Nearly 40% of the participants were women, a share appreciated very much – may the share be 50% at the next EuroGames! That goal may only be reached by paying more attention to women on all levels within EGLSF, in all member clubs. The board wants to express its gratitude towards the organizers of EuroGames 2008. the EGLSF board was the first to enter before the athletes walked in. EGLSF is licensing EuroGames - there will be no EuroGames without EGLSF, without you as members.

In cooperation with EGLSF, the organizers of EuroGames 2008 organized a conference on human rights linked to LGBT rights and lives. Around 70 people attended the conference, among them representatives of several institutions and governing bodies. The Barcelona declaration was presented and discussed, and the results of those discussions will be the final declaration, which we will report on shortly, and present in the next newsletter.

Internal affairs & Intl. co-operationFuture EuroGamesEuroGames will not take place in 2009 and 2010, since Outgames and Gay Games will be held in Copenhagen and Cologne, respectively. The next EuroGames will take place in 2011, and the board encourages all member clubs to consider organizing EuroGames in 2011, 2012 etc. If you want to know more about the bidding, please contact our general secretary, Lou Manders: [email protected] as soon as possible.

We have plenty of time for developing and improving EuroGames. Fortunately, the EuroGames Advisory Committee was revived at AGA 2008. The chair is Beppo Brem, and we kindly request you to send your impressions and proposals concerning EuroGames to Hermann Brem - Beppo: [email protected].

Award for advocacy workWe are very happy to announce that Tanja Walther, member of Seitenwechsel, Berlin, and member of EGLSF Advocacy Committee will receive the Tolerantia Prize together with Theo Zwanziger, chair of the German Football Association, and Philipp Lahm, football player (Bayern München and the German national team); he is the first German professional football player who in public expresses tolerance towards LBGT football players. The price will be presented on the 20th of September in Warsaw.

Tanja Walther has for several years been taking part in Football against Racism (FARE) campaign, bringing homophobia on the agenda of FARE, German Football Association (DFB) and UEFA (Union of European Football Associations). The board congratulates Tanja, and we express our gratitude for her efforts.

If you have any questions or comments

on the cooperation of EGLSF and FARE, please contact Tanja Walther: [email protected].

Upcoming board meetingsThe next board meeting will take place the 26th-28th of September in Cologne, where the board will meet the local EGLSF club SC Janus and the organizers of Gay Games 2010. On the 26th-28th of November, the board will meet in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and we are looking forward to meeting local and regional Balkan clubs in November. If you have input to the board to discuss, please send it to Anne Jensen: [email protected].

Openly gay athletes in Beijing8 August 2008

The Federation of Gay Games (FGG) salutes the eleven publicly lesbian, gay or bisexual Olympians in Beijing: Judith Arndt (Germany, cycling), Linda Bresonik (Germany, soccer), Imke Duplitzer (Germany, fencing), Vicky Galindo (USA, softball); Gro Hammerseng and Katja Nyberg (Norway, handball; they are a couple); Natasha Kai (USA, soccer), Lauren Lappin (USA, softball); Matthew Mitcham (Australia, diving); Rennae Stubbs (Australia, tennis); and Victoria “Vickan” Svensson (Sweden, soccer).

The FGG is encouraging participation in a campaign to send messages of support to these out LGBT athletes via each country’s Olympic websites.

FGG also invites Olympians, past and present, to participate in Gay Games VIII in Cologne, Germany, opening in late July 2010. FGG Co-president Emy Ritt, Paris, explains that “The Gay Games welcomes all sport and culture participants without regard to their sexual orientation, age or physical abilities. Participants can choose from cultural events, such as band or choral singing, or from 34 sports, including many that are also offered in the Olympics. In the Gay Games, participants of every level come together in the spirit of ‘Participation, Inclusion, and Personal Best™’.”

On August the 5th, a delegation of about 40 athletes, medallists at the Eurogames of Barcelona, were received for the first time by Gianfranco Fini, President of the Italian House of Representatives, and leader of the most right wing party in the
