EDITORS LETTER

Welcome to issue one of EL ESTILO* magazine. The name El Estilo is Spanish for style and am myself half Spanish. This is the first online design, fashion and lifestyle magazine to launch in London, something we are very proud of :)

In this issue we take a look at automotive design, Hotel Puerta America Madrid, Shanghai Tang, Sienna Miller wearing Piaget, Wimbledon Fashion Week, Alain Ducasse’s 3 Michelin star restaurant and the Tesla electric supercar.

So what will feature in future issues? The most innovative designs, the most luxury fashion and the best ways to live in style.

“But who is this Mark McGough?” I hear you cry. Well, I am a magazine designer with a degree in Graphic Design, who set up Nano magazine

while studying at The UCA at Epsom. Nano was an A6 art & design student showcase magazine. It gained a large following but was not sustainable, largely due to the costs involved in printing thousands of copies.

When the iPad was launched I had a brain wave. Now that the market is ready for it, why not create an online magazine? So, after a good few years of networking it was time to relaunch Nano under a different name, a different size but with the same vision. To produce a stylish publication that showcases the best professional and student work out there, with a bit of luxury lifestyle thrown in for good measure. This is the test issue, so feel free to give feedback.

Hotel Puerta America is a new radical design hotel in Madrid. A different

architect/interior designer of international standing has been commissioned to create each floor of the hotel, giving free rein to their creativity in the development of the rooms and floor as a whole. The list includes Foster and Partners, Zaha Hadid, Chipperfield, Jean Nouvel, Arata Isozaki, Ron Arad and John

Pawson. Full list on page 11.The hotel has 13 floors with 30 rooms, 1200 sqm per floor.

PLASMA STUDIO - THEIR WORDSHotels are usually characterized by linear bands of repetitive units with resulting anonymous undifferentiated corridors that contrast with a hotels’ ambition to treat each guest as an individual. In response to this we identified the common circulation

zones as a journey that can supply a multitude of radical new experiences, evoke tension and orientation at the same time.

In conjunction with the choice of stainless steel as ambiant accelerator and ability to be applied to floors, walls and ceilings, We employed the existing rationalist repetitive rhythm of partition walls, service ducts and entrance doors as a

sectional framework from which a differentiation of the corridor skin was devised. In other words the perpendicular partition walls were pulled along their axis, while the entrance doors produced resistance. In this way the corridor oscillates rhytmically between minimum and maximum width while the floor slopes upwards and downwards to expand this rhythm into an alluring multi-sensorial experience.

In addition to this radical geometric formation we introduced a colour gradient as an LED light seam that gradually changes. In this way each section of the corridor has its own unique character. Its colour is continued into the adjacent rooms so that guests develop an intuitive sense of their place within the whole floor.

This conscious intensification of experience within the circulation culminates in the knot, the area where both corridor wings fold into each other to create a vortex, forcing the ceiling to dip down and form a cocoon; a bracket in space and time from where projections of Madrid’s daily routine can be watched flickering whilst waiting for the lift.

The rooms have been designed as a zone that links the artificial intensity of the trembling stainless steel tunnel with the exterior behind the plate glass window. Reverberances of the corridor in colour, material and geometry are

employed not to destabilize but to organize, define the usual functions and accommodate comfort and wellbeing.

The room’s entrance area is shaped as a funnel towards the view through the window. Many visual relationships are projected onto the subtle geometry of the ceiling folds.

ZAHA HADID - THEIR WORDSZaha Hadid’s innovative designs for the Hotel Puerta America Hotel were unveiled at a press conference in Madrid on January 18th 2005.

Hadid’s response to the clichéd hotel bedroom is to develop a new dialogue between the complex and continuous nature of merging forms and textures. This seamless fluidity represents a new language of domestic architecture – created by new developments in digital design and enhanced manufacturing capabilities.

This fusion of elements is Hadid’s master-stroke and illustrates an ingenious progression of her earlier work in pushing the boundaries of spatial concepts.

As president of the Silken Group explained, “The Hotel Puerta America is a dream come true. A project where acclaimed architects and designers have conveyed their dream to us. It’s a homage to the world of Architecture, Design and to Freedom.”

At the dawn of the 21st century, all the world´s eyes are riveted on China as the

ancient nation embarks on a path of unrivalled economic growth, unmatched modernization and phenomenal projects on a world-beating scale.

While the entire West hurls itself towards China, anxious that it will miss the consumerist train as it finally pulls out of the platform, Shanghai Tang departs on a road leading the world towards a new design movement. Mr. Raphael le Masne de Chermont, Executive Chairman of Shanghai Tang since September 2001, is the driving force behind the brand’s global expansion and positioning as the first Chinese luxury lifestyle brand. Shanghai Tang, the arbiter of modern Chinese chic, is a full lifestyle concept comprising of fashion, accessories, home, furnishings, and tailoring services “inspired by Chinese.” The brand currently has 40 boutiques globally and flagship locations in Shanghai, New York, Paris, London, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

Mr. le Masne de Chermont is a veteran of Asia and has over twenty-two years of experience in the luxury goods sector. Prior to Shanghai Tang, he held executive-level positions at brands within the Richemont Luxury Group: Piaget, Baume & Mercier, Officine Panerai, and Cartier, where he first joined its London operations in January 1988.

For the final image of the campaign celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Piaget

Possession, photographer Raymond Meier has captured Sienna Miller at her most sophisticated and glamorous best. In a dramatic transformation from the two previous campaign images, stylist Elisa Santisi, make-up artist Gucci Westman and hair stylist Esther Langham, have given Sienna the ultimate red carpet-ready look. It is immediately apparent why the camera loves her so much and why she has suchunmistakable star power.

Set against a rich, deep grey background, Sienna strikes a confident pose, exuding a sense of pure luxury. She wears the perfect little black dress and her hair is neatly pulled back to showcase Piaget’s white gold and diamond double hoop Possession earrings. The plunging V neckline beautifully frames Piaget’s newest

Possession pendant, presented here in white gold and full diamond pave. On her middle finger, Sienna wears a classic Piaget Possession band with five rows of diamonds. Perhaps the most the most striking though, is the Possession white gold and diamond cuff on her arm. Dramatic and sculptural it offers an artistic and thoroughly modern interpretation of Possession’s signature circle within a circle motif.

This third image provides a fitting finale to the Possession 20th Anniversary Celebration campaign and beautifully showcases the range of one of Piaget’s most versatile collections. This is the first official photo shoot for El Estilo*. Helena is a great photographer,

probably one of the best I have ever worked with in London. Projects we have previously collaborated on include Miss Wimbledon 2009, Wimbledon Fashion Week 2009 and 2010, several restaurants, organisations, fashion designers and many others. She also has a great amount of experience fashion photography. For that reason I have asked her to join the El Estilo* team. She also has her own studio, which came in very handy for this issue, and is a talented re-toucher.

I came across Yolanda during Wimbledon Fashion Week and was impressed by her professionalism, amount of experience (10 years) and

stunning proportions. She is actually with Elite Model Management in Hong Kong but while in the UK does freelance modelling.

Keturah J Grumble is another person I met through Wimbledon Fashion Week. When she showcased her collection at the event I was blown away. She had made so many outfits and they were all fabulous. “my inspiration came from my fondness of the art deco movement of the early 20th century” says Keturah. “The designs were, care free but elegant and the belief that the beauty of the design should be functional rather than simply tacked on just made so much sense.”

Ayesha Mubarak provided the make-up for the shoot. We have a bit of history; she’s done the make-up for various Miss Wimbledon shoots and the 2010 event, and I have learnt to trust her. She has also been invited to join the team.

On Saturday 1st June Mr & Miss Wimbledon 2010 was held at Tapanco, one

of SW19’s best known restaurants. Brayoni Cerveaux picked up the Miss Wimbledon title, who performed a lively dance routine combining different genres of dance.

“I think it was a fun and memorable night. The feedback from the audience was very positive and there was a lot of audience participation,” says event creator Mark McGough.

Judge Carly Stratton, winner of reality TV show Shipwrecked in 2008, said: “I really enjoyed all the acts. I was looking for confidence most of all rather than them taking it too seriously. It is important that they enjoy what they do.”

Tony Lloyd, 7th degree black belt and local martial arts instructor at Fighting Fit was awarded the Mr Wimbledon and Ayme Brown was the people’s choice.

Wimbledon is a very special place and is the first choice for many

successful business men, celebrities and government officials when looking for a home. This is down to its great transport facilities, proximity to Central London, beautiful location and unique identity. It is home to Europes first Buddhist Temple,

Europes largest health and fitness club, Europes most advanced IMAX, London’s last greyhound stadium, London’s last horse stables, New Wimbledon Theatre (where Prince Charles celebrated his 60th birthday), The Polka Theatre (London’s only specialist childrens theatre), a large number of beautiful parks, exciting bars and restaurants and of course

the All England Lawn Tennis Club. Wimbledon has also been selected to host the 2012 Olympics.

Wimbledon Fashion Week 2010 was recently held in Cento, a tredy new restaurant and cocktail bar recently featured in OK! magazine. The event showcases up & coming designers and provides the designers with models,

“If you have just graduated Wimbledon Fashion Week is a great place to start.” says Mark McGough, event crator. “If you are willing to take advantage of it, you’d be surprised how much power the name can really give you, especially if you are from abroad.”

The featured designers were Mi Kyoung Kim from South Korea, Ilayda Altuntas from Turkey,

Keturah J Grumble from the UK, Arnab Sengupta from India, Melis Binay from Turkey and Holly Bee from the UK. Hair and make-up was provided by Ayesha Mubarak, additional management was provided by Mehreen Beg and our photography sponsor was Memory Gate. Helena Tepli also took photo’s for the event. Our media partner was Darling magazine, a local publication that goes out to Wimbledon Village, the most affluent area in Wimbledon.

In this issue we will take a look at 3 top French, Spanish and Japanese restaurants in London,

starting with Alain Ducasse’s three Michelin starred restaurant.

Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester has created a bespoke dining experience, giving those with a designer taste the rare opportunity to add their own personal touch to a Michelin starred dinner. The three Michelin starred restaurant has enhanced private

dining by launching a bespoke dining experience. Guests can create their very own ‘menu from the menu’ with their own choice of dishes chosen from the restaurant’s à la carte menu. The new package not only allows guests to select from the haute cuisine menu, but also to tailor their table setting by choosing from the selection of china, silverware, table ornaments and glassware selected from designer houses, famous for the finest creations in tableware.

Guests booking the ‘bespoke experience’ are able to arrange the most exclusive and glamorous celebrations at the restaurant’s stunning Table Lumière, one of the most prestigious dining tables in London offering the ultimate dining atmosphere. site to date. The critically acclaimed Nobu Berkeley ST is one of London’s most fashionable restaurants and bars and has also been the venue for some of the capitals most high profile parties. offers some innovative new dishes, not on the menu at Nobu London. Iconic dishes such as the ‘Yellowtail Sashimi with Jalapeno’, ‘Rock Shrimp Tempura’, ‘Field Greens with Matsuhisa Dressing’, ‘Black Cod with Miso’ and the acclaimed selection of fantastically fresh and high quality sashimi and sashimi are of course all present. Some of the exciting new dishes available at Nobu Berkeley ST include the ‘Nobu Tacos’, filled with tuna and salmon or scallop and lobster and served with a spicy guacamole, the ‘Crispy Pork belly with Spicy Miso’ and the ‘Whole Lemon Sole Kara Age’, flavoured with a unique blend of soy, ginger and garlic.

burning oven, able to imbue dishes with a unique flavour. Dishes from the oven include a ‘Whole Roast Poussin with Jalapeno, Ponzu Butter and Yuzu Lemon Garlic’, the ‘Cabbage Steak with Truffles’ and ‘Wagyu Rump Tataki with Dried White Miso’. There is also a 12 seater sushi bar, always open to walk-ins and ideal for solitary diners where patrons are able to witness Nobu Berkeley ST’s talented sushi and sashimi chefs work.

Another interesting aspect of the restaurant is its interactive Hibachi table, able to seat twelve. Perfect for a celebration the Hibachi table incorporates three gas-heated grills upon which the table’s specially trained staff will grill cuts of meat and fish and vegetables marinated in

various trademark sauces, a spectacle that is both entertaining and delicious.There are a number of set lunches on offer at Nobu Berkeley ST, ideal for a quick business lunch, designed to be completed in 45 minutes if necessary. The ‘Regular Bento Box’ is priced at £28 and contains many of the ‘greatest hits’ that the Nobu cuisine has become famous for, including the legendary ‘Black Cod’. Other set lunch menus, all of which are served with Miso soup, salad and tempura include ‘Chicken with Anti-Cucho Sauce’ and ‘Beef with Teriyaki Sauce’, priced from £25. The Donburi selection (fish, meat or vegetables served on rice) is extensive and is priced from £16.50 for the ‘Spicy Vegetable Donburi’. Designed by celebrated interior designer David Collins and spread over two floors, Nobu Berkeley ST houses a suitably glamorous 200 cover restaurant and a stylish, yet relaxed lounge bar. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and the bar is licenced until late. With last orders for food at 11:45pm Monday to Wednesday and 00:45am Thursday to Saturday the restaurant is ideal for late dinners post-theatre or before a long night out. With its accolades and awards, continued culinary innovation and enormous popularity amongst the well-known in the fields of music, fashion, television, film and business, Nobu Berkeley ST richly deserves its position as one of London’s most successful and sought after restaurants.

The Spanish restaurant Iberica is at the very centre of Spanish cuisine and culture in the UK. Situated in Great Portland Street in London,

this destination venue not only offers 2 separate dining restaurants showcasing the very best of Spanish cuisine, but also a delicatessen selling produce and wines, some of which are unique to the British market.

The main ground floor restaurant is dominated by a 15-metre L-shaped bar, surrounded by numerous side tables. In this relaxed and informal atmosphere, simple cold dishes such as cheese and charcuterie, sit alongside Mediterranean pan con tomate, shellfish, salads, sausages, tortillas and more substantial main courses, which offer both regional and new Spanish cuisine. Upstairs on the mezzanine level the more formal, fine dining Caleya restaurant offers a quieter more intimate ambiance. The seasonally changing menu includes example dishes such as Layered seared scallops with potato, Spanish summer truffle and fresh pea followed by Grilled fillet of Turbot with cauliflower puree, orange caramel and cocoa oil and finished with Mousse of turron “Jijona” with light chocolate sponge and mandarine sorbet.

During the day, like its downstairs counterpart, Caleya is flooded with natural daylight from the building’s ceiling to floor windows, but in the evening, the clever use of soft lighting provokes a more sophisticated and romantic space.

The menus for both are shaped by a highly experienced team, directed by Michelin-starred Executive Chef, Nacho Manzano from Asturias.

Manzano is renowned at his family restaurant in the Asturian mountains, Casa Marcial, for his speciality fish dishes and for his modern interpretations of more traditional Spanish dishes. He has travelled extensively giving masterclasses in Spanish cuisine throughout the world and represents Asturias at major international events.

His belief in offering a lighter more modern version of many Spanish dishes, follows on from the creation of a menu at Caleya at Iberica, that not only provides a healthy

more nutritional base, but also still respects the traditions of his homeland and its artisan producers. Perfectly complimenting Manzano, Madrid born Head Chef Santiago Guerrero manages the kitchens on a daily basis. Before moving to England to work with the Roux brothers at the famous Waterside Inn in Bray and then as Head Chef at the acclaimed London restaurant L’Albufera, his career and training had seen him work at some of Spain’s top Michelin restaurants including El Celler de Can Roca in Girona and Hacienda Benazuza in Seville.
