From the Pastor’s Desk - A Spiritual Reflection O Great Spirit!

Dear Parishioners,

Let me walk in beauty, and make my eyes ever be-hold the red and purple sunset. Make my hands respect the things you have made and my ears sharp to hear your voice. Make me wise so that I may understand the things you have taught my people. Let me learn the lessons you have hidden in every leaf and rock. I seek strength not to be greater than my brother, but to fight my greatest enemy --- myself. Make me always ready to come to you with clean hands and straight eyes. Reflection: This Native American prayer invites us, as do fundamental teachings in all religions, to wake up to the mystery of God by perceiving the insignificance as well as the significance of our lives. On the one hand, we are to view our lives against the backdrop of the cosmic dimensions of the universe. In the post-Hubble era, says Dennis Hamm, some astronomers and astrophysicists have postulated, by considering the age of the chemical elements, of star clusters, and of the oldest white dwarf stars (collapsed stars), that the universe is be-tween 12 and 20 billion years old and that it may be around for 200 trillion more years! This calculation is framed by theories of the Big Bang and the Big Crunch. What a speck human history is! How vast the uni-verse is! When we focus on the human race, as the wise man says, “one generation goes, and another generation comes, the earth abides forev-er” (Ecclesiastes 1:4). Within the vastness of human history itself, our individual lives are not even a drop in the ocean. Most of us may not even know the names of our great grandparents and their par-ents --- lost forever in the misty past. When we stand on the seashore gazing at the vast ocean or on

a mountain surrounded by other mountains under the vast blue sky or on a cloudless starry night, we cannot but be struck by the majesty of the universe and the smallness of our individual life. Our lives are mere footprints on the sands forever being washed away by the waves. On the other hand, our individual lives are precious and significant because of the love we have for one another. We forge relationships from the moment of our conception and strive to find meaning in our place in the universe. We are proud of our identity and develop a strong sense of belonging to family, community, organizations, and social groups, through which we realize our potential and find fulfillment. Most importantly, we are precious in the eyes of our God in Jesus Christ, who has re-membered each one of us in a unique way and brought us into existence, giving us a purpose and role so that we can understand the significance of our existence in the vastness of the universe and the panorama of time. In other words, even though we are insignificant and lost in the grandeur of time, we are made for eternity. We came from God and are destined toward God. Eternity is written into our very genes. The universe is sanctified by the mystery of the incarnation and the glory of the resurrection. We are small and weak, but God has made us for glory and grandeur. We are God’s own children, bearing His image and likeness.

Action: Because of your insignificance, set aside your illusion that you are the center of the uni-verse. In your relationship with God, people, and the universe, strive to bring them into the center of your life; become selfless and self-effacing. Let humility become your way of life. Because of your significance, however, act in ways so that your life is worthwhile. Rise to the calling God has given you. Wake up to the reality and mystery of God. Spend your time in love and service. You can make a difference; you can help the situation; you can light a candle to dispel darkness. You can help change the world for the better by changing your-self. With God you can re-create the world. With Jesus you can co-redeem the world. Are you ready? Are you adventurous? Are you generous?

Adult and Youth Faith Formation Registration Open

The RCIA (Rite of Christian Ini-tiation of Adults) program is now accepting registrations for the 2015-16 year. Those 16 years of age or older who would

like to become Catholic (having never been bap-tized) or who would like to complete the Sacraments of Initiation (having been baptized into a Christian faith, but not received Communion and/or been con-firmed) are invited to call the Pastoral Center offices at 650-588-1455 and leave their contact information. A member of the RCIA team will follow up with details about the program, which begins in Septem-ber. Registration forms are available in the Pastoral Center.

New and continuing registra-tion is now being accepted for the 2015-16 Faith Formation program. Registration forms may be found on the parish

website www.stveronicassf.com under the “Faith Formation” tab, or may be requested by calling the Faith Formation office at 650-588-1455 ext. 305. Even if your child will be coming back to Faith For-mation in the fall, a 2015-16 registration form is re-quired. Registration forms are also available in Spanish through the Pastoral Center. Please complete your registration process as soon as possible as class sizes are limited. Classes will begin in September, but the summer is needed to order books and supplies and set up the classes. A reminder that preparation for the sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation are each two-year programs, beginning no earlier than first grade for Communion and no earlier than 8th grade for Confirmation. Reflecting on the Word

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Human beings are prone to grumbling. In the book of Exodus, the Israelites, having been freed from slavery in Egypt and having watched God destroy their enemies in the Red Sea, complain that they are in a wilderness with no food to eat. They grumble that God should have left them as slaves back in Egypt, where at least they were provided with three square meals a day. It never seems to occur to them that the God who was powerful enough to free them from slavery might also be powerful enough to provide them with food. God replies to their grumbling with characteristic generosity, raining down bread from heaven to sustain them. In the Gospel of John, Jesus’ listeners do not grum-ble (though they will when the story continues in next week’s Gospel), but they do not understand him any bet-ter than the Israelites understood God in the wilderness. Like the Israelites, they are focused on material bread and demand to be given a sign before they will have faith. They will believe in Jesus, but only on their own terms. In doing this they overlook “the food that endures for eternal life” that is already there with them. What will make us stop grumbling and placing de-mands on God? It almost seems hard-wired into us. In Ephesians, Paul instructs his readers to be transformed by the renewing of their minds and to put on a new self. But what does this mean in the concrete? What would be the first signs of such a renewal? Perhaps it would mean doing a little less grumbling and a little more trusting. Small, daily acts of gratitude are the foundation of our life in Christ.

♦ What things do I complain about on a regular basis? Does my grumbling keep me from having the proper attitude of gratefulness toward God and others?

♦ How has God provided for me in my life? What “manna” do I wake up to on a regular basis?

Baptisms are generally celebrated each month on the 1st and 3rd Saturday in English and the 2nd Saturday in Spanish. Please call

the Parish Office for times and to register.

Preparation classes for parents and godparents are held

Capital Campaign Update
