EGX COSPLAY MASQUERADE RULES
These rules apply to the masquerade competitions taking place on the Thursday, Friday and Sunday of
EGX 2015.
Contact: [email protected]
The EGX Cosplay Masquerades, presented in association with Zonic Productions, are a
group of competitions to showcase those amazing costumes and skits we all love to see at
conventions! 1.
The competitions (taking place on Thursday, Friday and Sunday) are open to everyone attending EGX
2015. All ages are welcome, but if you are under 16, a parent or guardian must sign your entry form.
You may enter as an individual or a group. 2.
Enter on the day by attending the event and filling out a form at the cosplay desk one hour before
each competition at the latest. If specific music is needed please apply as early as possible as
signups requiring specific tech arrangements will be limited (Music must be presented in mp3 format
on a USB stick and must be fully edited and checked for corruption beforehand). Upon signing up if
you wish to withdraw please let the cosplay organiser know at least 30 minutes before each
competition. 3.
Purchased costumes are not allowed in the competition. You may wear a bought costume on stage
but to qualify for a prize, your costume must be at least 75% made by you, or your friends or family.
Please specify in the entry form below if your costume is made or bought and give a rough percentage
taking into account all props, wigs and customization of purchased products and garments. 4.
Pyrotechnics, Sharp Objects, Firepower (including but not limited to water pistols, confetti
cannons and BB/foam ammo guns), Strobe Lighting, Laser Beams or any form of materials
considered dangerous according to Health and Safety regulations will not be allowed in the
competition.
In order to comply with Health and Safety rules please have all props, special effects and weapons
checked at the desk before entering each competition (Toy guns must contain obvious blaze and/or a
brightly coloured safety tip and must not contain ammunition of any sort). Similarly any stage effects that could delay or inhibit any others performance including use of liquids,
thrown or scattered objects, sticky substances, glitter, powder or confetti are also prohibited. If in
doubt of any part of either your costume or skit that could not comply with these regulations please
contact the cosplay organizer directly for confirmation. EGX and Zonic Productions reserve the right to
refuse any material which may be considered offensive, hazardous or inappropriate for the family
audience of the event
5.
The competition will be judged by a panel of experienced cosplayers. Three prizes will be given
with the option of honorable mention awards. Costume points (50%) will be allocated on the basis of:
● Complexity Difficulty of costume project chosen and how confidently this was overcome.
● Craftsmanship – how detailed, creative and well constructed the costume is taking into
account application of skills, materials used and practicality based on movement and use in
performance.
● Accuracy – How close the costume is to the characters original design.
● Interpretation – If you have done your own spin on a character (say a female version of a
male character), how consistent and authentically this was achieved.
Performance points (50%) will be allocated on the basis of:
● Execution – How fluently choreographed and presentable your performance or poses are
taking into account application of skills such as acting, modeling, dance, music or any other
related discipline you have chosen to include in your entry.
● Fidelity – How accurate and faithful your performance or poses are to your chosen
character including personality traits, context of the original series and subtext.
● Interpretation – If you are portraying an original take on an existing character (say a darker
version of lighthearted character), how consistent and authentically this was achieved.
NOTE: In order to improve judging on accuracy, interpretation and fidelity please provide a photo
and/or video link to the character you are cosplaying along with your entry form – This is optional but
will greatly increase chances of points due to additional character knowledge. Original characters and
fan creations are allowed on stage but will not qualify for a prize. Progress books are encouraged but
not required upon entry.
