OPENING HYMN

God of Day and God of Darkness

Verse I

God of day and God of darkness, Now we stand before the night;

As the shadows stretch and deepen, Come and make our

darkness bright. All creation still is groaning For the dawning of your might, When the Son of

peace and justice Fills the earth with radiant light.

Still the nations curse the darkness, Still the rich oppress

the poor; Still the earth is bruised and broken By the ones who still want more. Come and wake us from our sleeping, So our hearts cannot ignore All the people lost and broken, All your children at

our door.

INTRODUCTION to the DAY and OPENING PRAYER

Presider:

There is no one in God’s family who belongs on the sidelines. Today, Jesus is challenged by a woman in need and overlooked by her community. She challenges the world order that cast her and her daughter aside

and reminds us all that even those we consider the least all belong to God’s family. Jesus affirms this woman and heals her daughter. This action reminds us that God loves and cares for us, that we are all one family in Christ, and that we are called to care for the physical and spiritual needs of all around us, no matter how much we may wish to overlook them.

Observe what is right, do what is just; for my salvation is about to come, my justice, about to be revealed. The foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, ministering to him, loving the name of the LORD, and becoming his servants—all who keep the sabbath free from profanation and hold to my covenant, them I will bring to my holy mountain and make joyful

SECOND READING

Romans 11:13-15, 29-32

Lector:

A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Romans:

Brothers and sisters: I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I glory in my ministry in order to make my race jealous and thus save some of them. For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable. Just as you once

disobeyed God but have now received mercy because of their disobedience, so they have now disobeyed in order that, by virtue of the mercy shown to you, they too may now receive mercy. For God delivered all to disobedience, that he might have mercy upon all.

All Reply: Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL

Matthew 15:21-28

Presider:

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew.

At that time, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, “Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon.” But Jesus did not say a word in answer to her. Jesus’ disciples came and asked him, “Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us.” He said in reply, “I was

sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But the woman came and did Jesus homage, saying, “Lord, help me.” He said in reply, “It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” Then Jesus said to her in reply, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And the woman’s daughter was healed from that hour.

The Gospel of the Lord.

All Reply: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

HOMILY

For the homily, you may quietly reflect on the Word of God, listen to or read Fr. Bob’s

Homily, or the presider may preach a homily based on the readings for the day.

After the homily, you may wish to spend a few moments speaking with each other

about the readings and how they apply to your life. Children should be especially

encouraged to share what they have learned from the Word of God.

CONCLUDING HYMN How Can I Keep from Singing

Verse I

My life flows on in endless song. Above earth's lamentation I hear the clear, though far-off, hymn That hails a new creation. No

storm can shake my in-most calm While to that Rock I'm clinging. Since Christ is Lord of heaven

and earth, How can I keep from singing?

Page 28: ELEBRATION of the LITURGY...restless 'Til they safe to you return; Finding you in one another, We shall all your face discern. Presider: In the name of the Father, and of the Son,

Verse II

Through all the tumult and the strife I hear that music ringing. It

finds an echo in my soul. How can I keep from singing? No

storm can shake my in-most calm While to that Rock I'm clinging. Since Christ is Lord of heaven

and earth, How can I keep from singing?

Page 29: ELEBRATION of the LITURGY...restless 'Til they safe to you return; Finding you in one another, We shall all your face discern. Presider: In the name of the Father, and of the Son,

Verse III

The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart, A fountain ever

springing! All things are mine since I am his! How can I keep

from singing? No storm can shake my in-most calm While to

that Rock I'm clinging. Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth, How can I keep from

singing?
