Over the last couple of months the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme has been rolled out across

    East Lancashire.

This means that most people in their sixties will have already received an invitation from the pro-gramme. The NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme offers screening every two years to all men

and women aged 60 to 69.

It is important to note, however, that exactly when the invitation is sent out depends upon a personsdate of birth. For example, some areas began sending invitations to people with even birthdays (60,62, 64, etc). Others started with those with odd birthdays (e.g. 61, 63, 65). It can take up to two

years for every eligible person in an area to be invited.

About one in 20 people in the UK will develop bowel cancer during their lifetime. It is the third most

common cancer in the UK, and the second leading cause of cancer deaths, with over 16,000 peopledying from it each year.

Regular bowel cancer screening has been shown to reduce the risk of dying from bowel cancer by 16

per cent. People over 70 can request a screening kit by calling the free-phone helpline 0800 707 6060.

Most areas will have sent out invitations to all those eligible by the end of 2012.

If you are concerned about any symptoms, please contact your GP or visit NHS Direct Online.

Throughout June 2012, the country and its many counties took part in celebrations to commemorate

the Queens Diamond Jubilee, Lancashire was one of them.

Everyone in Lancashire had their own way of preparing for the big day. Many groups consisting of chil-dren as well as adults made buntings, designed cards and flags. Others however baked traditionalcakes and biscuits along with gathering decorations such as flags and balloons for the occasion. Somecouncils were kind enough to also relax rules and regulations regarding street parties to celebratethis occasion making it easier for local groups and organisations to organise an absolute relaxing at-mosphere for communities to get together and celebrate this special day.

PCR presenter Faz Patel, was one of

the lucky guests who had the chanceto actually meet Her Majesty theQueen, when she visited Lancashire.Whilst visiting Accrington as part ofher Jubilee tour, The Queen made avisit to Accrington Town Hall, for acivic reception, where Faz had a lifetime opportunity to meet her alongwith many other people from all walksof life. Hundreds of people, adults, teenagers and children, all gathered

outside with banners and flags to get aglimpse of HM The Queen.

Our great presenter has been privileged to meet Her Majesty the Queen on various occasions. Formany people and families, in Lancashire, the Queens Jubilee, enabled them to come together as a fam-ily and learn about the history of our Monarch. For instance, many schools were completely over-

joyed with the whole aspect of decorating flags and decorations for street parties that were due totake place over the next couple of weeks. It was amazing to see communities and children from allwalks of life getting together and celebrating in unison.

This was the whole beauty of the Jubilee. Communitiesfrom different parts of the country, coming together andcreating diversity within cultures and traditions to cele-brate one event HM The Queens 60 years on thethrone.

As part of the celebrations, it was great to have an extraday off with the Spring Bank holiday. We here at PendleCommunity Radio hope you all enjoyed the extra few dayswhether you held a street party or maybe you just cele-

brated it while relaxing at home, it is a remarkable achieve-ment of Her Majesty the Queen to be Head of State for 60 years and we are sure you were all ex-tremely proud and honoured to be part of the celebrations of the 60th year of Her Majesty theQueen, helping make great history.

The Burnley Pupil Parliament has been established to enable local Primary School

children to have a voice relating to issues impacting on the Burnley area. Their

first campaign relates to the numerous road safety concerns that many children

face when attending and leaving school.

Despite speed restrictions, keep clear markings and other measures in place

around schools, 531 children were killed or injured on Lancashires roads last

year. This concerning figure meant it was time to act.

Many schools throughout Burnley have been working hard to raise awareness of importance of road

safety around their schools and neighbourhoods urging all members of the community to play their

    part.

The children have tackled the problems pertinent to their individual schools, in a variety of ways in or-

der to raise the profile of road safety for children in their area. Road Safety officers from County Hall

attended Parliament meetings in order to help the children embark on a Road Safety Campaign.

A Road Safety Poster Competition was recently completed by school children in Burnley. The winner

of the competition was Olivia (pictured above) from Brierfield Primary School. Olivia is the delighted

winner of a bicycle that has been very kindly donated by Halfords, Active Way, Burnley.

Olivias winning design is now being used to promote the Road Safety message across Lancashire. A

message that certainly needs addressing to ensure the safety of children in and around Lancashire.

For more information regarding the road safety campaign, please visit our website at

Pupils in Pendle have won a contest among East Lancashire

schools to find the most clued-up on environmental and roadsafety issues including the benefits of reducing the speed limit to20mph outside schools.

Barrowford School scooped the 2012 Big Green Safe Challengetrophy after coming top in an inter-school quiz. Teams of four

from schools in Burnley, Pendle and Hyndburn competed to answer questions about sustainable life-styles, how to stay safe on the roads when walking and cycling, and the benefits of the new slower20mph speed limits near schools. Each of the 15 schools which took part is committed to providingroad safety education for all their pupils and has developed a School Travel Plan which aims to en-courage parents to leave the car at home and consider walking or cycling to school.

Wendy Bell, sustainable travel officer for Lancashire County Council said: "This annual quiz is a goodway to motivate pupils to learn about road safety and how transport choices affect their local envi-ronment. All the teams did extremely well and showed a real knowledge of the issues. Schools have avital role to play in promoting sustainable travel to and from school, influencing families to slow downaround schools and to consider how alternative transport choices can be healthier and greener."

The Big Green Safe Challenge was held at Burnley Football Club. It was organised and sponsored byLancashire County Council, Lancashire Constabulary, Burnley Football Club and East Lancashire Com-munity Health Service's Accident Prevention Service.

15 November 2012 will see Lancashire residents go to the polls

to elect a Police and Crime Commissionerfor Lancashire.

Following Parliamentary approval, in September 2011, the Police and

Social Responsibility Bill received Royal Assent and became an Act. As

a result, police authorities in England and Wales will be abolished infavour of directly-elected Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs). The decision cements the biggest

change to affect policing in decades and will bring forward a new style of police governance designed

to strengthen the relationship between the police and the communities they serve.

This means that in Lancashire on 15 November 2012, the public for the first time ever, will elect a

Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) who will be accountable for how crime is tackled.

PCCs will be able to set the priorities for the police within their force area, respond to the needs

and demands of their communities more effectively, ensure that local and national priorities are suita-

bly funded by setting a budget and the local precept, and hold to account the Chief Constable for the

delivery and performance of the force. PCCs will not be expected to run the police. The role of the

PCC will be the voice of the people and to hold the police to account.

Carers Contact are here to provide support and information to Carers in the community through-

out Burnley, Pendle & Rossendale, whatever their age, circumstances or ethnic background.

    What is a Carer?

A carer is someone of any age who provides unpaid support to family or friends who could not man-

age without this help. This could be caring for a relative, partner or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or

has mental health or substance misuse problems.

Carers may even be juggling paid work with their unpaid caring responsibilities at home. The termCarer should not be confused with a Care Worker or Care Assistant, who receives payment for look-

    ing after someone.

A Carer spends a significant proportion of their life providing unpaid support to family or friends. Car-

ing situations can involve looking after someone with:

    Physical Disabilities

    Learning Disabilities

    Mental Health Problems

    Long term Chronic illness

Someone who is elderly / ill /or frail

Caring can be a very difficult, demanding and all-consuming task, no matter how close they are to the

person they care for. Caring can affect a carers health making them tired, frustrated, stressed, angry

and feeling guilty leaving them with no time for themselves.

What is a Carers Centre e.g. Carers Contact?

Carers Centres deliver a wide range of free and confidential support

services to meet the needs of Carers in their own communi-

ties. There are two Carers Centres in East Lancashire:- Carers

Contact which supports Carers throughout Burnley, Pendle &

Rossendale, and Carers Link which supports Carers throughout Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley.

Both Carers Contact and Carers link have dedicated Carer Development Workers who can support

    to all Carers. Please call 01282 704604 or 01254 387 444.
