    Screening1

Screening is done to see whether a

    project requires environmental

    clearance as per the statutory

    notifications.

    Screening Criteriaare based upon:

    Scales of investment

    Type of development

    Location of development.

    Scoping2

Scoping is a process of detailing the

    terms of reference of EIA.

    Done by the consultant in

    consultation with the project

proponent and guidance, if need be,

    ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT: THE PROCESS

    Introduction Process of EIANon-compliance:

    Negative ImpactsCase Study

    Assessment of Alternatives: For

    every project, possible alternatives

    must be identified and

    environmental attributes compared

    and ranked, covering both project

    location and technology.

    Delineation of Mitigating Measures:

    Mitigation plan supplemented with

an EMP. Details of monitoring to be

    included in the EMP.

EIA Report: It should provide clear

    information to the decision maker

    on difference scenarios with

    alternatives. Uncertainties should be

    clearly reflected in the report.

Impact prediction is a way of

    mapping the environmental

    consequences of the significant

aspects of the project and its

    alternatives.

    Environmental impact can never be

    predicted with absolute certainty .

Consider all possible factors and take

    all possible precautions for reducing

    the degree of uncertainty.

    ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT: THE PROCESS

    Introduction Process of EIANon-compliance:

    Negative ImpactsCase Study

    Decision making process involves

    consultation between the project

    proponent (assisted by a consultant)

    and the impact assessment authority

(assisted by an expert group if

    necessary)

    The decision on environmental

clearance is arrived at through a

    number of steps including evaluation

    of EIA and EMP.

    ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT: THE PROCESS

    Introduction Process of EIANon-compliance:

    Negative ImpactsCase Study

EIA is intended to prevent or minimize potentially adverse environmental i

enhance the overall quality of the project.

The negative consequences which follow the non-compliance of EIA are:

Higher Project cost in long term.

    Decreased project acceptance.

Reduced project design and reduced efficiencies across the organizat

Wastage of technology and return on technology investments.

Poor information , data protection and security.

Inadequate coordination among internal and external stakeholders.

Bottom Line : From human beings to fauna & flora , soil ,water & air, c

landscape , Material assets , cultural heritage and finally the interaction b

    all is at stake.
