K-100™The hoist line that’s ahead of its

time—but ready today.

We’ve talked to hundreds of crane owners and operators about the merits of K-100. As a result, we’ve created this eGuide to walk you through some of the major considerations when using it. We understand where, when, and under what conditions K-100 can deliver the greatest benefits and advantages. After all, steel-wire rope hoist lines have been around for more than 150 years, so it’s only natural to have questions about a product this innovative. We think you’ll agree that the world has changed a lot in the last century and half. It’s time to consider how synthetic lines can improve crane operations for the better.

After reviewing this guide, we’re certain you’ll see the benefits of K-100. We hope it answers your questions and demonstrates how switching your hoist line can make your operation more productive, cost effective and safer.

Most importantly, if you have questions please contact us at [email protected] or visit us online at www.SamsonRope.com to tap into our educational resources, instructive videos, brochures and technical bulletins.

How much reeving time can you save when using K-100?

If your operations require frequent line reeving, K-100 delivers a tremendous reduction in time and labor. For example, reeving 50 ft. of light, flexible K-100 (which weighs only 11 lbs.) is much easier than handling 70 lbs. of heavy, inflexible steel-wire rope. One operator can reeve a block in under five minutes, whereas a steel-wire rope can take operators up to 30 to 40 minutes depending on the size of the crane. In the taxi crane environment, you can reduce setup and takedown time to move cranes on and off site faster.

How does K-100 perform around corrosive chemicals and near salt water?

K-100 is made of high performance fibers that are highly resistant to corrosive environments. Laboratory and field tests confirm that exposure to acids, bases, oils and greases common* on typical job sites will not impact the strength or integrity of the rope. Since K-100 is comprised of synthetic material, it will not oxidize or rust as steel wire does in saltwater environments. K-100 does not require lubrication, further reducing maintenance time, cost and improves cleanliness for line handling.

*For less common chemicals, it is advisable to check with Samson to verify fiber susceptibility based on exposure testing performed by the manufacturer.

How can K-100 reduce my freight costs?

Because K-100 weighs 80% less than steel wire, it costs much less to ship. While freight costs vary by region and distance, the cost of shipping 600 ft. of synthetic hoist rope that weighs only 130 lbs. will be significantly lower than shipping 900 lbs. steel rope. Now consider this: Depending upon the state, many truck cranes have gross weight limits that approach the maximum specified by the DOT. However, that 770 lbs. savings per 600 ft. of rope can help some cranes remain within the weight-to-axle load requirements without having to remove the hoist line and split the load between two vehicles or trailers. This saves set up time on both ends as well as associated labor, fuel and shipping costs.

Want to avoid change outs and rope replacement caused by birdcaging, diving, kinking, and load spin impact?

K-100 is designed with a balanced 12-strand construction, which unlike “rotation-resistant” steel rope produces a torque-free product. It’s simple physics: If no torque is present in the rope design, there is no inherent rotational energy to produce load spin or line twisting. Load spin and birdcage challenges are virtually eliminated. The malleable nature of K-100 allows it to bend, compress and change shape without kinking or damaging the rope’s structure, strength or functionality. In fact, Samson has performed spooling tests to intentionally induce diving. If the rope is spooled with no load and a pick is made nearing maximum line pull, the rope can be forced to dive into the lower layers. However, due to the malleable nature of K-100, this diving is reversible.

Did you know you can reduce back and hand injuries by using K-100?Q:

A:Since it weighs 80% less than steel rope, K-100 requires much less effort to lift and handle. For example, reeving 50 ft. of K-100 weighs only 11 lbs., which will make it that much easier on the operator’s hands, back,

and arms than handling 70 lbs. of steel wire for the same length. Additionally, the fibers used in K-100 are easier on the hands and will not cut or puncture the skin the way frayed steel wires often do.

What applications or crane types is K-100 recommended for?

K-100 is currently available on Grove®/Manitowoc® RT, TM, and NBT crane series. It is an excellent choice for many applications, but bestows particular benefit in corrosive environments such as chemical plants and ocean-side environments. If your crane is not on the approved list, contact Samson or your crane manufacturer directly for options and other suitable crane types.

K-100 is made of synthetic materials; is it a good choice when working in high- or low-temperature environments?

K-100 works well at the extreme ends of both high and low temperatures. However, at the recommended maximum operating temperature of 140°F (60°C), the fiber has a reduced instantaneous strength by approximately 5% to 8%. However, when the rope returns to normal operating temperature below 140°F, the rope’s instantaneous strength returns as well. Instantaneous strength loss will continue to decrease at higher temperatures, up to the ultimate melting temperature, 300°F (149°C), of the rope. While it is advisable to keep K-100 out of contact with high temperature heat sources, incidental contact with hot surfaces, such as crane booms exposed to extended periods of sun exposure, will typically only affect the rope’s surface. Please see Samson’s Tech Bulletin “The Impact of Elevated Temperatures on K-100 Synthetic Crane Hoist Line” for more details. At temperatures below freezing, the load bearing fibers of K-100 can gain up to an additional 10% strength. There are no low temperature limits for K-100.

How do the features of K-100 result in reduced labor costs and increased productivity?

While actual savings will vary by types of operation, a conservative estimate is that K-100 results in 15–20% savings over the lifetime of the line compared to steel rope. And, if you’re changing reeving patterns more than once week, you definitely need to investigate the labor savings K-100 provides: Frequent reeving can boost your actual lifetime savings up to 50%! To figure out what you can save, Samson has developed a real-world ROI calculator that factors in the way you use and maintain your hoist line. We demonstrate real savings based on costs for reeving, shipping, lubrication, labor, time allocation, and replacement frequency to determine whether purchasing K-100 makes economic sense for you. In many cases, we can prove that K-100 delivers a lower total cost of ownership and a better ROI than traditional steel rope. Contact Samson Rope and request ROI Consultation for K-100 today.
