of the month. Keep pinching out the
side shoots of tomato plants (except bush
varieties) to get decent size fruits. In the
herb garden make further sowings of
Chervil, Dill and Parsley and remember to
harvest just before they come into full bloom
if you are going to dry them for future use.
Don't forget to support the Open Gardens
event on Saturday 16th July. Until next
month happy gardening!
Slip End Village School
Our German Friends
During the summer term, the excitement of outdoor learning and the promise of a
variety of trips and visits bring a new dimension to school life.
Recently, we were visited by our German friends from Eitorf. Year 4 pupils from both
Slip End and Caddington Village Schools spent 3 memorable days with our visitors
showing them around our communities and forming firm friendships.
During the visit, we were also able to make good use of the school swimming pool and
together we created a ‘face’ collage which you can see in the photograph at the top of
this page. All of the children were able to take a ‘face’ home with them with a
message written on the back from their partner; this was a super memento of the visit.
One of the visit days was spent at Stockwood Park where the children took part in a
range of activities. Photographing the Mossman collection, creating Andy Goldsworthy
outdoor sculptures and Games were all much enjoyed.
Everyone involved had a fantastic time and we are looking forward to another visit next
year.
_______________________________________________________
As the end of the school year approaches, once again we will not be saying, ‘Goodbye’
to any of our pupils. Our current Year 5 class will all be staying with us and will
become our first Year 6 class in September. It is a really exciting time for the school
and we look forward to all that the new academic year will bring.
We would like to thank you for your support during the past year; it has been good to
see so many of you at school events such as Quiz nights and the Summer Fayre. As
always, we ask that you continue to visit our school website at :-
http://www.slipend.beds.sch.uk/ where you will find more information about the life of
our school and a regularly updated calendar of events.
We wish you all a very enjoyable summer holiday.
The Plough
Just a catch up of what’s been happening in
the Plough through May & June… It was
with great sadness that we said goodbye to
our darts team captain Jez Donovan at his
wake on 20th April, he had a great send off so
many came to pay respects and celebrate his
life. It was a lovely sunny afternoon and it
went very well. All our love goes out to his
family & friends.
We celebrated our bar worker Steph’s
boyfriend’s birthday party on 30th April. A
good time was had by all.
On the 5th may Pam King and 23 friends all
came for fish and chips it was a great pleasure
to host the afternoon for them all. A great
time was had by all and we look forward to
hopefully doing it for them again.
On the 7th May Mrs Long from Half-Moon
Lane in Pepperstock celebrated her birthday
in style with lots of guests invited to a meal to
celebrate the special day with her at which
they all had a lovey time.
On the 14th May Jenny Jempsom and 75 of
her guests came to celebrate her birthday
party and had a great time.
On 23rd May the Plough held the finals of the
dominoes, which was unusual as it is
normally held at Slip End club, but they
double-booked so we had the pleasure of
hosting the evening. They all had a good time
and our very own Linda Wyres and Ian Brand
stole the night with Ian coming 1st and Linda
2nd in the singles and they won the doubles.
Well done to you both.
On the 28th May Tracey and Ian Burke held
their Wedding Blessing at the Plough in the
marquee. The day was good and hot, the same
as the sit down meal that the Plough
provided. The next day they returned for a
barbeque with their families as it was
Tracey’s 50th birthday and returned again for
lunch on the Bank Holiday Monday they just
couldn’t stay away! We would like to take
this opportunity to congratulate them and
thank them for choosing the Plough to host
their weekend
On the 4th June Eugene Kane held his
grandson’s 1st birthday party here. They had
the use of the marquee and also hired a
bouncy castle and had a lovey afternoon.
On the 8th June the Classic Car Club held its
monthly meeting here as they have done for
the last 20yrs with Doug. Anyone who is
interested in talking about classic cars is more
than welcome to come along. It is held the
second Wednesday of every month.
Photography Group
The Photography Group held its AGM in
May and, amongst other things,
discussed places to visit on trips out.
The meeting was followed by a buffet.
Thanks to the Social Club, which is our
regular meeting place.
It was agreed that those who wished to
do so would meet weekly and while the
evenings are light and fine there would
be trips out offering opportunities to take
pictures.
There will be one formal meeting a
month—as advertised in the programme
of events. These will mostly be on the
third Tuesday but in some cases the
date is different due to availability of
speakers. One evening in June
involved practising portrait Photography
outside, prior to the formal June
meeting, which was a visiting speaker
talking about Outside Portraits. Several
members used those who were
available as models for their
experiments. Some of these were quite
successful! July’s meeting is a talk by
Colin Southgate on Tuesday 12th. July.
A group went to Hemel Hempstead Old
Town one week and, following the major
thunderstorms, a few members ventured
to Batford Springs Nature Reserve, near
Harpenden. There was plenty of water in
the River Lea. It was tempting to stand
on the stepping stones to take pictures
but not very safe as the water was
pouring over them!
