PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY

I am a Consultant Vascular Surgeon at Harley Street in London and Guildford, Surrey. Initially an academic at Oxford University, I now have a very busy practice, which I have built into a group practice through The Whiteley Clinic. Through this Clinic approach I insure that we offer the cutting edge procedures in vascular surgery. The Clinic that I have set up supports clinical research, which keeps our practice at the forefront of the areas that we specialize in. I introduced VNUS Closure (radiofrequency ablation of Varicose Veins) into the UK in 1999. My team and I developed a percutaneous method of this procedure and over the last 5 years have built up the world largest series of this technique. In addition, the results that we have produced are the best of any technique currently available in the treatment of Varicose Veins. Our current work is centered around the successful treatment of ovarian and vulval varicose veins. Many females have unsuccessful varicose vein surgery as traditional vein surgeons believe that their problem must come from the legs. In 5–10 % of females who have had children this is not the case – and so current treatments fail. We have developed a technique of treating such veins and will be producing our results in 2005. All of our surgeons perform leg bypass surgery, abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery and carotid surgery. By acting as a group practice, we insure that each operation is performed by 2 consultants, speeding up the operation and reducing complications due to time on the table – and we can provide a high level of post-operative cover and care for our patients.

VISITS TO OVERSEAS CENTERS as a Trainee

ALLGEMEINES KRANKENHAUS HARBURG, HAMBURG, GERMANY - April 1995, March 1997, April 1998 Prof. Dr. H Imig has a special interest in aortic surgery. His group are also producing work on the fate of vascular grafts after implantation. I have set up some collaborative research on this subject and am publishing and presenting our current results. ST. ANTONIUS ZIEKENHUIS, NIEUWEGEIN, THE NETHERLANDS - February 1996 & March 1997 Dr Frans Moll has invented an instrument that allows superficial femoral artery endarterectomy to be performed through a single groin incision. The early results of this technique are excellent. I visited his centre and have performed this technique under his guidance. I have introduced this to the Royal Berkshire Hospital Reading, where we have been performing this technique since February 1997.

SURGICAL INVENTIONS 1991 - Depth Specific Cone Biopsy Instrument As a medical student I invented the above instrument to reduce the complication of cervical cone biopsy. It won 3rd place in a national competition but unfortunately the geometry made it commercially too expensive to produce commercially. 1995 - Abdominal Guarding Probe This probe quantifies abdominal guarding. It is currently undergoing clinical testing and development. Preliminary results have been presented at the Association of Surgeon Meeting, 1998. Now being further evaluated at the Department of Medical Electronics, Royal Surrey County Hospital. 1996 - Vascular Doppler Forceps UK Patent Application GB 2 302 025; date of publication 8/1/97. Currently a prototype is undergoing clinical assessment. The finished product is currently being sold by Arthrodax.

ACADEMIC PURSUITS

I have an active research program, specializing in Venous conditions and the treatment of Venous disease. I have an MD student, Mr Babak Kianifard, who is performing a study on the role of perforating veins in the recurrence of Varicose Veins. Data collection will be completed in April 2004 with a view to having written up the Thesis by Sept 2004. The funding was provided by my clinic and the idea was derived from theories I have been working on for the last 5 years.

OTHER INTERESTS MEDICAL PAGES: Building on interests in developing new concepts and in the emerging

Internet in the UK, a colleague and I founded Medical Pages (http://www.medicalpages.co.uk) and I am currently Managing Director

of this growing company. We have franchised into Ireland (http://www/medicalpages.ie).

THE WHITELEY CLINIC: Building on the system that I developed to use VNUS Closure to its Full potential maximum and the simultaneous interest in the Medical

world about Chambers of doctors, I founded The Whiteley Clinic in 2001.

This is now a thriving Clinic in Guildford and London. I have founded a Charity – The Whiteley Foundation – which supports our research activity.
