ALL FOR ONE San Francisco, CA — 5,000 sq. ft. — Tenant: Khan Academy

“I saw the angel inside the marble and set him free,” said Michelangelo, describing the process of sculpting lifelike human form from inert stone. Salman Khan’s educational philosophy similarly focuses and refines the ingrained strengths and predilections of individual students, by advocating a customized pace for each student and devoting classroom time to individualized tutoring. This proposed courtyard design celebrates and makes physical Khan Academy’s care for individualized development, while providing space for collaboration.

The studio challenged students to expand the program and function of the public park. The site is a drained and decommissioned reservoir in Russian Hill, San Francicso.I designed a public park with a dual identity — a community living room that also provides refuge during disaster recovery.

The proposed design places a skin of park spaces over bones of disaster recovery infrastructure. The skin contains turf spaces, an accessible ramp, stairs to views, and repurposes the reservoir as a flexible public plaza. Turf niches as well as the flexible plaza are sheltered from the NW winds.

Infrastructural bones include water treatment terraces, water cisterns, and water access points. A structural grid based on the grid of the reservoir’s historic roof can be clad and partioned as rooms to provide shelter after an earthquake.

YEAR 1: Three different swaths of plant textures are applied to the different facets. They are confined to the edges.

YEAR 2: Plantings fill out, blurring edges. Seeds jump the edges, colonizing bare areas.

YEAR 5: Shrubs are continue to grow over and visually soften edges. Seeds continue to colonize other areas.

YEAR 10: Individual plants are difficult to distinguish. Seeds continue to colonize available patches. Original differences in swaths of plant texture are indistinguishable.

L.A. BAROQUE Fall 2014 - Silver Lake, Los Angeles, CA - 12 acres

The studio challenged students to repurpose the Ivanhoe Reservoir, the sedimentation basin to the larger Silver Lake Reservoir. Both reservoirs will be decomissioned, and will remain water bodies for recreation. Inspired by the folded, exhuberantly complex principles of the Baroque, I re-formed the reservoir’s edge to support a cultural and ecological connection to the region’s hydrology.

1. CONTOURRe-form the edge of the reservoir to provide a folded, complex surface. The complex surface supports diverse social and biological activity.

2. EXPAND Break down the weir between Ivanhoe and Silver Lake, creating an infinity edge.

4. PERMEATEThe edge of the reservoir offers a cultural and ecological connection to the LA river.

DIRTPILE DELTA Spring 2013 - Berkeley, CA - 70 acres

The studio challenged students to design an outdoor performance space at a fill site. The site, a capped landfill on the Berkeley Waterfront, surrounds the outfall for a culverted urban creek.Inspired by river deltas, I reshaped the fill into a landform that serves as a theater for tidal action and sea level rise.

POLLUTION LEVELS NEAR MAJOR ROADS300 m 200 m 100 m

Background levels

Air pollution concentrates near freeways, profoundly affecting certain neighborhoods, yet people cannot easily perceive it. We aimed to make visible the landscape of air pollution around freeways by using a field of light poles. These poles reveal pollution concentration through color and reveal pollution dynamics by reflecting wind speed.

View a video demonstration of our prototype here: http://www.hackerscapes.com/2014/12/particle-wave-using-light-to-reveal-air-quality-and-wind/

Responsibilities: Arduino coding, 3D modeling in Rhino

PARTICLE WAVE

The height of the light bar dynamically reflects wind speed. The color turns red with increasing VOCs.

Competition design with Kyle O’Konis, Caroline Aqcuistapace, Joanna Salem Spring 2015OCCUPY THE FENCE: A BOTANICAL REVOLUTION In OCCUPY THE FENCE, a Bayview-grown botanical

revolution subdues the metal, spiked fence that currently separates the community from the sewage treatment plant. The fence folds and bows, turning into paving, seating, play equipment, and shelter. Members of the Bayview community work a proposed nursery at Site A, using composted solids and recycled water produced next door to nurture an army of plants. These plants infiltrate the surrounding street-scape, occupying parking spaces and travel lanes. They flow down connecting streets to reach out to the rest of the Bayview community. This plant army, of stalwart camphor trees, fragrant sweet box, droughty juncus, and stinking hellebore, cleans runoff, shelters people from wind-borne odors and wastewater, and creates space for the Bayview community to grow.
