Elder Stubbs Charity Allotments 2017 Newsletter - Summer Edition Saturday 19th August - Elder Stubbs Vegetable Show & Festival The vegetable Show worked well last year which was the first time that we had put it in our own marquee. This year we will again be using the marquee which should be located in the same area. Dear Tenant, you can help enormously to maintain our Vegetable Show tradition by helping us to put on a great show with you being a part of it! Participation is the main thing, just choose what you can contribute as an entry from our category list. It can be the longest broad bean, heaviest marrow, 3 similar sized and good looking courgettes, a random selection of 5 vegetables of your choice etc. There is a shield which will be awarded for the Best in Show item, chosen by our judges to be the most outstanding exhibit and we are also able to include a prize to the winner of £40. Over the past 2 shows this has included some very well made and presented scones by Ms June Howells and last year for a very artistic presentation of vegetables by Ms Merril Lewis. Restore also provided an award for the most successful entrant which last year was won by Steppin’ Stones and will again be awarded this year. We are hoping that John Purves will again be able to exercise his judgement to proclaim the best in each category and he will also be joined by Mr. Mike Kent. It is a great pleasure to welcome John back to Elder Stubbs. He has been a leading light in the past development of the site with the layout of the Allotment Plots, planting of the woodland, orchards and hedges, and not least being a part of the team to invite Restore and Steppin’ Stones to have their allotment base at Elder Stubbs. John reluctantly hung up his allotment plot trowel this season after his former participation with us for the best part of 60 years! To encourage and assist with John’s judgement prowess he particularly enjoys a good Victoria Sponge cake noting that last years included some excellent examples! A great challenge to see if the quality can be surpassed this time! The Vegetable Show: Saturday morning 8am.

Saturday 19th August - Elder Stubbs Vegetable Show & Festival

The vegetable Show worked well last year which was the first time that we had put it in our own marquee.

Restore also provided an award for the most successful entrant which last year was won by Steppin’ Stones and will again be awarded this year.

We are hoping that John Purves will again be able to exercise his judgement to proclaim the best in each category and he will also be joined by Mr. Mike Kent. Along with this Newsletter there will be a Category List form for the show with details of timing etc. Please keep it somewhere safe for use on the day although we will have some spare copies in case you forget yours.

Proceeds from the show and auction will go to Elder Stubbs Charity Allotments to support its objectives and the management and upkeep of the site.

Elder Stubbs Festival - Starts at mid-dayThe Festival is organised by Restore providing fun and entertainment for all the family as well as promoting their work with helping to assist their members who are recovering from mental illness. There will be live music, an interesting range of food and beverages provided by stallholders and from Restore, lots of children’s activities including face painting, sailboats, pony rides etc. (The described list is based on previous years’ activities). Community groups also take the opportunity to promote their activities and causes with which they are strongly connected.

Every year Restore staff, members and supportive volunteers work really hard to put on the Festival.

Additional volunteer support is welcomed and if you would like to help please contact Mary Robertson at Restore E-mail [email protected] or telephone 01865 747176

For stall information, please contact Rachel Wastie on 01865 455839 or [email protected]

Tenants Open Meeting - Tuesday September 12th at 7pmThis will be held in the Restore Buildings by our main entrance all tenants are welcome!

We will have guest speakers from Restore and Steppin’ Stones and it will be a great opportunity to hear about developments with their charities, the work which they do with their members and what plans they have for their growing areas at the allotments.

An excellent opportunity to meet Charlotte Attlee (Recovery Coordinator), James Downs (Recovery Worker) and Jessica Reynolds (Recovery Worker and Coordinator on Fridays) if you have not already done so. Part or all of their team will be present at the meeting.

Guy Scoteche is the Centre Manager at The Porch (Steppin’ Stones) and he is responsible for their allotment plans and work.

If you are supportive of the important work of these charities it is also a good chance to find out in what you can be of help.

Trustees will also be in attendance at the meeting and it provides an opportunity to discuss any issues that you have with them.

Refreshments will be provided.

Kings Seed Catalogues - These provide very good value seed representing roughly a 30% saving on usual prices. I have notified NSALG how many catalogues we need and they should arrive early August.

I plan to leave them as before for you to help yourself from under cover by the restore buildings in or near the metal cabinet near to the toilets, or in a box by the Bhandari Close gate.

Our co-ordination of the order also raises funds for Elder Stubbs with our receiving a percentage of the order cost. Your order will be individually packaged and you will be notified when it is ready for collection.
