SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: The Transfiguration of the Lord Tuesday: St. Sixtus II and Companions;

St. Cajetan Wednesday: St. Dominic Thursday: St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross Friday: St. Lawrence Saturday: St. Clare

Question of the Week:

Fr. Gerard’s Corner The Israelites did not initially recognize the manna that God gave them to eat. “What is this?” they asked when seeing the flakes that resembled frost (Exodus 16:15). (In fact, the Hebrew, man hû, is translated as “What is it?”) They failed to recognize the Lord’s hand in answering their need. They failed even to recognize that this was food. It seems difficult to believe, considering how hungry they were. But we can be blind to a solution that doesn’t look like we expected. Moreover, we can fail to see God’s grace behind the blessings we receive.

Lest anyone misunderstand the source of heavenly blessings, Jesus declares that it was his Father, not Moses, who gave the Israelites the bread from heaven. The bread—this basic form of sustenance—came from God. It is a short stretch, then, to identify himself as “that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world” (John 6:33). This extraordinary form of sustenance, coming from God, is also bread, but special bread: the Bread of Life.

Paul tells the Christian community at Ephesus how fundamental a change they must make to their identity. They are to “put away the old self . . . and . . . put on the new self,” making a total conversion (Ephesians 4:22–24). This is what the acceptance of Christ entails. This is the difference between working for “food that perishes” and “food that endures for eternal life” (John 6:27). Like the Ephesians, we are called to change our very selves. Fr. Gerard

St Lawrence is one of the most widely venerated saints of the Roman Catholic Church. Legendary details of his death were known to Damasus, Prudentius, St Ambrose, and St Augustine. His liturgical celebration on August 10th has the rank of feast in the General Roman Calendar. He is the patron saint of librarians, archivists, comedians, cooks and tanners.

Saint Dominic, also known as Dominic of Osma and Dominic of Caleruega, was a Castilian priest and founder of the Dominican Order. Dominic is the patron saint of astronomers.

St Clare founded the Order of Poor Ladies (Poor Clares) at San Damiano, and led it for 40 years. Clare loved music and well-composed sermons. She was humble, merciful, charming, optimistic, chivalrous, and every day she meditated on the Passion of Jesus. Clare is the patron saint of eye disorders and television.

GOD’S WORK We are so busy! Most of us have more than one job to do, and we never seem to have enough time. We are workers, volunteers, parents, friends, and most of us are more than one thing at a time. But which of these is the work of God?

We seldom view our ordinary work as being the work of God. We may think that we have to be ministers or priests, missionaries or charity workers, engaged full-time in works formally identified as being “God’s work.” But everything we do with a faithful heart and with love for others is God’s work. We each have our own role to fill in the world, and many gifts are necessary. We cannot always see the direct connection of our daily work to the plan of God. But we trust and we believe that God leads us to do what is needed, where it is needed. What is “God’s work?” “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent” (John 6:29). Thur, Aug 16, 7pm: "Existence Beyond The Grave" -

Karlo Broussard, Staff Apologist and Speaker, Catholic Answers Karlo explains why we have good reasons from both philosophy and scientific research to believe that there is life after death. He also explains why existence beyond the grave matters to all of us. Come hear Karlo explore this critically important topic.

Thur, Sept 20, 7pm: "Whatever Happened to the Modern World" - Cy Kellet, Host, Catholic Answers Live The modern era was supposed to be all about progress and reason, but it has gotten itself into serious trouble. Though we have gained many things, humanity has suffered many losses, most especially the loss of Christ. As a result, the modern world often seems unfit for real people. Knowing how this happened can help us recover a modern world fit for people.

Thur, Oct 11, 7pm: "Christopher Columbus" -Christopher Check, President, Catholic Answers It has become fashionable in recent years to cast Christopher Columbus as a cruel conqueror rather than a great explorer. In 1992, much of the world celebrated the 500th anniversary of his voyage of discovery, yet the citizens of Berkeley, California, staged an opera called “Get Lost (Again) Columbus.” What is the truth about this controversial historical figure? Come listen to the compelling tale of this man of extraordinary daring who brought Christendom to the New World.

Spend a Weekend with God on Retreat at

Prince of Peace Abbey August 3-5

The Center for Ignatian Spirituality is offering a retreat on how to live contemplatively in our busy lives. Talks, silence, prayer, quiet time, Mass, confession, and spiritual direction will provide new tools to become a contemplative in action! Check-in on Friday is at 5:15 PM, but late arrivals are okay. For more info, email Fr. John Auther, SJ, at [email protected]

In the Gospel from John, Jesus advises us, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.” By calling Himself the Bread of Life, Jesus is telling us by what He says, how He acts, and in fact Who He is that He is the Word of God made flesh.

God reveals to us the Word alive in the most complete way possible, through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We are to hear the Word and know Who Jesus is; we are to accept that Word into our minds and hearts — into our spirit — and we are to let that Word begin to change us.

That change is represented by knowing what God wants us to do. Today’s Holy Scriptures make that clear. We must pray that we respond and do be good stewards of our time, talent, and treasure so that we can do the work God wants us to do. In the Second Reading, Paul reminds us that we need to undergo a conversion — in effect put on a new self. Our entire lives need to be devoted to change, so that we renew ourselves from the inside and live a stewardship way of life according to God’s ways.

Charles Spurgeon, an English minister in the 1800s once wrote, “Conversion is a turning onto the right road. The next thing to do is to walk on it.” That is our trial. Once we experience conversion, we must follow through by doing what the Lord wishes us to do.

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary. We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643. The Eudists currently operate in 15 countries, most of which are in the developing world. Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as well as formation to ministry in the

training of diocesan priests and lay ministers. Our motto is “To Serve Christ and His Church.” For more information visit: http://www.eudistsusa.org

Mission Statement: To love God, proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ, and serve all God's people.

The Transfiguration by Rubens

What is the Transfiguration? According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Transfiguration is: “The mysterious event in which Jesus, speaking with Moses and Elijah on the mountain, was transformed in appearance – in the sight of Peter, James, and John – as a moment of disclosure of His divine glory” (CCC, Glossary, pp.

901-902; 554).

When do celebrations of Our Lord’s Transfiguration appear in the Church’s calendar? The Feast of the Transfiguration is celebrated on August 6th of every year and it is featured during the Lenten season, on the Second Sunday of Lent.

Who witnessed the Transfiguration? There were three witnesses to the Transfiguration: St. Peter, St. James, and James’ brother, St. John.

What changes occurred in Our Lord? Our Lord’s appearance changed! The three Gospel narratives tell us that the Lord Jesus’ “face shone like the sun,” (Matthew 17:2); and “the appearance of His countenance was altered” (Luke 9:29). Each narrative tells us that Our Lord’s clothing changed: “His garments became white as light” (Matthew 17:2); “glistening, intensely white, as no fuller on earth could bleach them” (Mark 9:3); “and His raiment became dazzling white” (Luke 9:29).
