Jeff Cole named Lake County Manager
TAVARES — Lake County Commissioners today officially
tapped Jeff Cole to serve as the county’s next manager.
“He really does get our collective vision. I think he understands some of our
individual goals,” said Vice Chairman Leslie Campione, who made the motion to of-
fer Cole the position on April 18. “His past experience, his education, his demeanor,
his presence, his ability to adapt – I think that’s a critical part of this job – his appreci-
ation for and attention to service, I have seen that firsthand.”
Cole joined Lake County in January 2016 as the director of Public Resources,
where he oversaw management of the Parks & Trails Division, the Lake County Li-
brary System, the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agriculture Sciences
(UF/IFAS) Extension Services and the Lake County Fairgrounds and Events Center.
Cole served as chief of staff for the St. Johns River Water Management District
between 2011 and 2015, where he was responsible for intergovernmental affairs, co-
ordination with local and state officials and media outreach. He began working for
the agency in 1994, following four years with Brevard County.
He holds a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University and a master’s
degree from the University of Central Florida.
“I am honored to serve as county manager for Lake County, which is a unique
community with so much to offer residents, business owners and visitors,” said Cole.
“I appreciate the board’s support and trust in me to lead county government for-
ward.”
Cole will begin his new role on June 3, upon the retirement of County Manager
David Heath.

Abel Biri Named Chief Executive Officer for Florida Hospital Waterman
Biri returns to Florida Hospital Waterman, where he once served as chief operating officer. TAVARES, Fla. (May 5, 2017) – Abel Biri has accepted the position of Chief Executive Officer for Florida Hospital Waterman, effective May 30, 2017. He replaces, and will report to, David Ottati, who was recently named president/CEO for Adventist Health System’s Central Florida Division – North Region, which en-compasses Volusia County, Flagler County and Lake County, where Florida Hospital Waterman is located.
“Abel has demonstrated strong leadership qualities, sound acumen and dedication to Extending the Healing
Ministry of Christ during his more than 20 years with our organization. This, combined with his previous ex-ecutive leadership experience at Florida Hospital Waterman, during which he helped foster the hospital’s
growth and solidify its standing in the market, gives me confidence that the hospital will be well-positioned for advancement under his leadership,” said Terry Shaw, president/CEO for Adventist Health System.
Biri, who joined the organization in 1996, currently serves as vice president and chief operating officer for
Florida Hospital Orlando, where he is responsible for the performance of core clinical

Lake County issues countywide burn ban
TAVARES — The Lake County Public Safety Department has issued a countywide burn ban due to extremely dry weather conditions increasing the probability of wildfires. In accordance with County Code 10.5-75, the ban prohibits all outdoor burning that has not been specifically per-mitted by the Florida Division of Forestry. This includes burning yard waste or building recreation-al fires. Lake County's Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) indicates 31 percent of the county is above 500, with the index exceeding 500 for more than 3 weeks. The mandatory burn ban will remain in effect until further notice. Any person responsible for unlawful burning faces a minimum fine of $150 per incident, and could bear costs associated with extinguishing the fires. Lake County firefighters are currently battling a 700-acre wildfire in the northern area of the county along State Road 44 in Eustis. Structural protection strike teams, consisting of personnel from Lake County Fire Rescue, the cities of Eustis, Tavares, Mount Dora, Leesburg, Minneola, Groveland, Clermont and The Villages, have committed resources for immediate deployment should a wildfire threaten property. “Partnerships are essential in a community such as Lake County to protect all citizens and property owners from dangerous wildfires,” said Lake County Fire Rescue Chief Jim Dickerson. “The strike teams were crucial to saving 20 homes over the weekend.”
Under the burn ban, outdoor grilling is permitted, however residents should keep a constant watch for any stray sparks or embers. ATVs, dirt bikes, and even lawn mowers can pose a risk for accidental ignition. An effective way to reduce the possibility of wildfires near homes is to clear un-derbrush or debris blown down during storms, as dry plants and vegetation create fuel for wild-fires. Residents are urged to comply fully with the burn ban until weather conditions improve and the ban can be safely lifted. Residents are also asked to immediately report any signs of smoke or fire by calling 911. The career firefighters of Lake County Fire Rescue protect county residents and visitors in an
area covering approximately 1,200 square miles, with nearly 70,000 residences and up to 2,000 com-
mercial properties. For up-to-date news on Lake County Fire Rescue, visit, www.facebook.com/

CRA grant for exterior painting
We have been approved for a CRA grant to help pay for painting the building. Thank You Lisa Durant for all
the legwork and phone calls that made this happen.
Building Committee
A reminder, we are now in our own building at 24214 SR 46 in Sorrento. The building had it’s roof cleaned,
it’s exterior power washed and painted. We no longer look like a construction site!
The landscaping is under way thanks to Bob Austin and volunteers from our chamber membership, it was a
blank pallet just waiting for an experts direction. Our sod has taken root adding a nice green backdrop for
the gardens and shrubs. The property was treated for ants and bugs by Aaron Pest Control making the yard
comfortable and safe for our June third Breakfast and Market event. Signage, lighting, accent items, all to
make our new property an asset to the community are in our near future.

Lake County receives budget award for fifth
consecutive year
TAVARES — Lake County has accepted the Government Finance Officers Association’s (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its Annual Budget for the fifth consecutive year.
The award represents a significant achievement and reflects the commitment of the govern-ing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting. In order to receive the budget award, the agency has to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. Lake County was assessed on how well the county’s budget serves as a policy docu-ment, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications device. Budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories and the 14 mandatory criteria within those categories.
“Lake County’s Budget Division is honored to again be recognized for our quality budgeting practices and presentation,” said Steve Koontz, Lake County Assistant County Manager and Direc-tor of Fiscal and Administrative Services.
The GFOA established the Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program in 1984 to encourage and assist state and local governments to prepare budget documents of the highest qual-ity; reflecting both the guidelines established by the National Advisory Council on State and Local Budgeting and the GFOA’s best practices on budgeting. The Government Finance Officers Associa-tion is a nonprofit professional association serving nearly 18,000 government finance professionals throughout North America. The GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program is the only national awards program in governmental budgeting.
Lake County’s budget documents are available online at www.lakecountyfl.gov/departments/fiscal_and_administrative_services/budget. For more information, contact the Budg-et Division at 352-343-9452.

The New York Café, located in the
Sorrento Hills Village in Sorrento, is
owned by Douglas and Amy Berrios.
At the age of 8 years, Douglas was raised
by his grandmother, Gilmas Marina
Guay, in Guatemala. As a very young
man he watched and learned about all the
wonderful food she made. His grandma
was well known and loved and was a big
influence on Douglas.
When he got older, he moved to Brooklyn,
New York and continued to learn more
diverse cooking skills. In 2011 he moved to
Lake County Florida to begin a new chapter
of life.
In 2016 Douglas and Amy opened this
brand new business, offering such
favorites as their Philly Cheese Steak
and the Rueben. Their menu includes
many other delightful GMO free,
gluten-free, and no preservative items.
Sadly, in 2016, just before opening the restaurant, his loving grandma
passed away, never getting to see what he had accomplished.
Their goals are to be the Best, not the Biggest. They want to prepare
Healthy, Quality products and give good service to the community.
The Café’s employees, Drean, Joran, Susan, Elizabeth, Maddie, and
Nikki, along with Douglas and Amy, all look forward to serving you.
Stop by soon!
