Ethnic  Parties’  Success             In  2015  General  Elections  18  out  of  53  competing  ethnic  parties  won.  Altogether  140  candidates  from  ethnic  parties  were  elected.    In  this  article,  an  ethnic  party  is  defined  as  a  political  party  in  which  the  majority  of  its  leadership  and  membership  identify  themselves  as  belonging  to  an  ethnic  group.           The  data  used  in  this  brief  article  was  obtained  from  Union  Election  Commission  and  Enlightened  Myanmar  Research  Foundation  transcribed  into  excel  format  both  in  Burmese  and  English  for  the  purpose  of  analysis.

1.   Zomi  Congress  for  Democracy  2.   Wa  National  Unity  Party  3.   Wa  Democratic  Party  4.   Unity  and  Democracy  Party  of  Kachin  State  (UDPKS)  5.   Tai-­‐Leng  Nationalities  Development  Party  (T.N.D.P)  6.   Ta-­‐Arng  Palaung  National  Party  7.   Shan  Nationalities  League  for  Democracy  (SNLD)  8.   Shan  Nationalities  Democratic  Party  (SNDP)  9.   Pao  National  Organisation  (PNO)  10.    Mon  National  Party  11.   Lisu  National  Development  Party  (L.N.D.P)  12.   La  Hu  National  Development  Party  13.   Kokang  Democracy  and  Unity  Party  14.   Kayin  People  Party  15.   Kachin  State  Democracy  Party  16.   Arakan  National  Party  17.   All  Mon  Regions  Democracy  Party  18.   Akha  National  Development  Party    Analysis     Ethnic  parties  were  most  successful  in  Rakhine  where  they  won  by  nearly  70  per  cent.  Similarly,  they  performed  significantly  well  in  Shan  State  where  they  won  over  40  per  cent.  Similarly,  Kachin,  Chin,  Kayin  and  Mon  States  also  had  some  ethnic  parties  winning  although  the  proportion  was  very  low  in  Kayin.  Kayah,  on  the  other  hand,  is  the  only  ethnic  state  without  any  ethnic  party  winning.       The  trend  is  the  quite  the  opposite  when  it  comes  to  the  regions.  Only  Yangon  and  Sagaing  had  a  few  winning  candidates  from  the  ethnic  parties.
