Dear Friends, During those years spent in the seminary in New Orleans, I can still vividly re-member Mardi Gras Tuesday as if it happened yesterday; festivities in the streets, beads filling the roads, locals and visitors alike dancing to music and screaming to be heard by those riding the floats hoping to get a special memento or two. Those went on all day. And then…. by 6 or 7 p.m., with the snap of a finger or a blink of an eye, the streets became empty, devoid of people. There was ghostly silence. There was not a single trace of Mardi Gras beads on the roads or electric wires. People had gone home to pre-pare for the next biggest event in their lives, which would arrive in less than 12 hours – ASH WEDNESDAY. Just like that, moods change, festivities transformed into penitence, beads traded for ashes. Lent has begun. Lent has arrived. Ash Wednesday is our second New Year’s Day, where the resolutions we tried to consistently practice get a second chance. Our most often go-to as we begin our Lenten exercises is the place of “giving up” where we decide to give up something(s) in order to learn to grow spiritually by rec-ognizing that in the hunger/yearning brought about by the absence of a source of pleasure in our lives – we learn that the true source of our joy and happiness is God alone. We also give up something, usually a certain pleasurable meal, to note that we walk with Jesus in his suffering and with our sisters and brothers in theirs as well. But this Wednesday, I would like to ask all of you to consider a different Lenten ex-ercise or penitential practice. I call this –

The #ASHTag Challenge

It’s pretty simple. Instead of (OR in addition to) what you usually do, I challenge you to TAG someone among your family, or relatives, or friends, or co-workers, and invite them to come to Sunday Mass…and not only come to Mass, but consistently come every Sunday. This way, not only do you obtain graces for yourself by this spir-itual exercise but you also help someone else obtain graces.

INSIDE THE 815...

Page 4: EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME13) Write a kind text or email to a mother that you know who needs encouragement. 14) Write a kind text or email to a parent or grandparent. 15) Pray

Secondly, I also challenge you to TAG yourself and keep yourself accountable through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. There is probably no greater penitential or spiritual exercise that can be had this Lent than by truly allowing the Sacrifice of Christ to bear fruits in our hearts. We have a lot of opportunities to hear confession this Lent as we have increased our confession schedules. Lastly, I challenge you to TAG yourself to developing a certain devotion either through one or more of the spiritual or corporal works of mercy. The Lenten season is always a great opportunity to develop our spiritual lives, to grow in our spiritual lives, AND to be consistent in our spiritual lives. I pray for all of you that truly the exercises you will enter into this Lent will be blessed with consistency so that they will remain with you all throughout the year.

********** The DISCIPLE MAKER INDEX is still up online and paper copies are still available. We have exactly two weeks left to participate in this resource. The deadline is March 15.

********** The Office will be closed MONDAY and TUESDAY for the Mardi Gras holidays and will reopen on Wednesday.

********** Ash Wednesday Mass Schedule: 7:00 a.m., 9:30 a.m. (Nursing Home), 12:05 p.m., 6:00 p.m. *For a complete list of our schedule for Lent, please see the Special Lenten Schedule on page 2 of this bulletin.
