Attendance: A Key to Your Student’s Success Schools are responsible for teaching your child. But schools can’t do their job if your child is absent. Learning builds day by day. A child who misses a day of school misses a day of learning. Research shows that children who are in school most of the time do better on standardized tests. Being late for school hurts a child’s learning, too. A student who is 10 minutes late every day will miss 30 hours of instruction during the year. Children can copy notes or make up an assignment, but they can never get back what’s most important: the discussions, the questions, the explanations by the teacher and the thinking that makes learning come alive. Your child’s success in school depends on having a solid educational background—one that can only be gained through regular school attendance.

Bullies A mother discovers her son hasn’t eaten lunch for some time…even though she’s sent in

lunch money every day. He’s been threatened with physical violence if he doesn’t give another boy the money. The parents of a girl are worried when she suddenly stops wanting to go to school on days when she has physical education. The other girls tease her and hide her clothes. These children—and thousands of others—are the victims of bullying. Bullying can’t be dismissed by saying, “kids will be kids.” Unless parents and schools work together, children can be hurt. Here’s what you need to know about the tough issue of bullying.

What is Bullying? Bullying is another name for harassment. It can take many forms, such as pushing,

kicking, hitting and threatening. It can include name-calling, humiliation, sarcasm and spreading rumors in person or through cyber-bullying (over the Internet). The criterion the Broward County School Board uses to identify bullying is: 1. The act is repeated, 2. There is an imbalance of power, and 3. It is purposeful. Bullying can have serious, long-term emotional effects. It is not simply “kids being kids.” Bullying affects all aspects of children’s lives, including their ability to learn.

How Do I Know if My Child’s Being Bullied? Bullies can target just about anybody for a number of reasons, but kids who are

habitually bullied tend to be those who already have lower self-esteem. Children are often reluctant to talk to parents about being bullied. They think complaining about bullying will make them look weak or invite more harassment from bullies. If you suspect your child is being bullied:

• Observe your child. Bullying victims often start avoiding school. Their grades may drop. They may withdraw from activities. The stress may cause frequent stomachaches, headaches, panic attacks or difficulty sleeping. Their self-esteem may plummet, or they may take out their frustration on others.

• Talk and listen. Encourage your child to tell you about what goes on in school or at other activities. Ask about the trip to and from school.

What If My Child is a Victim of Bullying? Some parents tell their children to strike back at bullies. That usually creates more

problems than it solves. Here are some better solutions: • Provide an emotional refuge. Hold your child when she cries. Let her know that she

is not to blame and that no one should have to put up with bullying. Keep your child involved in finding a solution, but make sure you are taking action.

• Discuss with your child how to avoid situations in which bullying often occurs. It might be possible to take a different route or avoid doing something that draws the attention of bullies.

• Give your child some ways to respond to bullies. Help your child develop ways to stand up for herself without losing her temper. Your child might: Try to ignore the bully, turn and walk away, try not to show that she is angry or upset.

• Let the school know. Keep a record of the times your child is bullied. Save harassing emails, text messages, etc. Make sure the school officials know about these incidents at once.

Together we can make a difference when bullying is identified properly and dealt with through education and parental support.

4/20/11 April 20, 2011 Re: Parent/Community Involvement Task Force Dear Parents: On March 1, 2011, the School Board approved the establishment of a Parent/Community Involvement Task Force to energize and increase parent/community involvement in Broward County Public Schools. The primary goal of this Task Force is to identify practical ways for citizens to have meaningful input and participation in public education in Broward County. The composition of the Task Force represents a cross section of District and community stakeholders. In addition to School Board Member representatives, existing parent advisory groups, and employee labor groups, the District is seeking the participation of four community and parent representatives to provide new and innovative ideas on improving parent/community involvement. The District will be accepting applications for these positions in an effort to broaden parent representation. Parents interested in serving in this important capacity are encouraged to visit www.broward.k12.fl.us/pctf for more information and to complete a brief online application. The website can also be accessed from the District’s home page. The District is hopeful the application process will identify participants not currently active in Broward County Public Schools, or active at the school level, in order to garner new perspectives on how the District can develop a more effective participation/communication model with all stakeholders. The application window will close on May 6, 2011. All applicants will be notified as to the outcome of the application process. The Parent/Community Involvement Task Force intends to hold its first meeting the week of May 16 – 20, 2011. Thank you to all of our parents for their interest in Broward County Public Schools and Panther Run Elementary School. Sincerely, Principal
