Chado  Tea  Room    Tea  seems  to  be  a  recurring  theme  for  Gamma  Iota  this  year.    Eleven  sisters  and  guests  enjoyed  a  tea  tasting  at  the  Chado  Tea  Room  in  Pasadena  on  Saturday,  January  25.    They  learned  about  different  varieties  of  tea  and  also  enjoyed  tea  sandwiches  and  pastries.    Thanks  to  Rhonda  Byer  for  suggesting  this  and  making  the  arrangements.                  Biltmore  Hotel  Tour  and  Tea    Sunday,  November  17  was  the  date  for  another  great  tour  with  the  Los  Angeles  Conservancy.    We  met  our  docent  in  Pershing  Square  and  learned  about  the  history  of  the  hotel  and  the  outdoor  architecture.    Then  we  went  indoors  where  we  visit  various  rooms  and  learned  about  the  craftsmanship  and  artistry  displayed  throughout  the  hotel.    Following  the  tour,  most  of  us  stayed  for  tea  in  the  entry  courtyard.    Brenda  Morton,  Area  XI  Director,  joined  us  for  the  tour  and  tea.    Thanks  to  Stephanie  Wexler  for  making  the  arrangements.

Strategic  Planning  Reveals  Chapter  Strengths      At  the  September  meeting,  we  asked  members  to  each  do  a  quickwrite  on  the  strengths  of  the  chapter.    These  were  done  individually,  without  discussion.    Rhonda  Byer  offered  to  analyze  the  responses.    She  reported  on  the  results  at  the  December  meeting,  and  her  summary  is  written  below:

The top five strengths of the chapter that the members identified in order were: 1. Programs, events, and activities. The members thought they are well-planned, have variety, include new things, and are meaningful. 2. Friendliness 3. Participation at events and meetings and above the chapter level. 4. Leadership. The members appreciate the leadership development as well as good leadership. 5. Volunteerism. The responses specifically identified helping working teachers. In the surveys the chapter was recognized for good leadership, good attendance, good number of members, and for being well-organized. Adjectives used to describe our chapter's members were friendly, cohesive, united, dedicated, caring, supportive, helpful, diverse backgrounds, outgoing, camaraderie, committed, enthusiastic, and talented. The verbs used to delineate what members do were volunteer, help teachers in classes, participate, and network. Community service was mentioned with specific references to Little Books, Jared Boxes, and scholarships.  We need to use these ideas as talking points for recruitment. At our March meeting, we’ll gather ideas about Chapter challenges using the same methodology. Thank you, Rhonda, for a thorough, insightful and provocative analysis.

President’s  Message

Time  to  Plan  for  Chi  State  Convention  2014  Dear  sisters,     In  order  to  prepare  a  required  report,  I  recently  used  SurveyMonkey  to  find  that  60  to  70%  of  you  read  the  two  publications  from  DKG  International.    I  wish  I  had  thought  to  ask  how  many  read  the  Chi  State  News,  which  comes  four  times  a  year  from  our  state  organization.    In  any  case,  be  sure  to  read  and  save  the  current  Winter  2014  issue,  because  it  has  all  the  information  about  the  Chi  State  Convention  in  Santa  Clara  this  spring.     As  I’ve  written  before,  our  Convention  differs  from  other  educational  conferences  because  it’s  friendly,  intimate  and  offers  speakers  and  breakout  sessions  of  great  interest  to  retirees  as  well  as  working  educators.    This  year’s  program  looks  outstanding.    Also,  Convention  is  a  real  bargain.    Early  bird  registration  and  three  banquet  meals  are  offered  for  a  total  of  only  $219!    Convention  is  being  held  at  the  Hyatt  Regency  Santa  Clara,  and  using  our  DKG  rate  rooms  are  available  for  $99  a  night  (plus  tax),  an  outstanding  value  for  a  Four  Diamond  Hyatt  Regency.    Santa  Clara  is  easily  reached  via  Southwest  Airlines  to  San  Jose,  (current  round  trip  fares  starting  at  $138)  or  by  driving  up  the  101.  http://chistateca.org/chistateconvention2014.html     I’m  disappointed  that  due  to  my  upcoming  trip  to  Israel,  I  will  miss  Convention  this  year.    However,  this  is  good  news  for  someone  who  would  like  to  be  our  chapter’s  official  delegate,  since  we  have  reserved  $600  in  our  budget  for  Convention  expenses.    Of  this,  around  $500  should  be  available  for  travel  and  registration  reimbursement.         Please  ask  me  if  you  have  any  questions  about  Convention.    I  hope  to  have  a  good  representation  from  our  chapter.     I’ll  see  most  of  you  at  the  Area  XI  Conference  next  Saturday.
