El
Rodeo
2011 will get off to a great start this Friday,
January 7, when LA5 welcomes Buzz
McCoy. Mr. McCoy will address the issue of
whether business success has to be synony-
mous with a lack of morality. A former
partner at Morgan Stanley, Buzz McCoy
insists that ethical business leadership is
both possible and desirable.
Seeking inspiration from an eclectic range of sources such
as Dante, Kant, and Peter Drucker, and drawing from his
own career as a successful investment banker, the author
examines how business leaders can flourish in a corporate
environment without shedding personal values or compro-
mising integrity.
Living Into Leadership: A Journey in Ethics is based on
the author’s actual life experiences, personal ethical dilem-
mas, and concerns. The central question is how to pursue
an engaged business career while living a balanced life and
continuing to grow as an integrated person.
Be sure to attend this Friday at the California Club and hear
this very timely topic addressed from the perspective of a
proven professional who combines competence with char-
acter, success being the result.

President’s Message
Happy New Year LA5 Rotarians! Most of us make New Years resolutions to enrich our personal development, health, relationships, job/career, finances and
family. Accomplishing personal resolutions makes our quality of life better; and, if we are more satisfied and confident with
ourselves we can make a positive influence on the people who depend on us.
I would like you all to consider adding a resolution to bring in at least one prospective new member to LA5. The success and
relevance of Rotary depends on each of us.
If each of us will bring in at least one prospective new member, we will be making LA5 Bigger-Better-Bolder. Besides enriching
your own life and the life of a new member by sharing Rotary, you will be making a positive influence in our Club that, in turn,
will continue to make our Club a vital force for good in our community and internationally.
Thanks for every thing you do for Rotary!
Next week’s meeting is on Thursday,
January 13, Manhattan Beach Marriott
R. I. President Ray Klinginsmith
LA5 will join with District 5280 and others next Thursday,
January 13 to participate in the Rotary International Presi-
dential Luncheon. Our gathering will be held at the Manhat-
tan Beach Marriott (1400 Parkview Ave, Manhattan Beach, CA
90266). Reservations are on a "first come" basis, and should
be made as quickly as possible. There are about 450 seats, and
it will definitely be a sellout event.
Our club can have our picture taken with President Ray
Klinginsmith. We will honor our Ambassadorial Scholars, Ex-
change Students, Rotaract, and Interact Clubs. We will also
hear an inspirational message about "Cowboy Logic" from
President Ray.
Club pictures will begin at 11:00 AM, and the program starts at
noon. Tickets are $50.00 each and must be paid in advance.
This is a wonderful opportunity for us to see the International
Perspective of Rotary as well as the grass roots commitment of
Rotarians in their local communities. This will be a day of Ro-
tary pride and enthusiasm, a healthy dosage of fun, and in a
very down to earth style, where we as Rotarians are and where
we are headed.
RSVP today! Contact the LA5 Rotary office at 213-
624-8601 or [email protected] and tell Jennifer
how many seats you'd like to reserve.
This event takes the place of our regular Friday meeting.
There will not be a meeting on
Friday January 14.

Our office just received word that Wally Erickson died September 10,
2010.
He was an Active Member of LA5 for many years, and a devoted volun-
teer in the Salvation Army. He was a respected member of the Army’s
Red Shield Advisory Council.
Wally is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty, and their two daughters
and their families.
Let's show the world
Rotary Cares!
Each year, Rotary Clubs around the world participate in
hands-on projects that all members can participate in to
help their local community. In 2011, LA5 has adopted
the Blind Childrens Center for just such an endeavor.
On Saturday, January 15, we will paint the classrooms
for children with special needs. From 8:00 AM – 3:00
PM we will give a much-needed facelift to this very ac-
tive structure so that a a new classroom will be waiting
for the children upon their return from winter break.
Please join us, and bring any personal equipment that
might be needed: work gloves, safety glasses, ladders
and telescoping paint rollers. Harris & Ruth Painting
Contracting has kindly donated the paint. Other sup-
plies will be provided to complete the project.
Registration will start at 8:00 AM. Coffee, bagels, Rotary
Cares tee shirts and your assignment will be waiting for
you. Lunch will be served at noon.
This is not a skilled labor event. Everybody can do
something. Make plans to attend, and bring friends and
family members along with you. Rotary Cares commu-
nity service projects make our world a better place.
RSVP by sending an email to Marjorie Heller at
[email protected] or Gus Oppermann at
The Blind Childrens Center is located at 4120 Marathon
Street, Los Angeles, CA 90029.
