Mary MagdaleneFeast Day ~ July 22

“The Apostle To The Apostles”Patron Saint of the Slandered?!

Except for the mother of Jesus, few women are more honored

in the Bible than Mary Magdalene. Yet she could well be thepatron of the slandered, since there has been a persistent legendin the Church that she is the unnamed sinful woman whoanointed the feet of Jesus in Luke 7:36-50.

Leonard Foley, O.F.M., Saint of the Day

In 1969, the Vatican officially corrected the traditional

misconception of Mary Magdalene as a prostitute. Thismisconception was set in motion by Pope St. Gregory the Great(540-604) who was voicing an earlier tradition confusing Maryof Magdala with the penitent who washed the feet of Jesuswith her tears and dried them with her hair.

Randy Pozos, Theologika

Mary Magdalene has been much maligned. In the “old” days, she was thought to be an awful sinner and a penitent. That

symbolism is good in order to give us hope, but it does not fit the gospel information. The Fathers of the Church in the FourthCentury confused the stories of Mary Magdalene with the story of the woman-sinner who washed the feet of Jesus and dried themwith her hair. All that is really said of Mary Magdalene is that Jesus cast seven devils out of her. This means nothing more thanthat Jesus cured her of a terrible disease! If we wish to be faithful to the Gospel, we shall emphasize Mary Magdalene as the woman who had faith when all others failed. She the one who was first at the tomb. She was the first witness and messenger of the resurrection of Jesus. She cared enoughto risk much when the apostles were hiding out for fear. She is a model of loyalty and faith. Let us pray for that same zeal andperseverance. Msgr. William Carr

Mary Magdalene seems to have an identify crisis.

First, some biblical commentaries consider her the “sinful woman” who bathed the feet of Jesus with her tears, wiped them withher hair, and anointed them with ointment (Luke 7:36-50).Second, she is also identified as Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, who “took a liter of costly perfumed oil made fromgenuine aromatic nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and dried them with her hair” (John 12:1-8).Third, there is the Mary Magdalene of the thrilling account of the risen Jesus’ appearance to her (John 20,1-18).Which Mary is the real Mary Magdalene? The Church’s official liturgical calendar settles the dilemma:“Today’s celebration (July 22) honors only Mary Magdalene to whom the Lord first appeared after his resurrection, notthe sister of Lazarus and Martha and not the sinner of Luke 7:36-50.”

Lectionary For Mass, Liturgical Press

Mary Magdalene was one of the many who assisted Jesus and the Twelve out of their means. (Luke 8:1-3)

She was one of those who stood by the cross of Jesus with his mother. (John 19:25)Of all the “official” witnesses that might have been chosen to first see the Resurrected Christ, in John’s Gospel, she was the oneto whom that privilege was given. And she was the one chosen by Jesus to first announce the Resurrection:Jesus said to Mary: “Go to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God andyour God!’ Mary Magdalene went to the disciples. “I have seen the Lord!” she announced. Then she reported to themwhat he had said to her. (John 20:17-18)

Thus, around the 9 century, Mary Magdalene was given the title: “The Apostle To The Apostles”.th

God Is LoveThere is no one who cannot discover and find a place

in God’s love. From it flows our Christian hope. There exists no one so bad, so brought down, sobroken down, that he cannot find a place in that love.

Pope John Paul II

God loves us not because we have merited it or are

worthy of it; rather, God’s love for us is freely given andunearned, surpassing all we could ever hope for orimagine.

Pope John Paul II

The love of Christ is more powerful than sin and death.

St. Paul explains that Christ came to forgive sin and thathis love is greater than any sin, stronger than all mypersonal sins or those of anyone else. This is the faith ofthe Church. This is the Good News of God’s love thatthe Church proclaims throughout history and that Iproclaim to you today: God loves you with aneverlasting love. He loves you in Christ Jesus, his Son.

Pope John Paul II

God loves you all, without distinction, without limit.

He loves those of you who are elderly, who feel theburden of the years. He loves those of you who are sick, those of you who are suffering from AIDS and fromAIDS-related diseases. He loves the relatives and friendsof the sick and those who care for them. He loves us allwith an unconditional and everlasting love.

Pope John Paul II

The relationship between God and those who believe in

him is one of warmth and love, not cold formality. Therelationship is not cold like that between an emperor andhis subjects, but is one of deep affection like that whichdevelops between two friends, between spouses, betweenparents and children.

Pope John Paul II

God’s faithful love will never lessen and will never

abandon us to ourselves, or to the darkness of nonsense, blind fate, emptiness or death.

Pope John Paul II

Who can cancel

the work of God himself, which the Son has carried outin union with the Father? Who can change the fact thatwe are redeemed? In spite of all the instability ofhuman destiny and the weakness of the human will andheart, the Church orders us to contemplate the might, the irreversible power of the Redemption, which livesin the heart and hands and feet of the Good Shepherd.

Pope John Paul II

God’s love has many aspects. In particular, God loves

us as our Father... God’s love for us as our Father is astrong and faithful love, a love that is full of mercy... Itis the reality of God’s love for us as our Father thatexplains why Jesus told us when we pray to addressGod as “Abba, Father.” “Does a woman forget her baby at the breast, or fail tocherish the child of her womb?” (Isaiah 49:15)It is also true to say that God’s love for us is like that ofa mother... God’s love is tender and merciful, patientand full of understanding. In the Scriptures and also inthe living memory of the Church, the love of God is indeed depicted and has been experienced as thecompassionate love of a mother.Jesus himself expressed a compassionate [motherly]love when he wept over Jerusalem, and when he said:“O Jerusalem... How often would I have gathered yourchildren as a mother hen gathers her brood under herwings.”

Pope John Paul II

The love of God is so great that it goes beyond the

limits of human language, beyond the grasp of artisticexpression, beyond human understanding. And yet it isconcretely embodied in God’s Son, Jesus Christ, and inhis Body, the Church.

Pope John Paul II

God is love. O n t h i ssolid rockthe entirefaith of theChurch isbased. Pope Benedict XVI

Rediscover the joy of the faith, the joy of being

personally loved by God, who gave his son Jesus forour salvation. To believe consists above all inentrusting oneself to the God who knows us andpersonally loves us....Despite our weaknesses and our sins, God loves us....

Pope Benedict XVI

God’s closeness is not one of judgment that incites

terror, but one of support and liberation. God is alwayswith us. Even in the darkest nights of our lives, he doesnot abandon us. Even at the most difficult times of ourlives, he is present. Therefore, we Christians can trustthat we are never alone. The goodness of God neverabandons us.

Pope Benedict XVI

Like a small child still totally dependent on his mother,

but old enough to recognize his need, Christians mustacknowledge their dependence on God. The image ofthe mother and child is a sign of the tender and maternallove of God.

Pope Benedict XVI

God does not hide behind clouds of impenetrable

mystery... He has shown himself, he talks to us and iswith us; he lives with us and guides us in our lives.

Pope Benedict XVI

“Where two or three are gathered in my name, I am

there among them” is a reflection of the reality of God’slove, present with believers.

Pope Benedict XVI

The secret of my ministry is

in that crucifix you seeopposite my bed. It’s thereso that I can see it in my firstwaking moment and beforegoing to sleep. Look at it. See it as I see it. Those openarms have been the programof my pontificate: They saythat Christ died for all... forall. No one is excludedfrom his love, from hisforgiveness. Pope John XXIII

Each and every one of us is an

object of God’s undying love. We know that God’s eyes arealways upon us, even whenthings seem very bleak. God is,indeed, our Father. Even more,God is our Mother – notwanting to hurt us, but only todo good for us, all of us.

Pope John Paul I

God loves each of us as if

there were only one of us tolove.

St. Augustine

Love could not be better

commended to you than by thefact that it is called GOD.

St. Augustine

God our Father, we find it

difficult to come to you, because our knowledge of youis imperfect. In our ignorance we have imagined you tobe our enemy; we have wrongly thought that you takepleasure in punishing our sins; and we have foolishlyconceived you to be a tyrant over human life. But sinceJesus came among us, he has shown that you are loving, that you are on our side, and that our fear of you wasgroundless. So we come to you asking you to forgiveour past ignorance, and wanting to know more and moreof you and your forgiving love, through Jesus Christ ourLord. St. Augustine

Consider that no

one — whetherfriend or brother, father or mother, lover or spouse —loves you morethan your God.

St. Alphonsus Liguori

God is not only a Supreme

Being of omnipotence, butLove itself. He is love whichdid not stop loving us evenwhen we sinned and turnedaway from Him. He is Lovewhich cannot stop loving us.Archbishop Thomas J. Rodi

God loves his people more than a bridegroom his

beloved. His love will be victorious over even theworst infidelities and will extend to his most preciousgift: “God so loved the world that he gave his onlySon.” Catechism of the Catholic Church

I know not how I am so loved.

St. Teresa of Avila

The Lord says: “Come then, come back to me, and

come to know me as a father; for see, I return good forevil, love for injuries, and for deep wounds a deeperlove.” St. Peter Chrysologus

There are only a couple of things that are at the core of

the Christian message. It may be only one thing: Godis love. All other truths are only various ways ofarticulating that fundamental truth. The Bottom Line Catechism

God hugs you. You are encircled by the arms of the

mystery of God. Hildegarde of Bingen

The Lord takes delight in his people. Psalm 149

The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a mighty savior.

He will rejoice over you with gladness, and renew you inhis love. He will sing and dance joyfully because ofyou, as one sings at festivals. Zephaniah 3:11

Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness

for the child of her womb? Even should she forget, Iwill never forget you. Isaiah 49:15

Like a young man marrying a virgin, your builder will

marry you. And as the bridegroom rejoices in his bride,so will your God rejoice in you. Isaiah 62:5

I am certain that neither death nor life, neither angels

nor principalities, neither the present nor the future, norpowers, neither height nor depth nor any other creature, will be able to separate us from the love of God thatcomes to us in Christ Jesus, our Lord.

St. Paul, Romans 8:38-39

God Beholds You....He calls you by your name.He sees you and understands you as He made you.He knows what is in you, all your peculiar feelings

and thoughts, your disposition and likings, yourstrength and your weakness.

He views you in your day of rejoicing and in your day of sorrow. He sympathizes in your hopes and your temptations. He interests Himself in all your anxieties and

remembrances, all the risings and fallings ofyour spirit...

He encompasses you round and bears you in His arms...

He notes your very countenance, whether smiling or in tears...He looks tenderly upon you...He hears your voice, the beating of your heart and your

very breathing. You do not love yourself better than He loves you. St. John Henry Cardinal Newman
