BrightBytes survey data indicates that that technology is seamlessly functioning in our classrooms because teachers are better prepared than peers in other districts. A few key data points include: “80% of students report using the computer daily compared to the state average of 50%”, “26% of students are asked to write online at least weekly com- pared to only 13% in the state”, and “53% of teachers discuss technology use at a team or grade level meeting with colleagues at least half the time compared to only a 31% state average.” Survey data indicates that not only is a great deal of technology available for student and professional use, but access to the Internet exists in every classroom and in nearly all homes of students. Teachers and students are using that technology to significantly increase the breadth and depth of learning. • 5ELANCO School District Gives BackThis is Anthony Oberholtzer's

(PICTURED LEFT) second year inthe Work Based Learning Program atthe high school. During his time inthe program, he has earned his drivers permit, Ready2Work Certification from Lancaster CareerLink, and he has now earneda paid position at Garden Spot Village in the Dietary Departmentafter completing a three-month unpaid internship.

When students are a part of the Grassland FFA Chapter, alarge part of what they do is giving back to the community;these are just two examples. One of the major things ELANCOschapter does each year is to hold the Whole Hog Fundraiser fora local cause that is chosen by the FFA members based uponcommunity need at that time. Last year the fundraiser bene-fited The ALS Team in honor of Mr. Ed Sprecher (FUNDRAISERPICTURED BELOW). Another thing the chapter does is to hold ateacher luncheon each year as a chance for the FFA students toshow the teachers at the high school and middle school howmuch they are appreciated. Teachers who join the FFA forlunch give a donation and then the money that is donated isgiven back to the community. This year the money was donatedto Cross Connections Ministry to purchase Christmas gifts forlocal families in need.

Because the Garden Spot High School NationalHonor Society chapter considers service as one ofthe five key pillars, they have undertaken multipleservice projects in the Garden Spot communitythis school year. Members from the organization

volunteered at Garden Spot Village's Fall Festival, the GardenSpot Zombie Color Run, the Garden Spot Homecoming football game, and the Garden Spot High School volleyballbooster's concession stand. Additionally, they assembled toiletry kits for those in the community in need, fundraised forthe ELANCO Social Services Network through a high schooldress down day, and tutored for Garden Spot freshman students. In the spirit of the holidays, they also organized the Thanksgiving-themed "Grateful Gobblegrams", a candy-gram fundraiser forthe charity In Ian's Boots, decorated the high school for theirannual holiday-themed "Deck the Halls," and organized a doordecorating contest for the high school just prior to the winterbreak. For more information about National Honor Society, visithttp://blog.elanco.org/gsnhs/.

The clubmade hot cocoa deliveries during 8th periods (by dona-tion). In addition, they held abake sale. Garden Spot MiddleSchool raised over $147.00 forKIVA. Operation WarmThoughts (PICTUREDLEFT) collected warmclothing for the Districts care/shareroom. Pictured are: Kelly Trego, Tori Andrew,Sarah Shirk, and Ashley Antkowiak.

Varsity Club is made up of middle school students who areinterested in going into the health fields or helping out thecommunity. During the holiday season, students in this clubvisited Garden Spot Village to bring them Christmas cheer. As apart of that Christmas cheer, they handed out baked goodsand sang Christmas carols. Also, in Varsity club members do-nated money for a Christmas gift for a child in need as part ofthe Cross Connections Ministries Christmas Project. The club ismore than happy to be helping out those in need. At the endof the year, students in the club will be eligible for an awardscertificate for completing 10 or more service hours in thecourse of the semester. Pictured below are members of TheVarsity Club at Garden Spot Village along with their advisor,Mrs. Kathy Burke.

Families gener-ously donated gifts and wrap-ping supplies so that theadopted family could wrapthe gifts to help feel part ofthe Christmas preparations. Gifts were provided to families inneed as part of the Cross Connections Ministries ChristmasProject.

Students in Mrs. Wendy Twaddells and Mrs. Heather Snyders6th Grade classes (PICTURED BELOW) adopted families throughthe Cross Connections Ministries Christmas Project and traveledtogether to Walmart to buy presents so that other children lessfortunate could have a wonderful holiday season.

Art students and mem-bers of the Bible StudyClub, Awakening(PICTURED LEFT), createdChristmas cards with beautiful verses this year forthe residents of GardenSpot Village.

On December 22, 2014, Miss Mary Novaks 8th Gradeclasses were visited by Audra Piefer, founder of Binding Lovescarves. The students learned about human trafficking both inAmerica and worldwide and then participated in cutting up oldclothing, which Binding Love will make into upcycled scarves.Binding Love sends half of the proceeds of every scarf to sup-port refuge houses in Thailand. The students enjoyed thehands-on, real world opportunity to do something small, butpractical, in fighting human trafficking. The students, MissNovak, and Ms. Piefer are pictured below.

New Holland Elementary School has a tremendouslygiving spirit. This year, a member of the PTO suggestedthat they offer students an opportunity to give duringthe holiday season through a Giving Tree. Studentswere asked to bring in $5.00 gift cards from specific

local businesses (i.e. Yoders, Walmart, McDonalds, Sheetz, JBZimmermans, etc) to assist local families in need. The schoolcollected 70 gift cards, and these were attached to Christmasgifts that were purchased through the Cross Connection Min-istries Christmas Project. Additionally, New Holland Elementarywill again host the Art Gala Club, (SEE PG. 8 OF NEWSLETTER)whereby the participating 2nd-6th Graders will paint twopaintings [one for their families and one for an art auction onMay 8th]. The proceeds from the Art Auction will be split between the Cross Connections Ministry SummerLunch Program and the Conner M. Holland Foun-dation that assists families with pediatric cancer.Last year, the Art Auction earned $1,049.00.
