The health and safety of our people continued to be our top priority, with the majority of our sites demonstrating improvements in safety performance.

A significant series of innovative health, safety and wellbeing projects were rolled out across the business during 2011 including the Kinetic Health Van and safety leader’s workshops. However we still have to remain focused and have some hard work ahead of us in 2012 to ensure we continue to strive towards our goal of zero-harm and providing an injury free and safe work environment.

The year started with devastating news of widespread flooding across Queensland. Xstrata acted immediately donating $2 million to the Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal.

Our donations and sponsorships continued with the proud announcement of a $2 million donation to the Royal Flying Doctor Service for the redevelopment of their Mount Isa base.

The Xstrata Community Program North Queensland secured nine new partners, providing $3.6 million to support north Queensland communities in six key areas: social and community development, education, health, environment, enterprise and job creation, and arts and culture.

The past 12 months have also included the announcement of operational expansions and project advances for Mount Isa Mines, including the commencement of construction for Xstrata Zinc’s $246 million Lady Loretta mine and, the $175 million acquisition of the Mount Margaret Mining Project and the transition from open pit to underground mining and magnetite processing as part of the $589 million project to extend the life of the Ernest Henry operations.

Sustainability initiatives also remained a key focus this year. Our future is about achieving the full potential of growth opportunities, while continually improving our environmental performance. We have committed in excess of $275 million on environmental initiatives since acquiring Mount Isa Mines in 2003.

Some of the initiatives we’re continuing to undertake include monitoring and further reducing emissions from the smelters and maintaining the green buffer zone between the mine and the community.

In addition to these environmental initiatives, we announced plans to sustain the future of our Mount Isa operations by expanding mining and concentrate production, while phasing out copper smelting at Mount Isa and refining operations in Townsville by the end of 2016.

The announcement was made in conjunction with our submission of a new Environmental Management Plan to the Queensland Government outlining our long-term strategy to achieve growth opportunities, while meeting environmental obligations.

Xstrata Mount Isa Mines is working closely with the Queensland Government’s Department of Environment and Resource Management to transition to a new environmental authority. We’ve invested over $27 million in capital expenditure between 2008 and 2010 to develop the new Environmental Management Plan, which is the culmination of 21 discrete scientific studies by two universities and 14 consultant companies.

In early October, we made a significant announcement in relation to the long-term supply of electricity and gas for our operations in north west Queensland. This decision

offers the most reliable and cost effective solution for our energy requirements and for the community.

Xstrata Zinc and Copper collected numerous industry awards in 2011 for outstanding performance by our apprentices, our role model women in mining, our community contributions and our technical achievements with process engineering and plant operations.

Our operations also received extensive coverage on national television. In early August, popular roving weather reporter from Channel Seven’s Sunrise program Grant Denyer conducted live crosses from the Xstrata Mount Isa Mines site. Channel Ten also visited Ernest Henry Mining to film scenes for two nationally watched children’s programs; Scope and Totally Wild.

We should be proud of our efforts throughout 2011 and together we would like to congratulate each of you who contributed to making this year a great success.

May you and your families have a safe and happy festive season.

2011 year of achievementsThis year our workforce should feel incredibly proud. Throughout the year we have made a number of significant announcements in relation to operational expansions, staff achievements and increased support for both our local communities and broader communities in need. We’ve also seen our unique operations showcased on national television and our business recognised as industry leaders.

The relatively small 22-strong Bowen team work in what could be considered a high risk site – feeding 54 beehive ovens reaching temperatures of up to 1300 degrees and

operating various pieces of mobile and fixed machinery – yet their safety record remains clean.

Xstrata Zinc Australia Chief Operating Officer Brian Hearne congratulated the team during a recent trip to Bowen.

“The greatest cause of incidents in our business is a failure to identify hazards. Everybody at Bowen Coke Works knows their jobs and knows the site. You have all built an evidently strong safety culture here,” Brian said.

“Bowen Coke Works sets the example for all in Xstrata Zinc to follow.”

Lead Smelter Manager Scott Ezzy agreed by saying the 22-strong Bowen team was a model operation.

“We have a long-serving team at Bowen – everybody knows their jobs inside out. The average employee has been with us 15 years which is a testament to the leadership of our site superintendent, Bruce Coles,” Scott said.

“We always put safe production first with all our employees and contractors and work towards risk reduction for our site. We conduct one-on-one discussions on site, round table discussions during PASS and workplace observations and our senior management team review the site on a regular basis.

“The important thing is to keep the dialogue open, ongoing and honest.”

The site has recently introduced a number of innovations to improve production and reduce safety risks including a mobile screening plant for crushing coke, which has replaced an old fixed plant, and two pneumatic suction vibrators which have improved coal unloading from the coal wagons, eliminating the need to manually jack-hammer the wagons.

Five years injury free at Bowen Coke Works

Farewell John ...The Bowen Coke Works team fondly farewelled Production Worker John Williams who retired after 37 years service to the facility. The farewell dinner in November also marked Keith (Humphrey) Atfield’s 40 years of ongoing service as an operator maintainer – mechanical at Bowen Coke Works.

“Young guys coming through the ranks at Bowen Coke Works can only learn from role models like Humphrey and John,” Brian Hearne said.

“Their service is one of the main reasons Bowen Coke Works is a model operation.”

Bowen Coke Works staff celebrated their five-year milestone in November with a team barbecue, with more celebrations to come.

“The team at Bowen bring life experiences to their jobs and that makes a difference too. I give them all credit for this achievement,” Scott said.

Bowen Coke Works reached an incredible five years Lost Time Injury (LTI) free in October, an achievement staff put down to a tight team, a 5% annual turnover and a culture where a focus on safety is a non-negotiable.

Underground production underway at EHMErnest Henry Mining (EHM) has successfully transitioned to an exciting new future in underground mining and magnetite processing, with its open pit mine completed and underground production now underway.

The transition is a major milestone in the progression of the $589 project to extend EHM’s life by more than 12 years beyond open pit completion to

2024, through the construction and operation of a major shaft underground mine and magnetite processing plant.

Steve de Kruijff – Chief Operating Officer Xstrata Copper North Queensland, said the extension of the Ernest Henry operation ensures ongoing economic benefits for Queensland and the region.

“Ernest Henry is strategically important for our north Queensland copper business,” he said.

“Xstrata Copper became Queensland’s first exporter of magnetite concentrate in June 2011 when our first shipment of magnetite concentrate produced at Ernest Henry departed the Port of Townsville bound for Asia, creating a new industry for Queensland.

“Our investment in the Ernest Henry operation is also protecting and creating jobs, with 330 jobs created during the project construction phase and 400 full-time jobs created from 2013.

“Our investment and growth strategy also included the recent acquisition of the Mount Margaret Mining Project near Cloncurry, which is expected to create an additional 100 full-time jobs, some of which are being sourced

from Ernest Henry Mining’s open pit workforce.”

Ore will be trucked from underground via a decline at rates of approximately three million tonnes per annum until the underground shaft is commissioned in 2013, enabling production rates to ramp up to approximately 6 million tonnes at full capacity.

Myles Johnston – EHM General Manager, said the underground shaft sink is expected to commence towards the end of 2011.

“The shaft will be sunk to a depth of 1,000 metres enabling production levels averaging 50,000 tonnes of copper and 70,000 ounces of gold in concentrate from 2013 when the shaft is commissioned to 2024,” he said.

FEATURE

DECEMBER 2011 MINE TO MARKET 3

“We will also produce approximately 1.2 million tonnes of magnetite concentrate per annum at full capacity from the second half of 2012 when the required feed becomes available.

“Our transition to underground mining and magnetite processing is an exciting milestone and I am extremely proud to play a part in developing a mine that will extend Ernest Henry’s life by another 12 years, enabling ongoing benefits for the Cloncurry community and our workforce, and further strengthening our north Queensland business.”

From 2007 to 2011, Ernest Henry has contributed close to $4 million towards projects and events directly benefitting the

Cloncurry community through its Corporate Social Involvement programs.

Andrew Daniels – Cloncurry Mayor, said Ernest Henry’s extension provides economic security for the community.

“Ernest Henry Mine is a major employer in the Cloncurry Shire, so extending the mine’s life by another 12 years brings security to future investment, schools, doctors, hospitals and all those things a community requires to stay strong and to continue prospering,” Mayor Daniels said.

Mount Isa Mines was the overall winner in the annual North West Minerals Provence Mine Rescue Challenge this year.

The seven competing teams battled it out over two days in October with four teams from Mount Isa Mines and one team each from Ernest Henry Mining

(EHM), MMG Century Mine and Resolute’s Ravenswood Mine fiercely competing.

Captained by Matt Cain, Mount Isa’s E Crew won the main prize with Tyrone Campbell and Myles Kelly, both from George Fisher Mine, winning Captain of the Year and Squadman of the Year respectively.

This year’s challenge was coordinated by the Xstrata Copper Safety and Health Department and hosted at George Fisher Mine.

Darren Bracey – Xstrata Copper North Queensland’s Emergency and Protective Services Superintendent, said the teams were put through their paces in six categories with

challenging and realistic scenarios including a road accident rescue, vertical rescue, underground search and rescue, fire, first aid, and a theory and skills event.

“In a hard fought battle it came down to just a handful of points spread across the top three teams; Mount Isa E Crew, EHM and Mount Isa B Crew,” Darren said.

Brian Hearne – Xstrata Zinc Australia Chief Operating Officer congratulated the teams on their skills and spirit.

“The annual mine rescue challenge is an important tool for us to put our mine rescue teams to the test. The strength of the Mount Isa teams gives us a lot of confidence in our operations,” Brian said.

“I would also like to thank all those involved in the coordination of the event, particularly the management team at George Fisher Mine for staging this year’s challenge, and the support provided by Kinetic Health, Queensland Ambulance Service and Queensland Fire and Rescue Service.”

Steve de Kruijff – Xstrata Copper North Queensland Chief Operating Officer, said the opportunity to have external mine rescue

teams attend the challenge each year allowed each team to benchmark and learn more from each other about mine rescue procedures.

“ The health and safety of our employees is our number one priority at Xstrata Mount Isa Mines and these sorts of events ensure we continue to remain up to date with rescue techniques,” Steve said.

Internal awards were also presented to Mount Isa Mines teams during the challenge with Mount Isa B Crew taking out the Rescue Award and Mount Isa E Crew winning the First Aid Award.

Bert du Plessis – Mining Team Leader, George Fisher Mine Expansion Project, said the expansion of the underground mine was gaining momentum and plans are being implemented to ensure the 2013 production goals are met.

“Seeing the project develop has been really rewarding for the expansion team. Importantly, our commitment to safety has paid off with all the expansion works completed to date without major injury,” he said.

The major areas of work are around: » The intake/hoist shaft for which surface

works have commenced » Decline development which has now

reached a depth of 1052 metres » A fresh air shaft which is under construction » Exhaust shaft for which pilot holes have

been drilled. There are currently 166 people working

on the expansion team. To date, they have successfully removed the services from the existing LE72 fresh air raise in preparation for the conversion to a hoisting shaft. An additional return air shaft has been blind sunk to 84.5 meters and a pilot hole has been drilled for the large 6.3 metre diameter raise bore, which is the largest of its kind in Australia.

The JA72 decline is progressing to reach the bottom of LE72 shaft, so it can be further extended by raise boring.

Currently the winders are being upgraded and the head frame is being manufactured to allow the LE72 shaft to be widened to 7.3 metres and lined to increase the shaft’s structural integrity. The LE72 shaft will be used to hoist ore to the surface once the project is completed.

In an associated $36 million project, a new surface crushing facility is also under

construction for George Fisher North, with a significant amount of structural work completed on the reclaim tunnel and civil construction well advanced.

The reclaim tunnel feeds ore to the main screen feed conveyor which separates the small and large rocks, with the larger rocks sent back through the crusher and re-circulated until they meet the minimum size requirement. The ore is then fed to the stockpiles via a radial stacking conveyor and ready for transport to the concentrator.

Work on the underground crushing and ore handling facility is expected to be completed by the second half of 2013. At that time, around 40% of the crushing currently conducted in Mount Isa will be relocated to George Fisher Mine.

Xstrata Zinc is also continuing to implement the Our Mine project which is aiming to improve the operational efficiency of George Fisher Mine to ensure it is of world class standard by every measure by 2013. This project has seen significant investment in improved underground infrastructure and operational resources during 2011 which have led to substantial improvements in all performance indicators. This includes development metres, rehabilitation, long hole drilling, cable bolt metres, and shotcrete sprayed.

Joachim Golling – General Manager GFM, said that progress with expansion and positive results with the Our Mine project had capped off a successful year.

“We have had a few challenges this year, with underground water being the biggest. However we have continued to move closer towards our goals of making GFM a world class, low cost producer by 2013,” said Jo.

Workers then viewed the Bakhash height safety display and discussed fall protection equipment, as well as the Protector Alsafe Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) display.

One of the week’s highlights was the interactive Safe Spine sessions which included an exercise program to prevent soft tissue injuries.

Three million hours lost time injury (LTI) free at MICO was also celebrated with t-shirts being issued to highlight this achievement.

Sonia Finney – Superintendent for Safety and Training with MICO, said employees should be proud of their accomplishment.

“We’d like to congratulate MICO and contract employees on their fantastic safety achievement,” said Sonia.

The Kinetic Health Surveillance Van also visited the R62 building to conduct ‘pit-stop’ checks. This involved checking blood pressure, total cholesterol, total glucose and body mass index.

The crews from the Zinc Lead Concentrator marked Safe Work Australia Week by providing everyone passing through the Clean in Clean Out facility a healthy BBQ breakfast.

Around 100 people passed through the ‘pit stop’ display each day and Rick Leeman – Health and Safety Superintendent with the Zinc Lead Concentrator said most took up the offer of a healthy breakfast.

“It was great to see employees line up to participate in the Kinetic Health Van ‘pit stop’ and it was reassuring to know that many understood the importance of having a nourishing breakfast,” he said.

A BBQ held at the George Fisher Expansion Project was also successful with people attending from the across the site.

To reduce these alarming statistics and encourage all working Australians to get involved and concentrate on safety in their workplace, a health and safety

campaign was promoted through the annual Safe Work Australia Week.

Safe Work Australia Week, which was celebrated in Queensland from 23 to 29 October this year, is an initiative of Safe Work Australia, a statutory agency jointly funded by the Commonwealth, State and Territory governments.

In late September, the Queensland Government released the Commissioner for Mine Safety and Health’s Annual Performance Report 2010–11, which revealed that Queensland continues to have one of the safest mining industries in the world.

Steve de Kruijff – Xstrata Copper North Queensland Chief Operating Officer, said Xstrata continued to make safety improvements to all operations in north Queensland.

“Our safety record demonstrates this through year on year improvement and while Queensland is one of the safest mining industries in the world, we still have a lot of work ahead of us to reach our target of zero harm,” said Steve.

“Safe Work Week is of vital importance in spreading the message through the entire community that safety is for everyone – and that we all have a role in cutting injury and death from the workplace.”

Xstrata’s north Queensland operations marked Safe Work Australia Week with a number of activities hosted by each site. These included a scratch-it competition for all north Queensland Copper employees and contractors with three great prizes awarded, as well as the distribution of safety information flyers and memos using a different safety theme for each day of the week. The safety themes included: Hand Safety; Isolation, Lockout & Tagging; Fire Safety; Alcohol, Drugs and Medication; and Working at Heights.

Putting safety in the spotlight

With more than 100 Queenslanders losing their lives in workplace accidents every year and nearly 30,000 serious injuries and diseases recorded across the state, workplace safety should be a priority for everyone. Overall, total workplace incidents cost the Queensland economy more than $6.2 billion a year.

ENVIRONMENT

11DECEMBER 2011 MINE TO MARKET

The Fire Management Plan was developed following a recommendation as part of Xstrata’s Biodiversity Assessment of ML8058 conducted in 2009.

In relation to preserving biodiversity on our lease, controlled burns assist in two ways. Firstly, it breaks up the fuel load which ensures the surrounding ecosystem and native species are protected from extensive wildfires during the fire season. It also means that there is a patchwork of recently burnt areas and long un-burnt areas across the lease, thereby catering for the requirements of a wide range of species.

Our burning activities are part of an ongoing plan for the area which gives due consideration to vegetation type, safety (of our employees, neighbours and the extended community), asset location (e.g. buildings), access requirements, weather patterns, appropriate treatment of our ecosystem, and coordination and consultation with direct neighbours.

How do you determine which areas to burn? The Fire Management Plan highlights areas we are/will be targeting each year, however this is reassessed annually prior to burning to take into consideration weather conditions, vegetation cover, safety conditions and requests from neighbours for burning in concert with their own burns.

What regulations are followed in conducting the burning? All controlled burns are conducted under a Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) fire permit. The permit stipulates the location of permissible fires; communications protocols with the QFRS call centre; and other conditions, including weather considerations.

Xstrata Mount Isa Mines has engaged an external Fire Management Consultant, who has more than 20 years of experience in conducting controlled burn programs across Northern Australia, to oversee the Fire Management Plan. The consultant and Xstrata are also liaising closely with the Kalkadoon community prior to and during the burning process.

How much land is burnt each year? The Fire Management Plan will be reviewed yearly and the areas to be burnt will be determined based on fuel load, and the area burnt in the previous year’s fire season.

Prior to leaving any area that is burnt during our Fire Management plan controlled burns, the area is checked for a number of things. The perimeter of the burn area is checked for any hotspots which could flare-up or that could throw sparks into an un-burnt area. These are either put out or raked further into the burnt area so that the risk of flying embers is greatly reduced.

The burnt areas are checked again throughout the course of the next few days to confirm that there are no hot spots/flying embers that could start a new fire.

For further information on our controlled burns contact our Community Information hotline on 1800 982 982.

Fire Management PlanAs part of our Fire Management Plan, Xstrata Mount Isa Mines will commence annual controlled burns within our mining lease to reduce the risk of wildfires and to help conserve biodiversity.

The healthy BBQ was enjoyed by the workers who participated in activities that raised awareness about safety related issues. BSafe Bee also made a guest appearance, spreading important messages about Safe Work Australia Week.

Matt Wendtman – Safety Superintendent for the George Fisher Mine Expansion Project, said the BBQ was a fantastic initiative that was embraced by all those who attended.

“It gave us an opportunity to put a real focus on safety at the Project in a fun and proactive way,” said Matt.

Townsville and BowenOperations in Townsville and Bowen celebrated Safe Work Week in a similar fashion. Townsville held a competition for employees with the winners taking home a Bunnings gift voucher and first aid kits.

Bowen operations also spread safety message by holding a BBQ to celebrate five years of restricted work injury free time (RWI) and five years of Lost Time Injury Free (LTI).

Ernest Henry MineAt Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) suppliers displayed the latest in safety gear, giving employees and contractors the opportunity to liaise directly with company representatives and provide feedback on product performance.

Fall protection experts, Capital Safety, completed a series of Working at Heights demonstrations to simulate the potential impact of a fall. Employees were also provided with information on anchorages, connectors and the correct fitting of harnesses.

Brendan Callaghan – Health, Safety and Training Manager at EHM said working at heights is pertinent to the Ernest Henry site, with increased crane work underway to sink the underground shaft.

“Safe Work Australia Week has generated a lot of talk about safety at Ernest Henry and I encourage everyone to maintain this focus throughout the entire year,” said Brendan.

“ Safe Work Week is of vital importance in spreading the message through the entire community that safety is for everyone – and that we all have a role in cutting injury and death from the workplace.”

12 MINE TO MARKET DECEMBER 2011

With a species population of only about 138 individuals, the northern hairy-nosed wombat is critically endangered. But the

population is in the midst of a baby boom, with two baby wombat joeys emerging from the unique nature reserve near St George.

The northern hairy-nosed wombats are the largest of the three wombats of Australia and can weigh up to 40kg and be more than one metre long. Their species got critically low in the 1980’s when the population was less than 40 in the world.

Just over two years ago, the entire wombat colony lived in Epping Forest National Park near Clermont. The species was at risk of extinction from one catastrophic event such as a flood, bushfire, or outbreak of disease, which could have wiped out the entire colony.

To reduce the risk of extinction, Xstrata partnered with the Queensland Department of Environment and Resources Management (DERM) for three years to fund the reintroduction of a second colony of northern hairy-nosed wombats.

Through the Xstrata Community Program Queensland (XCPQ), a second site near St George in south-west Queensland was established with predator-proof fencing, starter wombat burrows, water and food stations, electrical and communication infrastructure, veterinary equipment and predator, pest and weed removal.

The results of the relocation were highly successful, with the 11 relocated animals grazing, digging and sharing burrows with other wombats. Rangers have been able to watch and study interactions within the second colony with night vision cameras.

While the colony in St George is thriving, the first colony at Epping Forest National Park is also having its own baby boom with eight animals carrying joeys in their pouches and three others with young at foot.

In 2011, Xstrata extended its partnership with DERM for a further two years to continue the relocation and reproduction program. Xstrata’s new partnership with DERM will primarily support the program management including establishing a caretaker program at the nature refuge and improving capacity to monitor the behaviour of the wombats and their offspring.

Rebecca Williams – DERM Director of Threatened Species, said the monitoring was teaching scientists more all the time about northern hairy-nosed wombat biology and behaviour.

“From what we know about other wombat species, these youngsters will stay with the mother for about 12 months now they are out of the pouch,” Rebecca said.

“Good conditions and predator control at both colonies have given these animals the boost they needed.”

Xstrata is proud of its efforts to assist in saving this species and protect the ongoing biodiversity of the areas in which it operates.

Baby boom for endangered wombatsMost of us know the rare Sumatran Tiger and China’s Giant Panda, but did you know that Central Queensland is home to one of the rarest animals on Earth: the northern hairy-nosed wombat.

In 2009 Xstrata’s Mount Isa Mines environment team recorded a Red Goshawk on the lease, one of the rarest Australian birds of prey found in northern and eastern Australia.

The Red Goshawk is both nationally and internationally recognised as an endangered species with only about 1,000 adult goshawks left in Australia. This large spectacular bird can be identified by the reddish brown streaks from its chin to belly.

Their long legs and massive feet are capable of killing birds the size of cockatoos and kookaburras. Stealth hunters, the Red Goshawks attack their prey from the air by directly pursuing them.

Essential to their survival are rich habitats with a mosaic of open vegetation, permanent water supplies and a diverse abundance of birds and reptiles. In fact, their presence is one indicator of a well functioning eco-system.

Ensuring this rare bird’s habitat is not compromised is just one responsibility of the environment team in Mount Isa, who ensures that the health, function and long-term viability of our natural environments are preserved and our site’s impacts are minimised.

Key initiatives to protect the Red Goshawk include effective fire management, managed grazing and appropriate weed management practices.

The environment team will be completing follow-up surveys in the near future to track the progress of this important bird.

In November Xstrata Healthy Kids celebrated its final session for 2011, following a successful 32 week program that helped Mount Isa parents and children become more active and healthy.

giveaway over four months from July 2011 encouraging participants to enter a colouring-in competition for children or share healthy family tips for parents. A total of seven refurbished laptops were given away to Xstrata Healthy Kids parents and children.

If your family or someone you know benefited from Xstrata Healthy Kids and wants to see the program return in 2012, Xstrata would love to hear from you. Simply call the Community Feedback Hotline on 1800 982 982 or email [email protected]

Xstrata Healthy Kids launched in March 2011 with over 150 participants and ran three times per week, providing a variety of fun physical activities delivered by qualified local teachers.

The Mount Isa community embraced the free and exciting initiative with more than 2,700 attendances throughout the year.

Xstrata Healthy Kids has provided a safe, supervised and non-competitive environment for kids and their families to participate in physical exercise while also building social skills.

Steve de Kruijff – Chief Operating Officer, Xstrata Copper North Queensland, said Xstrata was pleased with the success of the program, which reinforces our commitment to promote a healthy and vibrant community in Mount Isa.

“Contributing to the development of sustainable communities lies at the core of our social licence to operate and this grassroots program has helped Mount Isa families to get active and improve their health,” Steve said.

Xstrata Healthy Kids launched in March 2011 with over 150 participants and ran three times per week, providing a variety of fun physical activities delivered by qualified local teachers.

Activities were specially designed by Physical Education Teachers to cater for toddlers, primary schoolers and their parents. The

activities were fun and engaging and suited all skill and fitness levels.

Parents were able to attend structured sessions with their toddlers run by qualified early childhood teachers, providing great play ideas and helping to build better parent and child relationships.

Primary school aged children attended sessions conveniently held after school to reinforce important coordination and social skills and achieve a sense of success through physical activity in a safe and non-competitive environment.

Xstrata Healthy Kids also encouraged parents and other family members to participate through the Walk ‘n’ Talk sessions, not only to be positive role models, but also to stay in touch with other members of the community.

In August 2011 Xstrata Healthy Kids was nominated for the ‘Community Interaction’ category of the Australian Mining Prospect Awards for its contribution to the health and wellbeing of the Mount Isa community.

14 MINE TO MARKET DECEMBER 2011

The night was a great success and wouldn’t have been complete without the support of North Queensland Cowboys Matthew Bowen, Ashton Sims

and Glen Hall who provided a myriad of signed sporting memorabilia that was auctioned off to a room full of enthusiastic bidders.

The prize item of the night was a framed 2011 Queensland Origin Jersey signed by Darren Lockyer, going for a whopping $2,500. In total over $9,000 was raised through the auction and raffle ticket sales.

Nathan Pike – General Manager Sustainability Xstrata Copper North Queensland, had the great honour of presenting BUSHkids representatives Dr Neil Bartels – Chairman, and Carlton Meyn – General Manager, with a $60,000 donation on behalf of Xstrata Mount Isa Mines.

“The obstacles faced by health care providers and patients in rural areas are vastly different than those in urban areas,” said Nathan.

“The Mount Isa Community is very lucky to have a local BUSHkids centre offering rural families and their children therapy support that would not ordinarily be available to them.

“Without access to these services, families would need to undertake extensive travel or

relocate their families to an urban centre where such therapy support is more readily available,” he said.

In 2009 Xstrata Mount Isa Mines entered into a five year partnership with BUSHkids and are proud to continue to support the initiative as it celebrates 75 years of service in 2011.

Carlton Meyn – General Manager BUSHkids, spoke highly of the communities support for the evening.

“The generosity of the Mount Isa business community, along with parents, other stakeholders and well wishers, ensured we had a successful night at our Masquerade Ball,” said Carlton.

“We are very grateful for the support of Xstrata Mount Isa Mines and were delighted they were able to join us for the evening,” he said.

On Tuesday 6 December the Royal Queensland Bush Children’s Health Scheme launched a campaign officially rebranding the organisation as ‘BUSHkids’. As a part of the campaign they launched a new face and website, and are calling for public and private support so they may continue to help the children of rural and remote Queensland. Pit Stop is an Australian program developed in 1999 by the Gasgoyne Public Health Unit in Western Australia in response to the declining health of

Australian men. Julia Mansfield – Health Coordinator

said the program compares body parts to car parts to encourage men to check their waist measurement.

“A lot of men don’t like to acknowledge health concerns so seemingly simple issues may become larger health problems. We geared Pit Stop to all employees to empower and inform men and women to be proactive in their own health management in an informal and non-threatening environment,” she said.

At EHM Pit Stop participants moved through a series of nine stations where health team members as well as local and regional health professionals conducted checks on different health aspects from blood pressure to flexibility.

“We provided feedback to individuals on their results at the end so they learned more about their own health and areas they could improve upon and we were pleased to be busy for the full three hours covering shift change over,” Julia said.

Bill Koch – Concentrator Mechanical Technician enjoyed the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of how the body functions and encouraged others to become more aware of their health.

“Events like Pit Stop give workers the chance to be more informed,” Bill said.

“I know from my own experience that it is important to have regular check ups as I had a health scare recently and I was given a second chance all because I was checked.”

Aptly named the X-Men, the Xstrata Zinc employees triumphed over nine fiercely competitive teams. Banding together in a

spectacular demonstration of teamwork and determination, the X-Men brought home the Australian Workers’ Union Shield which is now displayed proudly on a Mount Isa mantelpiece.

Jimmy Larkin – Haulage Superintendant Zinc Open Pits and X-Men team manager, said winning the competitive Battle of the Mines contest was an amazing achievement.

“The X-Men were runners up in 2009 and third in 2010 so to come back this year and take out the title was a fantastic feeling,” he said.

John Venz – Underground Foreman GFM and X-Men team captain/coach, said as well as training, team bonding played a large part in the X-Men’s success.

“Following X-Men’s last three training sessions we held team BBQs and a lot of players already knew each other from participating in Mount Isa’s local league and union competitions,” said John.

“The team was also very united as many of the X-Men had played together in previous Battle of the Mines competitions,” he said.

The camaraderie within the team was evident in the lead up and the victory has boosted morale at work and on the field.

John Venz said lifelong friendships have been created through the carnival, not just within the X-Men and their families but also through meeting mine employees from other teams.

“Still today, the boys play footy once a week to stay in touch and maintain their relationships,” he said.

“These friendships stem from the teamwork displayed in the lead up to, and during, the carnival. It wasn’t about one person leading the team, the whole team provided input and everyone worked together.

“It has been ten long years since the Battle of the Mines shield has been in the hands of the Zinc team and without the efforts and commitment of team manager Jimmy Larkin, as well as Dan Frazer, Scott Beaton, Jolene Bishop, and Tamika Venz our victory would not have been possible.

“To all the X-Men players, thank you very much for your efforts leading up to the carnival and your fantastic performance on the day. I would also like to thank the families and friends who showed us so much support,” said John.

After their victory on Saturday 16 October, the X-Men held a special celebration with their families.

The Zinc team will be back in 2012 to defend their Battle of the Mines title.

Victorious X-Men Xstrata Zinc employees from George Fisher Mine (GFM), Black Star, and the Zinc Concentrators fought their way to victory in the 2011 Battle of the Mines rugby league competition, smashing their opponents Century Chariots 26-0 in the final showdown.

As he officially opened the building the Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor, Councillor Michael Brunker, paid special tribute to the

contribution of a $750,000 donation from the Xstrata Community Program North Queensland (XCPNQ) in 2007 which was instrumental in seeing the development progress.

“I’m not backward in coming forward about corporate citizenship from mining companies but I have to take my hat off to Xstrata,” the Mayor said.

“I know the Bowen Coke Works is not the biggest part of your operation but from the minute Xstrata stepped forward with this huge contribution it was the catalyst to get it going.

“This centre is an essential piece of infrastructure for everyone from youth to senior citizens and an important project for the Council.”

Xstrata partnered with the Council, the Queensland Government Department of Communities, Queensland Police and PCYC Queensland to drive the development of the centre which is the 50th PCYC constructed in the state.

The facility boasts a large sports hall for basketball, gymnastics, martial arts and other fitness activities, three squash courts, a large function room with a stage, DJ booth and kitchen, a cafe with an outdoor play area and several small meeting rooms.

PCYC Queensland Chairperson Rob Osmotherly said it was the best centre developed to date.

“Each centre that is developed is different but the Bowen PCYC is the best facility I’ve seen with the best Branch Manager,” Rob said.

His sentiments were echoed by Queensland Police Service Commissioner Bob Aitkinson who said that in viewing the facility and knowing the support it has received in Bowen,

he felt enthused about the future for youth in the community.

Xstrata Zinc Australia Chief Operating Officer Brian Hearne was among the official party and guests who previewed the facility before it hosted a Family Open Day for the Bowen community on 26 November 2011.

“Contributing to the communities where we operate is important to Xstrata. It is central to the way we work,” Brian said.

Xstrata’s decision to support the project was based on results from Xstrata’s Community Attitudes Survey, conducted every two years to track needs and the opinions of the communities where Xstrata operates in north Queensland.

“In 2007, the survey told us that here in Bowen, people were concerned about the future of their youth. Youth crime was an issue, and a need for recreation activities was an opportunity,” Brian said.

“We’re very proud to be involved in the Bowen PCYC. We’re providing a safe and secure facility for Bowen’s young people to play sport and make friends, as well as providing a valuable resource for the whole community.”

Bowen PCYC opens its doorsThe opening of the $5 million Bowen Policy-Citizens Youth Club in November was the culmination of years of work by many organisations and individuals to create a marvellous facility for the whole community to enjoy.

“ Xstrata helps us a lot with the PCYC in Mount Isa and in other places around the state. These developments couldn’t happen without a lot of business support but your company has been fantastic, thank you.” Bob Aitkinson – Queensland Police Service Commissioner

Xstrata’s partnership with PCYC is the largest community investment in Bowen through the XCPNQ.

Established in 2005, the program has provided a total of $1.2 million in community funds to Bowen, including several school improvement projects.

The total amount invested through the program in the communities of Xstrata’s north Queensland operations – Bowen, Mount Isa, Cloncurry and Townsville – now totals $20 million.

The Code of Conduct sets expectations for all employees. Concerns about safety practices, health issues, bullying, fraud, unfair treatment, theft, dishonest business activities, conflicts of interest, misappropriation of company resources, bribery or any other unethical behaviour in the workplace should be reported to an immediate supervisor or manager, or with a more senior officer or executive at the operation.

The training course assisted 240 participants this year in Townsville, Mackay, Toowoomba and Ipswich, allowing them to participate equally in

today’s online knowledge society.Ruby Pritchard – The Smith Family Project

Coordinator, said the program was designed to facilitate access to employment opportunities and to help meet personal digital literacy needs.

“National and international research has also shown digital literacy to be a key component of engaging individuals in lifelong learning and contributing to social inclusion,” said Ruby.

“This partnership builds on the initial three year commitment made in 2008 by Xstrata to fund the Learning for Life Program, which provided financially disadvantaged students and their families with assistance at key transition points throughout their lives, such as tertiary mentoring and financial literacy courses.

“Thanks to Xstrata, participants will develop a range of knowledge, skills, and generic and specific competencies in computer literacy to

support them in gaining employment.”Key units within the program include

introduction to MS Word, learning how to print and shut down a computer, searching on the internet, finding a job online, preparing a job application, using email, and online banking.

At the end of the course, participants are given a fully refurbished desktop computer and accessories, computer software, 12 months wireless broadband connection, and a colour printer.

The Smith Family Queensland Course in Digital Literacy has also been accredited by the Queensland Government’s Training and Recognition Council, with no financial contribution required from participants.

CLONCURRY COMMUNITY PRECINCT

Construction commencesCloncurry will soon boast state of the art social infrastructure with construction underway on the town’s $8 million Cloncurry Community Precinct.

The facility will incorporate a new library, art gallery, function rooms, amenities and outdoor open space, complimenting the existing art

deco Shire Hall next door which will also be refurbished as part of the project.

Andrew Daniels – Cloncurry Shire Mayor, says it is an exciting time for Cloncurry.

“We expect to open the precinct in June next year, increasing opportunities for not only Cloncurry’s local groups and events but the community as a whole,” Mayor Daniels said.

Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) contributed $750,000 towards the project under the Xstrata Community Program North Queensland and the Queensland Government has also provided $750,000 in funding.

“This funding is a great result for the community and will be a valuable contribution towards developing a strong cultural focal point for Cloncurry Shire,” Mayor Daniels said.

Myles Johnston – EHM General Manager, said it was rewarding to see construction underway for the project.

“We are extremely proud to support the development of the precinct as it will create a modern facility and a central hub for residents of our local community,” Myles said.

“Social infrastructure projects such as this are crucial in the development of sustainable communities and our partnership with Cloncurry Shire Council and the Queensland Government reaffirms our commitment to supporting growth and development in Cloncurry.

“We hope the project will increase the functionality of the area and we look forward to the precinct being completed in the first half of 2012.”
