Exploring Humanitarian Law: Teachers Conference Tues. Aug. 19 to Wed. Aug. 20, 2014 in Ottawa

This conference is for teachers who want to provide lessons in humanitarian law. Exploring Humanitarian Law (EHL) is an international education program about humanitarian action, international law, and justice that is geared to secondary school students (ages 13-18). Teachers will be provided with educational resources to supplement curriculum requirements in the Social Sciences and Humanities, Law, Geography, English, Religious Studies, and History in Ontario. The conference is offered free of charge to all interested teachers in Ontario. Participants will receive comprehensive instruction from a Canadian Red Cross Legal Advisor, Delegates from the International Committee of the Red Cross who have worked in conflict zones and Ontario teachers currently using the EHL curriculum in their classrooms. Topics include the humanitarian perspective, limits in war, international justice, and international responses to the consequences of war. Conference participants will receive an EHL Toolkit with classroom-ready lesson plans and supplementary materials addressing a variety of different teaching methodologies.
