SOLUTIONS FOR DRAMATIC SKIN REJUVENATIONTreatment solutions for skin rejuvenation exist with TCA ChemicalPeels, Fractional Therapy (Fraxel) and Carbon Dioxide (CO2)Laser Treatments.

Tricholoracetic Acid (TCA) is a chemical solution. It is a strong acidmade by chlorinating acetic acid and is widely used as a chemical skinpeel. This procedure aims to improve the skin’s appearance byremoving the outer layer of damaged skin to reveal the underlyinglayer, which is newer and smoother in texture. TCA chemical peels aremore effective than most other peels in removing superficial skin. It isgenerally referred to as a “medium depth” peel and reduces finesurface wrinkles, lightens pigmentation discoloration, and smoothesoverall skin texture. Medium peels are generally performed in-officeand require approximately 30-45 minutes for the appointment time.TCA peels will cause a burning sensation that will last about two to tenminutes. A topical numbing solution may be applied to help youtolerate the burning sensation during the peeling agent application.Once all areas have been neutralized, your skin will return to itsnormal color within an hour. Within a few days, your superficial layersof skin will turn dark, become stiff, and leathery. The skin will then

crack and peel which will lead to flaking. Once your old skin hassloughed which takes about one week your new skin will be brighterand smoother. TCA chemical peels provide an intermediate level ofimprovement at a reasonable cost. Patients will have a light pink colorfor up to 6 weeks requiring makeup. TCA peel results are similar to aseries of Fraxel Treatments.

FractionalTherapy (Fraxel) provides excellent skin rejuvenation with aseries of treatments while experiencing almost no downtime. Fraxel®

Lasers use thousands of tiny beams of light to establish microscopictreatment zones that treat only a predetermined percentage of skin whileleaving normal surrounding skin to help with the healing process. TheFraxel® treatment allows the skin to heal much faster than if the entiresurface of the skin were treated at once. Using microscopic treatmentzones also allows Fraxel® Lasers to penetrate more deeply into thedermis than traditional lasers. This deeper penetration aids instimulating collagen production helping to make the skin appear moreyouthful and reversing the effects of aging. Patients are light pink incolor for several days, but makeup can be applied almost immediately.Over a series of treatments, the Fraxel® rejuvenates the entire skinsurface, lightening brown spots and fading fine lines. Patients reporttheir skin to be smoother, softer, and tighter. The Fraxel® laser results ina more radiant and even skin tone. This laser treatment is an excellentway to rejuvenate your skin with minimal downtime.

rejuvenation. Dr. Hamilton has always been an advocate for the CO2 laser and both published andpresented on its use stating “The CO2 laser has and continues to be for me the most effective way tosafely provide dramatic skin rejuvenation.” The CO2 laser removes the top layers of skin to rid the skinof sun damage. The laser actually heats deeper tissue which provides a tightening effect. This heatcombined with resurfacing also helps to remove fine lines and wrinkles while stimulating collagenproduction. The resurfaced skin both looks and feels like new skin achieving a more uniform color,refined texture and healthy radiant glow.

Using a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser device, the damaged top layer of skin is instantly vaporized, thusimproving the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles, scars, and uneven pigmentation. Laserresurfacing may be performed on the whole face or just on targeted areas. A laser resurfacing proceduremay take a few minutes for smaller treatment areas or up to an hour for an entire face. Local anesthesiaand sedation is commonly used, although general anesthesia may be advised for more extensiveresurfacing. After the laser treatment, a bandage may be applied to the treatment area which can remainin place for three days. Mild swelling may occur as well as some redness which can last for several weeks.After about ten days, a crusted layer will have formed on the treatment area that will fade. It will takeabout two weeks before work and other normal activities can be resumed and approximately four to sixweeks before resuming more strenuous activities. Sun exposure will need to be limited for six monthsto a year. The healing time is more extensive than other milder treatments. The proven results of CO2lasers make a remarkable difference in creating a more softened, youthful appearance.

Very recently we had a patient, Angie K., come into our office who was unhappy with her look oftiredness. Angie lives in Bloomington, IN and is in her mid 40’s. She is a registered nurse and formerpharmaceutical sales representative. Due to the economic conditions she along with over 1,000 otheremployees with her company lost her job. She decided to make a career move and become anaesthetician. It was during this time she desired to see what could be done to improve her appearance.After a thorough consultation with Dr. Hamilton it was decided this would best be achieved by a lowerblepharoplasty, endoscopic forehead lift and full-face C02 laser. The surgery for lower blepharoplastyand endoscopic forehead lift were imperative to restore the fresh look around her eyes.
