IntroductionThe Kawneer AA®600 Series has beendesigned to give specifiers a totally integratedsystem.

It has been developed to set new standardsin window and door systems through itsunrivalled flexibility of design and outstandingweather and thermal performance.

The Kawneer AA®600 Series is a highperformance, totally integrated and fully co-ordinated window and door system. A polyamide thermal break offers dual colourand enhanced thermal performance.

The range can suite with Kawneer’s curtainwalling and framing products and is suitablefor installation in low or high rise buildingsfor commercial and domestic new build orrefurbishment projects.

Aluminium framing construction incorporatesextruded polyamide thermal break profileswhich mechanically interlock with inner andouter aluminium extrusions in a bi-tubularconfiguration to produce fixed frames oropening frames to suit performance and costrequirements.

With the use of extruded gasket profiles, this system achieves its weather sealingperformance by means of drained andventilated rebates on a pressure equaliseddesign principle. The system has beendesigned with no visible gasket line to enhancethe overall appearance.

The Architects Design Group (ADG)met a host of challenging criteria forthe conversion of a former, Grade IIlisted Barclays bank into 27 luxuryapartments, utilising Kawneer’s curtainwall system, AA®605 swing doors andAA®601 casement windows.

Cowlin Construction added two storeysof contemporary glass and aluminiumto the original, 1950’s, three-storeyYork stone building, originally designedwith five floors.

The Kawneer systems, which form theperimeter of the fourth and fifth floorsand a link bridge between the sides aswell as balconies and half-mooncolumn casing between the curtainwalling, have helped the glazingelements achieve an overall U-value of2.2W/m2K.

Lionel Peterson, projects director forADG, said “We specified Kawneer forthis project because we required aquality product that met the budgetand conformed to the weatheringratings that would be experienced withthe site in an extremely exposedsituation, located only a short distancefrom Plymouth Hoe”.

“It played a major part in thetransformation of the existingbuilding, bringing it well into the 21st century.”

Case Study - Brunel UniversityYRM Architects’ concept design fornew teaching accommodation atBrunel University certainly met theclient’s brief for a gateway buildingonto the campus, utilising Kawneer’sPicture Frame (PF), face bead systemand AA®600 Series Windows.

Work on the £10million project bymain contractor Laing O’Rourke tookalmost two years but the end resultwas a building for the teaching ofhealth and social care that is a stunninglandmark at the eastern gateway to thecampus in west London.

The 4,500m2 of floor space is spreadover four floors and a central atriumthat are naturally ventilated to reduceenergy consumption. This is achievedthrough a ribbon of Kawneer’s AA®600high-performance windows at the rear,Kawneer rooflights in the atrium, and5% mechanically-operated openablewindows within the Kawneer PF curtainwalling on the front elevation.

YRM said: “We specified Kawneer’ssystems after full research of theavailable façade systems and theirssatisfied the requirement of the design.The glazed elements provide a cleanand rational framework for the façade.The Kawneer materials provided acontrast between the solid and theopen surfaces of the façade sought byour design as concept architects.”

AA®602 Pivot Window

IntroductionThe Kawneer AA®602 Pivot window is based on the tried and tested design principles of theKawneer AA®600 series window and doorsystem. The pivot window is available inhorizontal or vertical applications which makesit a suitable window for most instances.

The AA®602 pivot is especially user friendly withthe chamfered vent for ease of operation; thiswith the unique gasketed pivot that remainswatertight without the use of sealants gives theend user peace of mind.

The addition of an automatic restrictor of 10 or15 degrees makes operation and safety in useparamount. This, coupled with the ventilationat the top and bottom of the window for fullcirculation of air makes the pivot the first choicefor hospitals and offices. The vertical pivotcomplies with HTM 55/BS 8213 which makes itsuitable for hospitals, schools and residentialapartments.

private housing with 100% car parking.

orientation and requirements of

the harbour masterplan.

the build because the choice of glazing

system played such a large part in the

appearance of the elevations as well as

satisfying the technical requirements of our

performance specification.

“The curtain walling gives the elevations the

look we wanted but also creates internal

spaces that are light filled for the residents.”

Case Study - Glasgow Harbour

The regeneration of Glasgow Harbour was

helped by Kawneer curtain walling by giving

the architects an aesthetic product that can

withstand the extreme environment and the

apartment residents light-filled homes with

stunning views over the River Clyde.

Kawneer’s curtain walling, windows and

doors were used for Bryant Homes’

£45million residential development - part of

Glasgow Harbour’s riverside transformation

of approximately 120 acres of derelict land

into mixed use, creating a vibrant place to

live and work as part of Glasgow’s West End.

The new-build project comprised five blocks

of apartments and townhouses ranging from

six to 20 storeys to provide a total of 321

units, with Taylor Woodrow Construction as

main contractor.

Face capped and bull nose curtain walling,

together with slope glazing, AA®603 tilturn

windows and AA®603 tilt slide doors were

performance-specified by award-winning

architects for the project Cooper Cromar.

The bull nose curtain walling has been used

on glazing boxes that act as landmark feature

lanterns on the top three storeys of the two

tallest towers that feign a lighthouse affect

on the 9,500m2 Bryant site – a former granary

on the north bank of the Clyde.

Cooper Cromar wanted a stunning

contemporary look for the individually

designed apartments that feature extensive

areas of glazing - not just to give the

elevations the look they wanted but also to

create space that was light filled for the

residents.

Nevertheless, the glazing system had to be

robust to stand up to the extreme exposure

and weather conditions for which a wind

study analysis was commissioned to establish

the performance criteria.

Case Study - Woodhouse Mill

The sympathetic refurbishment of formerly

derelict Woodhouse Mill, a six-storey Grade

II listed building situated on the banks of

the Rochdale canal on the outskirts of

Todmorden, features Kawneer’s GT70

windows as replacements for the mill’s

original steel windows.

Built in 1832, Woodhouse Mill was on the

Listed Buildings At Risk register until local

businessman, Charles Moran of Langdale

Estates Ltd, had the vision to save the building

and turn it into a stylish residential

development.

The refurbishment process involved

extensive consultation with planners and

bodies such as English Heritage and the

Victorian Society, with the intention to retain

as many of the mill’s original features as

possible.

Commenting on the refurbishment of the

fenestration, Graham Newton of Ramsden

Barrett Architects says, “The Kawneer GT70

window was chosen because of its slim

sightlines, which makes it a suitable choice

for refurbishment projects like Woodhouse

Mill, where there is a requirement to retain

the traditional elegance of the original steel

windows”.

IntroductionThe Kawneer GT70 Slimline RenovationWindow is an elegant aluminium fenestrationsolution designed specifically to replicate theappearance of steel windows. Suitable forinstallation in new build or refurbishmentprojects, the GT70 window combines theoptimum technical performance expected oftoday’s aluminium windows, with the finesightlines characteristic of original steelwindows. These slender sightlines areenhanced further by optional bevelleddesigned feature caps adding a uniquesculptured effect to the external surface ofthe building.

ConstructionFraming construction incorporates fill anddebridge thermal break with resin. Allframes have mechanically jointed andadhesive bonded corners. Installation canbe by the direct fix method or by twist infixing lugs.

GlazingInward opening windows are internallyglazed and outward opening windows areexternally glazed, with a maximum glassthickness of 54mm for fixed lights and vents(inside glazed) and 33mm (outside glazed).
