Ruth was born in the state of Maine on

September 3, 1926, to Edward and Libby

Gordon. The next to the youngest of five

children, she had a very strict Baptist

upbringing. After graduating high school in

1944, Ruth was recruited by the government to work for the

U.S. Department of Treasury in Washington, D.C. It was

there that she met a man from Midland, Walter “Red” Dodd,

who was serving in the U.S. Navy. They married in May,

1945, and three days later Walter left on a volunteer mission

over the Burma Road. It was eight months before she saw

her husband again.

The Dodds eventually were blessed with two children. Their

daughter, Lana Cooley, lives in Midland, and their son, Greg

Dodd, lives in Lubbock with his wife, Dixie. Ruth has four

grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

In 1966, Walter and Ruth studied the Scriptures with a

North “A” elder, “Chief” Wallace, and were soon baptized.

Ruth taught two and three year olds in Bible Classes for

seventeen years, and she so much enjoyed the eagerness

to learn and the love of little children that age. Walter served

as a deacon for approximately the same length of time.

Music has always been a part of Ruth’s life. Age has slowed

her fingers on the piano, and, when it comes to her singing

voice, as Solomon said, the “pipes are rusty.” But Ruth still

tries – just recently she impressed four young men from the

Op Camp program by performing on her keyboard when they

visited her home.

Ruth’s husband, Walter, passed away on October 17, 1995.

But with God’s help, she carries on. Always thankful for

adding her to Christ’s Church, Ruth appreciates all the

brothers and sisters in Christ who have loved and

encouraged her and Walter through the years. As the

final verse of the old hymn, “How Sweet, How Heavenly”

puts it, “Love is the golden chain that binds.”
