Shirley Jacksons short story, The Lottery,

aroused much controversy and criticism in

1948, following its debut publication, in theNew Yorker.

Jackson uses irony and comedy to

suggest an underlying evil, hypocrisy, and weakness of human kind.

Her use of friendly language among the villagers and the

presentation of the lottery as an event similar to the

square dances and Halloween programs illustrates the

lottery as a welcomed, festive event.

The surrealism of this idea is most evident

    through Jacksons tone.

    OPINION

At the first time we read the

story, we thinks that The Lottery

winner is a lucky person. But, at

the end of the story, we foundthat The Lottery is a unlucky

    person who (stoned) was a

    scapegoat of the tradition.

    Scapegoat

The winner of The Lottery is

sacrifice to bear the sins of the

    villagers. Mrs. Hutchinson was

    violently stoned by her family

    and friends because the villagers

believe that she as the winner of

The Lottery can bear their sins.

IronyWe can see that the irony in this story is one of the thing that attract the

readers. At first we predict everything going to be alright but it actually vice

versa. For example, the presentation of the lottery as an event similar to

the square dances and Halloween programmed illustrated. Actually at last

The Lottery is the person who being stones by family and friends.
